Alright, so, for about three weeks, this girl keeps looking at me. Let's call her "asian chick that's not bad looking and probably in her early 20s." At first I was thinking that maybe she has some staring problem, but today... she made a deliberate look. You know, the person turns their head enough that any person would have endured a little bit of strain trying to do a neck turn like that and if only to gain a second's glance at the other person being looked at. Personally, I've got wayyy too much B.S. in my life at the moment. Not toooo much. I mean, I've learned how to deal with having a relationship and managing my time. But I don't have a lot of time except a fe…

Had a nuclear stress test done Monday. Never had one before and was a bit leary. Always running on that crazy treadmill. Got some bum knees now and they retired me from the mill. Anyway, I was injected with a radio isotope. Something called, Tc99m Sestamlib. The lady tech called it Technisium, or something like that. Asked her how long I was going to be radioactive and she told me about six hours. I got to looking at a tag she said I should carry with me for the next week. Shit, I'm in bed that night looking to see if I was glowing in the dark. No! I didn't glow, but I was uncomfortable, feeling like a damn cyborg or something. Went on the internet trying get some info on…

Actually I was working on my summer job at the time, but apparently the cat disapproves. Now you know the sort of hardships I go through when trying to fix your bugs.

Here at work we have 2 urinals and 3 stalls, for more serious business. When I have to use one of these stalls, I always choose an outside stall, fully expecting the next potential toilet client to choose the other outside stall - leaving the middle stall for emergency use only. But we have a class of employee here that's just way too damn socially comfortable and will choose the middle stall, even when one of the outside stalls are EMPTY! Why? Why oh why do you do this?!?! Here I am, minding my own business and some a-hole would rather sit close to a half naked man dropping bunker busters in an industrial ceramic bowl, than to sit a few more feet away and cr…

Just a quick note for future reference: I've renamed General Discussion to The Lounge to reflect its goal on SFN. We'd like The Lounge to be a place for informal chat about your life, your job, and so on, and not just a dumping ground for threads that don't fit elsewhere. So enjoy the new Lounge, and be sure to put the Cheese Nips back in the pantry when you're done.

If we all concentrate on something at the same time, it will happen! E=MC2, so, with enough energy, matter can be created or changed. Reply with what you would like people to concentrate on and when. Bring Jesus back at 7:00 PM Central Standard Time on Wednesday, June 9, 2010. Can breathing purified oxygen make us live forever? Wikipedia says that oxygen is the number one source of cell metabolism. It also says that when oxygen was discovered as a purer air, it made mice live longer. Breathing pure oxygen gives us much more energy and since we are using some of that energy to regenerate all the time, anyway, then, wouldn't more energy make u…

So i was watching Hans Rosling on global population growth hosted by TED, and he was talking about how poverty induces people to procreate more. It seemed to me that the stimuli of poverty caused an internal mechanism of self-preservation to enable itself. Then the enabling of the self-preservation mechanism was manifested by having more children. One could claim many other factors regarding the manifestation, some being that more children meant more manual labor and the cost/benefit ratio between work/food is slightly greater with more children. I think that these claims are rather the effect of the self-preservation mechanism. If we were to see this type of behavi…

Kepler gave us formulas for calculating distances and speeds of our solar system. Yet, while each planet is unique in its size, density and orbit, how have they maintained this lock step for billions of years? Maybe someone can help?

I have a Kindle, and I'm quite fond of it. I get The Times every morning, have a collection of a few dozen books, and I use the built-in Wikipedia access often. Reading the news from a detailed news source has been refreshing; The Times has good global coverage and investigative journalism that I enjoy. However, journalism is at a bit of a sticky point. The Times has recently made their website registration-only, and will soon be demanding a fee for access. Print subscriptions are down, and they maintain that without charging a fee, they won't be able to pay their wages. On the other hand, the New York Times tried a paywall a few years ago, and found that being fr…

After reading Carl Sagan's essay "Why We Need To Understand Science" I realized at some point in my educational career, I decided my questions became dumb. I have no idea why, but at some point it seemed unacceptable for me to ask a fundamental question like "Why is the sun yellow?" I'm eighteen and I'm not sure why the sun is yellow. I know about different stars and that the sun uses fusion power but I can't explain the color. Am I the only one who still has questions like this in their head but won't ask them? How about we ask each other these questions? Any field, any topic, and no pressure to stop you from asking and getting your answer. Maybe just maybe, we…

Hi. In simple and superficial terms, those huge cost$ from Afghanistan and Irak operations, where does the money ends ? Is all the salaries of military personnel ending in USA citizens pockets? The war machinery aircraft, battleships, war tanks, trucks... made in USA, ends in USA contractors, factories, workers pockets ? Weaponry, ammunition, made in USA, ends in USA factories profits ? I do not think they are imported from China... yet. The suply chain for food, equipment, transportation, construction of facilities, varied services for the armed forces, ends in USA nationals commercial operators ? With the exception of fuel to run machinery overseas, and perhaps …

So I recently finished reading 1984 by George Orwell. Very interesting book, and slightly scary too. Anyhow, it occurred to me that his idea of thoughtcrime isn't new (which of course is part of the scary aspect -- that the stuff in the book might possibly happen). Jesus is the earliest person I know of to have considered thoughts to be crime (a sin is a crime against God). I doubt he was the first though. Anyhow, for those who read the book, what's the most Orwellian society you know of (present or historical)? What about the first instance of various of the components of the book (thoughtcrime, doublethink, Thought Police, Newspeak,..)?

hello folks, i have just graduated as a mature student with a Graphic Design degree and one particular area of study which i am interested in is the communication of science/scientific concepts to the public. although my main interests lie within music and graphics i have always had a fascination with science and philosophy. The only problem being i really don't have a very technical brain! However, i am constantly astounded by what i read about cosmology and science. Even though i don't really understand the fundamental workings surrounding theories and laws, they never fail to trigger profound thoughts and spark my imagination. my own scientific knowledge is…

I understand that in science you try to find answers that make sense to questions about the world around us. So far science has answered almost every question except those classified as "Supernatural." how will we ever advance further in science if we aren't willing and open to test new ideas? It never used to be like that before, once we found explainations that made sense it's as if scientists suddenly just stopped trying to test out of the ordinary ideas. Maybe if we tested it more we could try to make sense of these sort of things instead of always wanting to find out for the rest of our lives. But of course it will be hard to do that no doubt because it's hard to obt…

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac: Can we ever trust these two big real estate lenders again? I notice where more and more ads coming from these two giants, allude to the fact that everyone made sacrifices in these past several months of hard times. My question is, how can such a pair of fungi who almost, between the two of them; literally destroy this country. And now to crawl indiscrimitatly from under the rock where they have been so sucessfully hiding, to demand that trust again?
