Philosophy and Religion Rules

Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.

Philosophy/religion forum rules:

  1. Never make it personal.
    1. Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
    2. Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
  2. Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
  3. Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.

Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.

These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

What I would like to do is treat religion as a behavior, and look at this behavior in the context of evolution, to see if this new behavior brought selective advantage. Instead of treating religion as pro or con, I am treating religion as a new human behavior that suddenly appears. Here is the scenario; it is 10,000 years ago or so and humans are an extension of the apes and evolution, things moving slowly forward. Suddenly a new behavior appears in some of the pre-humans. Did this bring these humans a selective advantage? One way to answer this is to compare the two states of mind. The one with the religion or god effect will begin to see some version of divin…

Hello, I'm going to prove God exists and in the process disprove science. Whether you believe this is up to you, I don't wish to place my beliefs on anyone. Existence is composed of opposites existing between opposites - everything in existence follows these rules. A singularity does exist however, and it comes in the form of a black hole - this is what makes everything 'tick' so to speak. An example can be achieved through numbers; where 0 = opposite/duality and 1 = singularity. Although 1/singularity cannot exist on its own, it can exist between opposites, as the black hole proves so well. 0 = Opposite 000 010 = Opposite 000 The God in the bib…

I'm probably one of the most devout agnostics you'll ever run across. But even I wonder at times, did I stump my toe? Do I honestly understand what's going on around us? Am I really so smart as not to acknowledge there may be a GOD? Take a look at this short video and ask yourself, is evolution all that there is? http://www.tangle.com/view_video.php?viewkey=bb31a5d87b3b44397869&sp=1

Hey, 1) Recently I've been doing a lot of research on Religion and previous civilizations - during my efforts I noticed reoccurences in the pyramid symbol. I was wondering if anyone here could help me decipher what religion the Egyptions followed. My first guess was 'Jewish'; this is purerly arbitrary as the pyramids came up whilst I was decoding what I believe the bible to represent. 2) Seeing as the religious books were written years ago, way before the advanced diction we have today, could we have misinterpreted the word 'God'? The definition of 'God' today is: the supernatural being conceived as the perfect and omnipotent and omniscient originator and ruler of…

Is given by Champollion-Figeac On another thread Klaplunk asked Ju gf) I've studied that question for many years - my interest stemming from initial studies of the Ancient Egyptian Pyramid Texts, where we'll find some of the answers. We'll find other parts in the Book…

Did Jesus teach faith only salvation(like Paul), or did He teach that works are necessary? I tend to think the latter, despite much opposition by most Christian sects. In my defense, it's one of the major themes of Matthew. "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till ALL be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach [them], the same shall be called gre…

Is it necessary to believe in a Creator other than that which we find in our minds? At night, have you ever stood on a mountain, walked along a river or lain in bed and felt absolute contentment while looking out into a creation no one can explain? Then, have you not wondered? This is GOD in his infinitesimal(ism). Many well intended people will try bending your mind to their way of addressing this supreme power; but you are the only one who can make that decision. GOD is real, it's just a matter of pacifying your mind in dealing with such an enigma.

Here's a link to the various translations of Exodus 21:22 Exodus 21:22-25 22 "If men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely [a] but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman's husband demands and the court allows. 23 But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise. [a]: Exodus 21:22 Or she has a miscarriage It's not entirely clear whether this passage is talking about the woman or the child being seriously injured. Is it saying that if someone accidentally kills a…

I was thinking about this the other day, what attributes can we ascribe to any religion and their "good works" that have quite honestly improved the world, in addition to the problems they have caused (as all have, as all human organizations of any age have) to their leaders or founders as philosophers, versus their leaders or founders as prophets and gods? From my vantage point, that is anything but unbiased (I should get that out of the way) it strikes me that all the great things about Jesus or Buddha Mohammad or whomever exist as a result of their efforts as philosophers or, just generally leaders. The negative aspects associated with any of today's religions tha…

This is probably the first question that runs through my mind when talking about God(ignosticism ftw). What is a god? Is a sufficiently powerful man a god(like Pharaohs)? If the alien-god hypothesis is true, are the extraterrestrials really gods? What are the qualifying characteristics of a god? I hereby present my candidacy for godhood.

God does not exist only in the understanding. God exists. Now, let's support premise 3 with a separate argument: If God exists only in the understanding, than a greater can be conceived; namely, one with the same properties as God, but with the additional property of existing. Then God would not be that than which a greater cannot be conceived. Thus, God cannot exist only in the understanding. Objections There's quite a few objections to the argument. The first, brought up b…

In certain religious sects having lots of facial hair in the form of a thick flowing beard is necessary or is indicated as being necessary to being a man. What if you were a male with very little facial hair. Could you still be a member? I'm just curious because I have very little facial hair but all the Taliban seem to have long full beards, is this religious or cultural or both? Americans who work closely with people from Afghanistan all wear the full beards to gain the mens trust. It occurred to me I would stand out like a sore thumb! So what is the real status of the beard thing?

In a recent thread, there was a comment that seemed to imply belief that the Bible has no contractions. I, however, see no reason why that would be the case. It's a collection of texts from different authors living in different places in different times; they're likely to have slightly differing beliefs on some things and they're likely to have heard slightly different versions of the stories. Many people think that the existence of contradictions means that the Bible is wrong or that it can't be trusted at all(much like the YEC's 'If you can't believe the beginning, why believe the end?'), but I also don't see any justification for that view. Not being inerrant does…

This question comes up somewhat often on religion boards. Personally, I think it's rather irrelevant as truth does not depend upon whether or not it benefits you. However, this question can, imo, be given a satisfactory answer. Atheism offers the same thing theism offers; an response to a metaphysical proposition. Neither offer any more or any less. Neither offer hope, freedom, love, morality, etc. Neither offer a framework for belief; They only offer a metaphysical proposition that informs a framework that the (a)theist may adopt. Everything else are just add-ons that depend on the person and further clarification of their belief. You can't tell anything about a …
