So, i've had this idea of a live debate between members of this forum. not on the forum or IRC but on skype or teamspeak. seeing as we haven't had many decent debates in a long while. the debate would have to have a science angle at the very least(purely scientific would be prefferable) and should try to avoid political debate as much as possible(a debate about some governments policies on science would be boring as hell to people not from that country). we'd have to appoint a moderator and a panel of judges to decide on the victor. the debate would be open for everyone to listen in on(and ask questions if we have a section allowing questions from the floor).…

Alight i have been wanting to start one of these for a long time:-) For all of you that are not familar with The Good The Bad and The Ugly... heres how it goes, first some one posts a good such as "My son just got into college." the the next person does a bad "He had an affair with his english teacher." and then the next person does an ugly like "So did I." and it repeats over and over and over until a moderater finds a reason to close the thread. So let the threading BEGIN. Good: I just got a new laptop.

  10. Specifically in the areas of: Medicine, Biology, Biochem, Organic Chem, Physics, and Astrophysics? I know there are several universities that post their journals and what not. (I already know about MIT's online courses.) Could you provide me with some links? I'm mostly interested in Peer-reviewed material for research papers and out of interest. Thanks

Found this and thought it may be of interest to some of us here: http://www.hellofromearth.net/ I would have posted in "Astronomy and Cosmology" but I figured this is really more pop culture with a astro-sci twist than anything pertinent to the discussions there. Would "Congratulations on banging the rocks together, guys" be appropriate? Anyone who needed that tip would miss it.

Fun idea. They basically project the game onto a big board, on which are attached some accelerometers, which they use triangulate the point of impact using LabVIEW. Funny bit at the end. WNZCS-coZjY

Hello everyone, so i been working on how i can self-improve in my learning. Sometimes i find my self having a hard time solving a problem that some people can solve very easily. So i ask how can i improve my self, i train a lot at the gym to have a healty body, as well for the fun of it, but yeah a healty body gives the brain some more action, figure of speech. I eat right, i get a good sleep, i am googeling, trying to research some good techniques, i am kinda lost on some search words, so if you could help me out, & if you know any extra information on the subject. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance, Codefreak.

I guess this will be the official post your class schedule thread. This only applies to people who are currently in school; high school, college, grad school, etc. Alternatively, if you are a professor or teacher, you can post which classes you are teaching. Anyways, here is mine for this coming semester (In my school, most classes are term based): A-Term: PH2201 Intermediate Mechanics I MA4451 Boundary Value Problems CS1101 Intro to Program and Design B-Term: PH2202 Intermediate Mechanics II PH3401 Quantum Mechanics I CS2102 Object-Orientated Design For next semester (assuming I don't change my mind between now and later): C-Term: PH3402 …

hey folks, i've started writing this story (granted, its quite likely that i won't get round to finishing it because i'm like that but hey) and basically there's a character who is stuck in the wilderness with not much on him and a cut on his little 'pinky' finger gets infected and he has to cut it off. i've been thinking about different ways that he could cut it off and i remembered that farmers use rubber bands to cut lambs tails off and i thought maybe he could have a rubber band in his pocket or something. i was just wondering how long it would take for a little finger to drop off if the rubber band was tight enough and if it would be painful and what kind of wound…

This was a rather interesting article, especially in the light of the recent flurry of activity involving "skeptics" in certain other threads on these boards: http://www.nolanchart.com/article6621.html The article continues beyond that but I found the lead captures the issue quite elegantly in a nutshell. I have seen many people self-apply the label "skeptic" when expressing doubt about the mainstream scientific opinion on climate change. However, there seems to be a common prevailing attitude among many of these people: they seem to have started with the assumption that there is something fundamentally wrong with the way climate science research is bein…

An article appeared on BBC News this morning highlighting a report which argues that so-called prestigious professions such as law and medicine are still largely reserved for people from wealthy backgrounds. I've read a lot of articles similar to this one. But what has struck me is that being a scientist is not ever mentioned as a prestigious profession alongside law and medicine. Do you think that science ought to be regarded as a prestigious field, alongside the more common ones? (I know that this is more problematic than law for example, as "science" is more open-ended as to what your career actually is). But should being a scientist be as well respected as be…

Cocamidopropyl betaine is a synthetic surfactant derived from coconut oil and dimethylaminopropylamine. It is a zwitterionic chemical compound with a quaternary ammonium cation. It is a viscous pale yellow transparent liquid and is used as a surfactant in bath products such as shampoos and hand soaps, and in cosmetics as an emulsifying agent and thickener, and to reduce irritation purely ionic surfactants would cause. It also serves as an antistatic agent in hair conditioners. Cocamidopropyl betaine is a derivate of cocamide and glycine betaine (a form of betaine). See cocamide for the discussion of the length of carbon chain in the molecule. Cocamidopropyl betain…

Hello all. I am going to be working on Nevada in six weeks (I Currently work in the UK) I just have a quick and slightly dumb question for any Americans out there. What is/are the video conections on a standard American DVD player? e.g. European DVD players usually have a SCART connector (An all round A/V 1/0 analogue interface) and a analogue video-out which is either a Phono connection or a PAL connection. Do you guys over the other side of the pond use Phono and/or BNC connections? Thanks p.s I've Wiki links some of the terms used in this post so as you know what i'm on about.
