I have a Kindle, and I'm quite fond of it. I get The Times every morning, have a collection of a few dozen books, and I use the built-in Wikipedia access often. Reading the news from a detailed news source has been refreshing; The Times has good global coverage and investigative journalism that I enjoy. However, journalism is at a bit of a sticky point. The Times has recently made their website registration-only, and will soon be demanding a fee for access. Print subscriptions are down, and they maintain that without charging a fee, they won't be able to pay their wages. On the other hand, the New York Times tried a paywall a few years ago, and found that being fr…

After reading Carl Sagan's essay "Why We Need To Understand Science" I realized at some point in my educational career, I decided my questions became dumb. I have no idea why, but at some point it seemed unacceptable for me to ask a fundamental question like "Why is the sun yellow?" I'm eighteen and I'm not sure why the sun is yellow. I know about different stars and that the sun uses fusion power but I can't explain the color. Am I the only one who still has questions like this in their head but won't ask them? How about we ask each other these questions? Any field, any topic, and no pressure to stop you from asking and getting your answer. Maybe just maybe, we…

Hi. In simple and superficial terms, those huge cost$ from Afghanistan and Irak operations, where does the money ends ? Is all the salaries of military personnel ending in USA citizens pockets? The war machinery aircraft, battleships, war tanks, trucks... made in USA, ends in USA contractors, factories, workers pockets ? Weaponry, ammunition, made in USA, ends in USA factories profits ? I do not think they are imported from China... yet. The suply chain for food, equipment, transportation, construction of facilities, varied services for the armed forces, ends in USA nationals commercial operators ? With the exception of fuel to run machinery overseas, and perhaps …

So I recently finished reading 1984 by George Orwell. Very interesting book, and slightly scary too. Anyhow, it occurred to me that his idea of thoughtcrime isn't new (which of course is part of the scary aspect -- that the stuff in the book might possibly happen). Jesus is the earliest person I know of to have considered thoughts to be crime (a sin is a crime against God). I doubt he was the first though. Anyhow, for those who read the book, what's the most Orwellian society you know of (present or historical)? What about the first instance of various of the components of the book (thoughtcrime, doublethink, Thought Police, Newspeak,..)?

hello folks, i have just graduated as a mature student with a Graphic Design degree and one particular area of study which i am interested in is the communication of science/scientific concepts to the public. although my main interests lie within music and graphics i have always had a fascination with science and philosophy. The only problem being i really don't have a very technical brain! However, i am constantly astounded by what i read about cosmology and science. Even though i don't really understand the fundamental workings surrounding theories and laws, they never fail to trigger profound thoughts and spark my imagination. my own scientific knowledge is…

I understand that in science you try to find answers that make sense to questions about the world around us. So far science has answered almost every question except those classified as "Supernatural." how will we ever advance further in science if we aren't willing and open to test new ideas? It never used to be like that before, once we found explainations that made sense it's as if scientists suddenly just stopped trying to test out of the ordinary ideas. Maybe if we tested it more we could try to make sense of these sort of things instead of always wanting to find out for the rest of our lives. But of course it will be hard to do that no doubt because it's hard to obt…

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac: Can we ever trust these two big real estate lenders again? I notice where more and more ads coming from these two giants, allude to the fact that everyone made sacrifices in these past several months of hard times. My question is, how can such a pair of fungi who almost, between the two of them; literally destroy this country. And now to crawl indiscrimitatly from under the rock where they have been so sucessfully hiding, to demand that trust again?

I have just sent off a paper for possible publication. The journal was recommended to me by someone familiar with my work. I know they publish work on similar topics. Anyway, I may give details if the paper gets accepted. I wanted to know what are other peoples experiences of submission to journals? Let us hear both the good and the bad. Thanks in advance.

This is (hopefully) going to become quite a large debate and I will be mentioning many different groups of people in it. I would like to say however that I am not intending to insult or poke fun at ANY of the groups I will mention, nor am I trying to start a massive argument. I love nothing more than to debate things calmly and intellectually with other people. I have many questions and confusions about all of these different groups and the reason for this thread is to hopefully see if people can explain what causes some of the many things I will be listing. Also let me say I am an Agnostic and an absolute adorer of all things Science. Now lets begin. Religion …

I was watching an interesting documentary on the History Channel last night having to do with the year 2012, and possibly; "The End of Time". Having glanced at several articles over the past few months I saw nothing to peak my interest until hearing and seeing that it might be the end of our world as we know it. Well, you know how that goes?? Seems that some of these Myans, supposedly their astronomers and such, sailed out into the middle of the Pacific Ocean hundreds of years ago and thousands of miles from home just to carve a statue out of a rocky formation on the mountain side of a small island. How they found such an island is just as much a mystery? The statue is …

No offesnse intended; however, when someone has an idea that disagrees with science, it's not wrong, it's wrong according to science. So that person shouldn't be treated as dumb/uneducated, because our guess, experiementing on our lifes, equates to different results. I believe personally, that the earth is an unborn star; and I guess that most scientists will dismiss that. How did I come to that conclusion? Well here's my evidence: Elements Resources Gold isn't a resource, I don't see any application; apart from human made application, that gold has on the world. Exactly the same with diamonds or other resources that are said to have worth. Oil is a resou…

Nur kun has solved one of the most important delima of how we came to this world with his theory of One kun (thought) theory, which states how the world came to be and how we got here. Here is an small passage from "Universe created by a single thought" chapter: "Our All-powerful, forever compassionate creator created us like itself 100% with no exception (Please see chapter “Why an everlasting, All-powerful creator created us exactly like itself in eternity”). However, since we did not create ourselves, we had a thought -- what if nothing was the same and completely opposite to what forever was, and how would it be like to be not like our creator? And with this sin…

Getting close to the 4th of July now, and I know the mere mention of such a holiday will likely wrankle a few very sensative noses. So, while not trying to be political, I believe Mo says it best when he made this song. His name; Mo Bandy, a decent singer and entertaining, and If you're hankerin' for some good, honest country; just Listen!

This is an elephant. The male of this species is called a bull; the female, a cow This is a whale. It's male is also called a bull and its female is a cow So what animal is this? its male is a bull; its female a cow (Female pictured) but what do we refer to this animal as? It could be called a Dometic ungulate, but this colloquial term also include horses and other hoved animals. The only other options would be to give it its Latin name 'Bos primigenius' but this is a bit of a mouth-full. Or we could give it it's specific breed name 'Freisian' But this can get complicated as you'd have to know all the different breeds. Moreover, the other two m…
