You can use calipers to measure (not calculate) a diameter

Depending on precision and tolerances, anything from a simple pair of outside calipers, to a microscope and up to Vernier calipers for greatest precision.

If its a regular rounded object like a sphere you just use simple math which you can find on the internet to find its measurements. If the object is round and not regular like an irregular blob of some sort, these days you use a 3D laser to measure its volume/surface...it has no diameter because its irregular.

Maybe you mean volume not diameter ?

Micrometer? (small scale caliper as mentioned above).

These days there's a reasonable chance that I'd take a picture of the object and a ruler at the same time (and at the same distance) and then measure the distances on the screen.

How do u do that?

Using smartphone camera, and some kind of 2D painting application..
