Seen any good sculptures made from almonds lately? Note: no other nut-based sculptures may be discussed under threat of the ban-hammer!

I know there are some photographers here and was wondering if you could give me some ideas on a good SLR or SLR like camera to start off with that isn't extremely expensive. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16830120070 << this looked good to me but I don't know anything.

OK! I'm here again to get such Ideas from the Geeks? Geneius guys like you all here!. I just want a good catch phrase about science and technology. It's fine by just only in one sentence needed to deliver a good Idea about what is on about Science and technology, trust me I just needed a good one not too great or teriffic and just need something for a highschool level teachings. Example: 1) Science and technology is for the betterment and a must to our world. 2) Science and technology makes life better and easier. ^ something like that? but that one is too common or easy and plain stupid a Gradeschool level definition of science. Ahem! sorry for this I …

A colleague of mine who just published a book is giving a public lecture and book signing tomorrow and I want to be supportive and attend. I also wrote up a few questions drawing from his book so I can help him out in that manner. But as I was looking over the book I noticed that he's addressed "Mr." on the flap and back cover, even though he has a J.D. degree. I've called him "doctor" before in person, but now I'm uncertain -- was I in error? I don't want to embarass him at the event, but I don't want to ask him either, especially since he's long since invited me to call him by his first name. It would just be too wierd to ask. What do you all think? Help me …

...is really pretty cool. If you don't know what it is last.fm is a personalised Internet radio station that takes your likes and dislikes and makes recommendations based on that. You can look at other peoples profiles and get an idea of what they are listening to and share and expand your musical taste in a nice legal way. Anyone else here use last.fm? Should there maybe be an SFN group?

I was thinking about it the other day. Does evolution and natural selection mean that one day my descendents will be eating and preying on each other? That's just weird.

Well, I was reading a series of short stories written by someone, and I was talking to her about them. They were really good, and I suggested possibly turning them into a film, but the stories would need some special effects to make it to the big screen. However, neither of us have the money to do such a thing, nor the programs to start, though we have places to do so. Then we went into a discussion about local independent filmmakers, and how we might get one of them to help us. However, we know nobody. We'll keep searching, but in the mean time, what do you guys think about independent filmmakers? None of the major company types, but ones that you can only see in your to…

Dear members of this Forum, Some time ago I discovered the so called 'Forbidden Letters' to Philip Gardiner. They deal with alchemy. If one studies the Letters, one learns that alchemy was not about changing he chemical lead (Pb) into the chemical gold (Au), but that it is all about the 'lead' and 'gold' of our soul. The Letters are a fast and quite cryptic (especially Letters 1-2) exchange of esoteric knowledge. But let this not discourage you. http://www.world-mysteries.com/PhilipGardiner/ Alchemy seems to work as follows: our body has to be consumed and recomposed in a fire India calls Kundalini, and modern alchemists call sub-atomic. [Phoenix-metaphor…

(I didn't want to derail a good thread in the Cosmology area so I thought one here would be more appropriate.) Just something that struck me as interesting. In this thread on the Fermi Paradox Sceptic Lance says To which I can only add "Especially since anyone who thinks they may have found evidence of such a visit is obviously a fool or fraud and should not be listened to". On the one hand is the complaint about the lack of evidence for a visit, yet on the other is the automatic assumption that those who think visits have been or are occurring are crackpots. (And most of them are.) I find this dichotomy interesting. Please note, I'm not talking about the …

This thread is just to share those possibly rare moments or hours, where all the responsibilites of the day are put aside (works over, kids are asleep et.c), and you get to do exactly what you want. For me, getting back from work sitting in the back garden with a huge cup of tea, and just pondering and enjoying the sun (although that's been sadly lacking recently...the sun that is) More recently, (after avoiding playing it for the last two years) I like to get up at the crack of dawn on Sunday, and emmerse myself in WOW for several hours, or late at night with a bottle of wine. SFN chat, if I'm in on a Friday, is always good fun. So what do you get up t…

Who do you think would kick ass if there was a battle between various science fiction universes? The six choices are Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Asimov's Foundation Universe, Gundam's, or Babylon 5? Personally, I would say that Star Wars would win because, though their weapons are a bit clumsy, they are varied and pack a lot of power. Also, they do have speed and good defensive capability.

Free Will A. Free Will B. No Free Will C. Uncertain of Free Will This is somewhat targeted at Strong Atheists (believe in no Greater Power), but they are a tough bunch, so I think they can handle it. Basically I am asking if there is a "Master" (read God) of your brain, or is that part of the Universe just reacting like clockwork (hidden variables included), or perhaps "quantum uncertainly", but still with no Free Will. Personally, I believe I have Free Will, but cannot prove it even to myself.

I thought I would share this with everyone hear, I'm sure some of you may have heard about the recent progress of the Iraqi football team(or soccer, for the benefit of Americans). They recently trounced Australia, one of the favourites in their opening game(I think it was their opening game, the tournament's only just begun) of the Asia cup. I must say reading about the result made me feel elated. All the things this country, its people, and its team to have been through, it does bring water to my eyes thinking and reading about it. Football, I think, can make a real difference in these kinds of times, and could be a real source of unity and hope for the country if they s…

Can anybody else get into Wikipedia? I've been trying for two days. Just getting an error page. You know. "The page cannot be displayed. Blah blah blah." I thought I'd drop into an internet forum and ask if anybody else was having this problem. Maybe its a localised stuff up. Can't locate any news regarding a global collapse of wiki. Have tried everything but keep on getting nothing. No matter what page links I try. http://www.wikipedia.org I'm using a library computer and none of the other machines are cooperating either. Might go and try the internet cafe down the street later.

So I've done something incredibly stupid. I picked up this stray dog about a day and a half ago, and have been trying to find it a home ever since. Ten minutes ago, I noticed it has fleas I read some stuff about fleas on wikipedia and I'm totally freaking out. It says they lay eggs and get everywhere. How can I sanitize myself, my apartment, and the dog inexpensively? I dont have the money to buy it a collar right now but I just need to know how to clean it all up. Any help is appreciated.
