Speculations Forum Rules

The Speculations forum is provided for those who like to hypothesize new ideas in science. To enrich our discussions above the level of Wild Ass Guesswork (WAG) and give as much meaning as possible to such speculations, we do have some special rules to follow:

  1. Speculations must be backed up by evidence or some sort of proof. If your speculation is untestable, or you don't give us evidence (or a prediction that is testable), your thread will be moved to the Trash Can. If you expect any scientific input, you need to provide a case that science can measure.
  2. Be civil. As wrong as someone might be, there is no reason to insult them, and there's no reason to get angry if someone points out the flaws in your theory, either.
  3. Keep it in the Speculations forum. Don't try to use your pet theory to answer questions in the mainstream science forums, and don't hijack other threads to advertise your new theory.

The movement of a thread into (or out of) Speculations is ultimately at the discretion of moderators, and will be determined on a case by case basis.

A report on: http://www.rsc.org/Publishing/ChemScience/Volume/2010/11/Extended_elements.asp contains the following statement: “Now Pekka Pyykkö1 at the University of Helsinki has used a highly accurate computational model to predict electronic structures and therefore the periodic table positions of elements up to proton number 172 - far beyond the limit of elements that scientists can currently synthesise”. 1A suggested periodic table up to Z 172, based on Dirac–Fock calculations on atoms and ions Pekka Pyykkö, Phys. 5. Please ponder the process of simple Cell Division, in simple single-celled organisms. Presumably, the single cell starts with some mass (m), "eats" biologically important molecules, "fattening up" on those "parts", until it masses about twice its original mass (m --> 2m). Then, it uses those "parts" to duplicate all of its cellular systems, and divides, into two daughter cells, each of approximately the original mass (2m --> m+m). QUESTION: Imagine being able to track all of the individual atoms, inside the single cell. Imagine being able to 'tag' those atoms, labeling them as "original" or as part of the "parts" supply. Then, when the cell uses the "parts" …

Not sure how to describe the question but i'll do my best. If numbers are infinite, how can you ever get to 1 is basically what im asking. So in the form of time, how do you ever get to a second? where in the .00000000000000000000000000000 and beyond does it actually begin and start going up?

It seems a good time for me to clarify a bit about myself and what I’m up to. I’m 61 years old and have a background in the philosophy of science and human ecology (having published books in both areas), as well as in general philosophy (where I recently completed a 40-year book project). Having said what I have to say in these fields, not too long ago I moved on to another field that has always interested me, and in which I had done some work previously, namely the foundations of physics. My interest in the foundations of physics consists in looking at the subject as a whole, first to understand it, and then, perhaps, to try to improve it. So this means studyin…

Hi General and special relativity have some problem with some infinit solution. I was thinking (I am prety sure some else thaught of that) why not use some mathematic that admit infinity as a solution ? I am specialy thinking of projective geometry. Maybe by admitting infinit solution we are not stuck there, and can go further in our understanding of black hole. Can we extend Lorentz transform to work at c ?

  10. So I thought up an idea for a universe, that would have an infinite universe, at exactly the critical density (on average), but with some slight fluctuations resulting in inhomogeneity. Also, equal parts matter and antimatter at the start, with high density. So my idea is that the parts of this universe with equal parts matter and antimatter will annihilate and tend to cause expansion, whereas the parts where there is some slight separation of matter and antimatter won't expand so much. The part in between would expand since it would have both matter and antimatter, resulting in total isolation of the matter from its antimatter. The end result would be an infinite num…

Question: I request all of you to read the following article and answer the portion which is marked in blue colour; The point is scientists say that the electron is revolving in the orbit and the energy required for such revolution is very very small. They are also say that electron is not loosing enery and the energy is not supplied from out side. In such case for the revolution of the electron the new energy is supplied which is against the rule, neither energy can be created or destoryed. Please read the following article and answer this. Shankara gave two phases in his philosophy— 1. Phase of Reality (Paramarthadasa):- In this phase the absolute r…

I'm a college student at Georgia Southern University. For the fall semester, we were to choose a pseudoscience, in my case ESP, and as our last project, publish our findings in real life. This is what I've found: Robert Anderson Georgia Southern University Make Your Own Decision Extrasensory Perception is a very touchy subject among intellectuals, mainly because there isn’t very much evidence for it. However, I believe the problem comes from reluctance in intellectuals to test it. Rupert Sheldrake has tested ESP with positive results, but is usually not accredited with it because his information is somewhat sketchy. However, I’m not writing to back or dispr…

This may be a question for the philosophy section, but i do not have the privilege to post there so it seems to be best placed here. Does trying to understand infinite space ever bother you, especially as physicists, for instance if you take a box, it has an inside and an outside, everything seems to have boundaries but apparently the matter and energy in the universe is expanding into....nothing?, like we exist inside a space without a boundary I get the same mind boggling confusion if i try to comprehend cause and effect, something has to trigger an event, (take the big bang for instance) but some action has to cause the trigger and so on, chicken and the egg et…

NASA's overall results have remained the same noting that every CMB point is unchanging; the composite study is like a unique fingerprint. As a result of this work, each point on the CMB sphere can be catalogued; characteristics and coordinates noted. With this information in hand one may use these points in locating earth vis-à-vis the technique of triangulation. Expanded treatment of this study is available at my web site: http://www.allnewuni…

Does gravity negate the 2nd Law? I remember that when we did our heat engine problems that the entropy of the system only went down when we took energy out. Gravity is negative energy, right? Wouldn't that effect large scale entropy and thus the 2nd Law's application to the universe as a whole?

20 reasons which show evolution is not science Most of the quotes are taken from evolutionists own words found in there own books and articles. 1. Evolution has never been observed Evolution has never been observed and leading evolutionists have even admitted evolution cannot be witnessed in the lifetime of an observer. The lack of a case for evolution is therefore most clearly recognized by the fact that no one has ever seen it happen. Richard Dawkins: ‘‘Evolution... hasn't been observed while it's happening.’’ G. Ledyard Stebbins: ‘‘… the major steps of evolution have never been observed.’’ 2. Evolution relies upon non-observable time periods…

David Wilcock has some good youtube presentations on space and time ECT he believes their were people on mars some time ago who were like a big influence on life on earth, not saying he is right in any way just that he has his shit together so to speak. He says something is going to happen in 2012 that will change life on earth forever, guy is worth watching.

I think this is the correct place to post this... I had an idea... Although it could be someone elses and I didn't know or forgot... Perhaps gravity [and perhaps other forces] act on space-time. This would cause the space-time to 'crumple' around high gravity objects which would mean time gets progressively slower the closer you are to those high gravity objects. [so space-time has 'higher density' near things with gravity.] The slower time is because more time has to pass. Now there are two more 'side ideas': 1. Gravity [and other forces] may be free from the effects of time. This would mean as an object passing a high(er) gravity object would move slower because…

Hi Instead of dark energy [2] driving matter [5] outward in an unknown way, it is more convenient to state that is pulled by / accellerated by distant matter. [6][7][8] This distant matter could be pushed off as a dust shell in the first hot phase of the big bang expansion proces. This distant matter is than forcing the universal cooled dark matter to move and to expand. The distant matter could behave like the Oort belt [10] It could be that this distant matter was not superheated because of the one sided pressure, so this matter could be also mostly dark and in its ancient pre- big bang form. The observed universe expansion is than accellerated b…

Trying to grasp a single meaning from the many scientific experiments today leaves me at a total loss. Look at the link below and tell me, is it for real? I personally hope so! Scientifically, hypotheticals abound in many sciences and most are considered gospel. If not scientific, they means nothing. Look and this and think of it as a possible road to discovery. The heading as presented, I'll wait for an honest and civil question?

Error in Rigour by Amitakh Stanford 4th September 2010 Science has been elevated as the sole authority to explain the workings of the world and to decide what should and should not be taken seriously. Science determines what should be believed, what is superstitious, and what is nonsense. In a sense, science has become the self-proclaimed judge of everything. From this vaunted position, science has imposed its will on everything, and spread its tentacles into politics, religion, education, culture, medicine, law, and practically every other field. Under the “rule of science”, anything that is supernatural or metaphysical is often scoffed at …

Hi all. This is kind of a shameless request for ideas. I'm writing a science fiction novel, part of a series in fact. The basic premise is that each star sends out a coded gene sequence in an eleven year cycle that, when created in a lab forms a sort of dark substance that then encircles the star in a dyson sphere. This substance allows for the transmission of radiation output in a narrow focus to other stars. ie, the stars are brains that act as neurons on a galactic scale and humans are the cells that create the neural links between these giant stars. This is why there is apparently so much matter missing from galaxies. The stars are obscured by dyson spheres, and the d…
