I learned the most because of lemur and catalysts like him.

They know enough to ask a lot of questions and speculate, but are frequently off the mark and therefore generate a lot of discussion (often entertaining, always educational) and nuanced explanations by the experts.

They get money for their such important and useful services.

No, they do not. On pretty much every forum you will ever visit, Admins and Mods are members just like you, except they simply have a few extra account permissions and have agreed to try doing their part to help the site run smoothly. There is no payment involved, despite the mountains of headache and frustration.

Only indirectly, through speaking tours, autographs and product endorsements. ;)

And apparently our services aren't even that useful. We don't even get to run our own awards anymore. :(

Here's the proper format: (and it's OK that rktpro took the initiative; it shows that you guys care :) )

Please read the list below carefully, and re-read your post before posting it.

In this thread, you are allowed to nominate one member for each of the following six categories:

Most Helpful Member: who gives the best answers in the nicest way?

Most Knowledgeable Member: who displays the most consistent knowledge in any (or many) fields?

Most Interesting Member: who's posts are a must read for their diverse content?

Best Debater: the member who you think uses the best debating techniques on the forums.

Most Enjoyable Member: this is a fun category; who makes you laugh the most?

Most Improved Member: who has improved their quality of posts the most in the past twelve months?

The Rules

You are allowed to nominate one, and only one person for each category. Your last post on this thread will be counted as your nominations; any previous posts will be deleted. Even so, please try and get it right the first time.

Please do not nominate any members of staff or resident experts. If you do so, then these will be deleted. This is all about you guys in the community. Here is the Staff List - To clarify, this is Administrators, Super Moderators, and Resident Experts.

Please, reply to this post with the following format:

Quote

1. Member name

2. Member name

3. Member name

4. Member name

5. Member name

6. Member name

Each member name corresponds to the appropriate category. Be careful not to mix them up, because we won't know and don't have the time to check! If you don't know how to format your post like this, then look at the BBCode Guide before you post.

Any posts not of this form will be deleted. The mods will hopefully show no mercy on this point, since I have to go through all of these posts at the end of the day.

You are allowed to nominate one person for up to two different categories.

You are not allowed to nominate yourself.

If, for whatever reason, you do not wish to nominate somebody for a particular category, then please leave that name blank. However, you must submit a nomination for at least one category.

This thread will remain open until the 2nd November 2011. After that, no more nominations will be accepted.

Nominations must have made at least 5 posts in the time since the last nominations closed.

1. Schrodinger's hat

2. insane_alien

3. DrRocket

4. CaptainPanic

5. timo

6. lemur

(I chose lemur for the last category based on the assumption that since he's last posted here, he's started writing in paragraphs. I had a look at a few of his most recent posts and saw that they were either two paragraphs or two sentences, which I guess is indication of progress :P )

rktpro, thanks for taking this on, it seems we missed it this year!

Just one thing -- usually when we do it, we have a set of basic rules just to make things fair. Here's last year's thread (by ydoaPs):

http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/49983-user-awards-2010/

So the rules for the previous years are listed below. rktpro, if you're up to it, please take the lead on this one, as you've started the thread and seem to be active! Thanks for that.

Here's last year's rules, which should mostly be observed this year too:

It looks like Klaynos forgot again, so I'll just leave this here. :P

They're the same basic format as the last four years (just a little later again!), with nominations (this thread) for all the awards and then threads for the final votes.

Please read the below carefully, and re-read your post before posting it.

In this thread, you are allowed to nominate one member for each of the following six categories:

rktpro, contact me if you want anything else done this year, but i think this can be fairest and easiest for counting later. We could publish your winners at the end.

Good luck y'all,

~mooey

So? If Phi is the best, let's give all the prizes to Phi. I'm serious, why can't the best win?

I concur, Mods and Experts are all members and I don't think an unfair advantage is conferred upon them in a poll because they are so...at the end of the day, we have ordinary members that are every bit as knowledgeable and expert as the staff. It's just that the staff are the nominated referees but they work at it just like the rest of us and exceptional <insert quality> should be recognised regardless of forum status. Let it be a level playing-field for everyone is my opinion.

It's just that the staff are the nominated referees [...]

This is a good point. Staff voting, staff receiving votes, and staff playing the referee may seem like a conflict of interests... but I trust them enough to ask them to fully participate.

But regardless of that previous remark, I cannot understand why we (the plebs) shouldn't be allowed to vote for them - there can be no conflict of interests.
