Seen any good sculptures made from almonds lately? Note: no other nut-based sculptures may be discussed under threat of the ban-hammer!

Don't worry about seeming like a Plumber. I now of at least one room unexplored and now unknown. The plane I got about half drawn some people decided I was trying to use hydraulics in the cold of space. It was a huge electrical trunk line. To the world where the world seems to have gears, too. I will need that one, too. Bob L. Petersen

Hey, my parents want to know what I want for Christmas and I can't really think of anything. The only thing that came to mind is a book called "How to prove it: A Structured Approach" so do you guys have any ideas along those lines. I'm a high school senior and my interests are in Computers, Quantum mechanics, and Artificial intelligence. I was also thinking about asking for a mechanical keyboard so recommendations on that would be great.

Back in the 1990s and 2000s we had space operas like Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly and Babylon 5. Why don't we see space opera shows on TV anymore? Did the network execs decide the genre was dead? Did people lose interest in space travel? Why is this genre dead on TV? If the genre does not appeal to anyone anymore what can be done to revitalize the genre? What can be done to make the genre more relatable? Do you think this genre should be revived? Either way I think we need more epic space battles and political intrigue on TV. It was long thought that fantasy was a genre once thought reserved for geeks but Game of Thrones has garnered a huge audience. Perhaps a…

quick question This paper was free, but they've moved it behind the pay gate. Why might they have done this? Can pedophiles be reached for primary prevention of child sexual abuse? First results of the Berlin Prevention Project Dunkelfeld (PPD) http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/14789940903174188 I've linked to this paper to show that underage preferences are inversely related to adult-oriented preferences, with most of their convenience sample consisting of primary or exclusive-type pedophiles.

When ever my girlfriend or my friends ask me a scientific question, and I ACTUALLY explain the answer they tend to get annoyed and/or distracted. Sometimes they say I "talk just to hear myself talk" or that I "go on and on and on", but I'm just trying to illustrate the actual scientific reason behind the answer, and in return they get frustrated. I imagine I'm not the only person ever to have this problem? ~thoughts? ~EE

http://www.livescience.com/48922-theory-of-relativity-in-real-life.html?google_editors_picks=true I thought this was really interesting. This forum cites GPS frequently as "tangible evidence of Relativity working", but it might be good to have 7 more in the holster here...

Hi, I'm a 4th year phd student and I've found that I have increasingly lost interest in working in science. Things are going relatively well for me, I have a great relationship with my advisor who is happy with me, I have published a couple of papers (just recently even got some coverage in the news) and I have been offered a postdoc position. My personal and family life is also satisfactory, no complaints there. My problem is that I have lost interest in doing scientific research, and so am not sure whether I should continue after my phD. I have seen other people talking about lack of motivation online, but usually they complain about frustration with their pr…

My happiness is the only reason for me finding good meaning about me as a person and finding good meaning in this life. Without that, there would be nothing good about me as a person or anything good in my life. I can just use my thoughts alone to perceive me and my life being good even without my pleasure. But these are nothing more than neutral (neither good or bad) thoughts and that would not make me or my life anything good at all regardless of how much I help others and do great things in my life. Therefore, since I no longer have any pleasure 24/7 due to my anhedonia (emotional numbness) in which there are never any brief moments of pleasure to any degree whatsoever…

When did you first realize how little you truly know? I was ~17, and decided to study special relativity because my high school physics class didn't go over it in any detail. I went through Taylor/Wheeler's "Spacetime Physics" pretty quickly, so I thought it would be pretty easy to learn GR. I bought a copy of Wald's book (not recommended for beginners), glanced through it a bit, and I suddenly realized that I actually knew close to nothing about physics. It's been ~4 years since then, and I'm definitely way more knowledgeable than I was, but I'm still blown away whenever I start thinking about how much is left to be learned. Anyone have any similar experiences wi…

My wife, a special-ed teacher has a student she thinks is dyslexic. She is not trained to teach dyslexics, and thinks this student should be tested for dyslexia. He is a challenge for her, so she asked me if there was some kind of glasses that could straighten out the letters for him. I said no, but a computer program might be made that reads pages with a camera, converts the picture into characters (OCR), and presents him with the words with the characters rearranged to help him. In other words, if he confuses d as b and b as d, then the program would change them to whatever he needs. Such a program would need a training session with each user to learn what each dy…

The NBA 14/15 season is a day away from starting so this thread for any fans and mildly interested posters. I am a LA Lakers fan myself but there are many compelling stories playing out around the league. Beyond seeing how Kobe holds up in his return from an injury plagued season it will be interesting to see: how the Miami Heat perform in the post James era, the return of Derrick Rose to the revamped Bulls, if the Cavs are pretenders or contenders, if Golden State can get over the hump, if Melo can become a true leader, and if Durant can perform to or even above expectations? All thoughts and opinions are welcome.

What is gravity? I may have the answer. I will try to explain using logic and thought experiments. Here goes nothing: Think of language. Let's look at English, as it's the language we are using. I've found three particular sentences that have logic and are true, even when taken out of context. I came about them when I asked, where truth lie or lay? All the observer needs are the Laws of English. But this leads to a problem? A paradox? How can one understand language out of context? A lot of questions so here are the sentences and maybe answers: In the past you will lay and lie. (revealed outcomes, whole of information.) In the PRESENT you will lay OR lie. …

Was wondering if there was anybody on this site who enjoys playing around with a Rubik's Cube? I myself have the Rubik's Cube, the Mini Cube, Rubik's Revenge, the Professor's Cube, and the Megaminx, and am able to solve all of them fairly quickly (I may post a video on Youtube on how to solve the regular Rubik's Cube and the Megaminx sometime in the future). I'm also looking into attempting the Teraminx, as it seems like it will be a good challenge. I'm also looking into making a go at this crazy thing too: http://www.superliminal.com/cube/cube.htm

Hey everyone, I wanted to get some opinions from others on filtered water. Whenever I change my Brita water filter, the water always seems like it goes down smoother and has almost a crispness to it. Of course, I know this could be in part to the fact that my mind knows I have just changed the filter, and could be imagined only. I am curious to know whether or not there is anything behind this and if anyone else shares the same feeling or perception. I do have a ppm meter that use and always replace the filter when it is half of the starting amount. I also will admit that I use my filter longer than is recommended because a) I am a single individual and I …

The wholesale price of electricity in the UK at the moment is about 5p/kWh according to:- www.businesselectricityprices.org.uk/cost-per-kwh (RE:- " Over the past few years these have stabilised to between 4p and 5p per kWh. ") and the wholesale price of Kerosene (@ $1.62 to the £) is about £458/mt (45.8p/kg) according to:- www.thisdaylive.com/articles/falling-oil-price-as-window-for-subsidy-removal/192441 (RE:- " For Kerosene, the actual cost in a foreign refinery recently was $743 per metric tonne "). { I'm using 46.2MJ/kg as the heat of combustion for Kerosene according to:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerosene and 1kWh=3.6MJ } which leads to 3.6p/kWh ( 4…

Many people seek to find solutions to problems by searching for patterns as well finding associations between disparate things. I would like to show very interesting relationships between nature, language, human anatomy and geometry. I believe that these relationships between things can be described as expressing a recursive principle and thus if applied further could represent an algorithm that could explain everything. This post is accompanied by an image. I would like to ask what those visiting this thread think the geometry looks like. I will begin this topic with this image and will post many more strange geometries as found in nature. The reason for doing so is to…

Post your favorite stuff from viXra (or similar). I like this one, where the author solves two Millennium Prize problems in just five pages. I'm also a fan of this one, where the Goldbach conjecture is proven by induction in just two pages. (For those of you unaware, viXra is a pre-print archive similar to arXiv, except they have zero restrictions on who can post what. Whereas arXiv requires affiliation with a university or an endorsement from an established user of the site, and will reject obviously wrong papers (which is pretty much a bare minimum standard), with viXra everyone has free-reign! The results of this policy are entertaining, to say the least.)
