As you can see, we've re-emerged from our downtime on a new hosting service and on the latest version of our Invision forum software. There will undoubtedly be some kinks to work out from the upgrade. One notable change: you must now log in with your email address, not your username.

We'll be checking out the settings and adjusting to the new version, but let us know if you spot any problems.

Go to Leaderboard, Past leaders and start clicking on 2, 3, 4 etc. It doesn't switch the page. Firefox on Linux on a PC.

The number of likes and posts is not an exact number, but with the suffix k.

Hmm, strange. The admin panel does say the software is currently "Rebuilding forums counts", so it may need to recalculate a bunch of statistics. We can check again when it's done and see if things are working then.

Well I don't want to clog up this thread but I couldn't find a way to start my own comment thread.

So

1) Notifications, messages and activity list successfully migrated.

2) Login now demands and email address. I really had to scratch my head to find a suitable one.

3) The create table option in the input editor looks good. I will try it out at the next op. Hope it will be so much better than doing it with Tex.

4) Earlier versions used to display what an online user was doing. I found that very helpful in discussion, sometimes, Can it be recreated ?

5) I'm glad to see that the super/sub script options still there, even if it is now two clicks away instead of one.

6) The insert line before quote is really useful, I have often want that on the old one. Haven't yet tried to quote selected text. Can't seem to delete the whole quote though, again a useful thing to do sometimes.

7) Is there any possibility of this new system autonumbering the posts in a thread? I am sure this would help to shorten many arguments in a discussion.

There is no LaTex!

[math]r = \sqrt {\frac{{78.5}}{\pi }} \simeq \sqrt {\frac{{78.5}}{{\sqrt {10} }}} = \sqrt {\frac{{7.85*10}}{{\sqrt {10} }}} = \sqrt {7.85*\sqrt {10} } = 4.98[/math]

[math]\left[ {\begin{array}{*{20}{c}}

Here's a new line!

I use ctrl-a to select everything and then press enter and then ctrl-v to have a new line at the top. Yes, it is annoying. But on mobile devices probably even more so.

Alternatively, you can press enter in an empty answer, then select someone's text and quote it. The new line will still be at the top.

Should be fixed now. I'll need to tweak it, since it's an old version of MathJax, but it should behave the same as the old system now.

I can't find any settings about this -- not sure if it was removed in the new version or what.

It looks like Invision is opposed to a feature like that because the numbers would change if posts are deleted, threads are merged, etc. That's a rare enough case, but I guess they don't want to do it.

I’ve just tried it in the sandbox, but it doesn’t seem to work for me, at least not using the “\ [“ syntax. What is the correct way to use it now?

\[R_{\mu \nu}-\frac{1}{2} g_{\mu \nu}R=\kappa T_{{}\mu \nu}\]

PS. Never mind, it seems to be working now.

I don't see the sense behind these icons either. I prefer the kind of layout we had: subforums just as a listing. Is this something that can be changed?

I'm sure we'll get used to it...

They haven"t been finished?

I expect they can be made less conspicuous when the individual pictures are added in their places.

After five minutes scrolling all the way to bottom of homepage I was unable to find the New Posts button, which used to be handily situated atop the homepage. Am I missing something, or is my tablet not showing a complete page somehow? And yes, ditch the giant illustration boxes for each forum - a simple tight list is sufficient.

This is the feedback phase of restarting the forum - that means we don't have to get used to clunky and unsightly. Tweaks and nips and tucks can be made.

Agree. I thought this might be a preference option but couldn't find any way to change it.

Indeed, we just have to agree that it's equally unlikely...

It's up at the top:

And yeah, I agree the forum icons are a bit silly. I'll see if that can be adjusted in the settings.

Apparently none of that (pic of Bohr atom, browse, activity, leaderboard) loads on an Android tablet. So I think that answers my question about desktop/laptop v tablet or cellphone. I will try turning on the Show Desktop Page option, see if that works, though it usually makes for a very crowded page with minuscule text and buttons.

I don't have a tablet handy right now, but do you have the hamburger menu somewhere? That opens a navigation menu with the activity link:

Problems with password reset and account creation not sending out confirmation emails, I know @Cap'n Refsmmat is aware but just to keep track of the early issues I'm putting them here. I was able to get back in but other long-term users may be having problems we aren't aware of.

If anyone is having trouble getting the "contact us"form to send a confirmation email, enter "contact us" from the password reset or account creation areas. That's how I got through to administration when I was having trouble getting back into this account. All fixed now! Just putting this here for anybody else that can still read but can't login.

Earlier today I made a change to our email configuration. (Previously our DNS listed our old server as the only host allowed to send email from scienceforums.net, so emails from the new service were more likely to be flagged as spam.) If any of you get notification emails from SFN, can you let me know if you've received any in the past 6 hours or so, or receive any soon? That would help check if something is broken with the email sending.

I don't have a tablet handy right now,...

On a PC you can simulate mobile devices.

On Firefox simply press ctrl+shift+m and reload page.

On Chrome follow f.e. this:

"Method 1: Using Device Simulation in Chrome DevTools for Mobile View

  1. Open DevTools by pressing F12.

  2. Click on the “Device Toggle Toolbar” available.

  3. Choose a device you want to simulate from the iOS and Android devices list.

  4. Once the desired device is chosen, it displays the mobile view of the website."

Nothing has reached me boss.
