  1. The scriptures and the bible of course, give us reasonable, general moral and virtue values, although at other times it gives us the exact opposite. And that's about where it ends. In reality it is generally an entirely mythical book, written in an obscure age, by obscure writers, in an equally obscure manner, including any magical return, since there is really no other credible evidence to account for any arrival of any God or son of God in the first instant.. I need not really procede any further, as it is nicely summed up with the first reply thus...

  4. More obtuseness: difficult to comprehend : not clear or precise in thought or expressionIt is also, unfortunately, ill-written, and at times obtuse and often trivial https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/obtuse Earth at one time certainly did rotate faster, making a day shorter, but it had nothing to do with what you are suggesting. It was due to gravitational interactions with the Moon, which was also closer, perhaps about half its present distance. Nonsense. The Earth's rotation is continually slowing by a couple of cm's a year, and at the same time, the Moon is increasing its orbital distance from us. This will continue until a day on Earth, is equal to a lunar month, and Earth will always have one side facing the Moon, just as the Moon now has one side facing the Earth. Not to be too concerned, this will not happen until a couple of billion years, which co-incedentlally is around the same time as our Sun will be approaching its red giant phase. In other words, nothing religious about it at all...just simply science, cosmology, and the known laws of gravity. Everything has a "use by date" https://www.space.com/40802-earth-days-longer-moon-movement.html
  5. *shrug* I don't need defending old mate, and I use science appropriatley. Regarding yourself, that's entirely up to you, but please, stop being so philosophically dramatic about it. ps: I did forget to mention that when I used the word "obtuse" regarding yourself, I used it for the express purpose and meaning thus......"difficult to comprehend : not clear or precise in thought or expression" It is also, unfortunately, ill-written, and at times obtuse and often trivial.โ€” Shirley Hazzard. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/obtuse And as mentioned, I am not the first to express thoughts on your "cryptic" posting style.
  6. Sadly, there are always bad eggs as you have continually been shown., no matter how much money you throw at rehabilitation. Such monsters need to be locked up, irrespective. That's the way it is. A lock em up, throw away the key scenario. I'll certainly argue that point until the cows come home, at least for myself. Again, perhaps if you were more inclined to debate facts rather then some unworkable philosophy and politics you hold to, you wouldn't be so blinkered. ps: Attests to the fact that prison systems (sadly) are getting harsher for the incorridgibes.

  9. Sure, not too much argument from me on that score, but it is far more them just the odd exception. And my main focus on the one case (although I have related others) was specifically because this was an example of rehabilitation being shown, and then almost immediatly the utmost cruelty, violence and a total lack of any human emotion, taken out on a little girl, who strangely enough we never hear about now, despite that high chance of her ability to have a family taken away from her. Then we had the case this past weekend of a bloke in his 30's, raping violently a 59 year old woman, and caught in the actual act, let out on bail until next court appearence. This has the real right wing loonies, along with many normal folk and the Police Minister up in arms re the leniency shown in our judicial system. https://www.9news.com.au/national/call-for-bail-reform-after-alleged-rapist-released-from-custody-sydney-revesby-crime/28c2ad5a-088f-4a8b-9d28-2f772c3ad939 I understand where you are coming from, and String Junky, and I have thought long and hard about it. We either go hell for leather, focusing on the criminal and hope to Christ that we never make the same mistake made with my number one case with the little girl, or we go hell for leather focusing on society and the victim, and hope to Christ that we never turn a young accidental first timer into a hardened incorridgible criminal. The following silly statement made though helps no one..."Justice is about how you'd want to be treated; if you accidentally become a criminal,"
  10. But the mythical "Noah's flood" in the first instant, was only within the recognised "world" at that time (not the whole Earth the majority of which was unknown to Noah and his gang), and that recognised world was around 5000 years ago? while Pangea was around 300 million years ago? give or take....
  11. Science and the scientific methodology of course is a discipline in eternal progress. Science is what we know; philosophy is what we don't know. Bertrand Russell. The man of science has learned to believe in justification, not by faith, but by verification. Thomas H. Huxley Scientists are explorers. Philosophers are tourists. Richard Feynman Isn't there a hardware store somewhere close to you? I don't get uncomfortable when people ask me questions. I am also not a scientist. But being always open to learning, I generally reject supernatural and paranormal attempts at explanation, due to the total lack of supporting evidence. In fact in my experience in science forums, It is mostly those putting unevidenced hypothetical explanations that get uncomfortable. Hmmm, Interesting. How about those with the opinion that we have never been to the Moon? Or that 9/11 was an inside job? Or that the world/Earth is flat? Or that fairies exist at the bottom of your garden? Or any amount of religious claims etc? Everything in reality has never been peachy. We can always improve things and systems under which many of us live. All some of us can do, is help out when we can to those less fortunate, and express our pleasures or displeasures at the ballot box. One thing that always amazes me is the general persistant criticism/ derision of politicians. I always ask myself, "where do politicians come from?" If I may, and as a poor old retired maintenance Fitter/Machinist/Welder, why do you act as if the whole world is your nail and all you have is a hammer? Life is short matey, take it easy, enjoy and respect and learn from the many professionals we do have here....put your hammer away. There are many different types of nails. Or if you like, take an aspro, and have a good lie down before you chose to interact on the forum. Have fun!!!
  12. Some good points made, but really, who is to truely know. Low gravity is certainly a medical consideration as our residents in the ISS have shown after lengthy stays. The other point is if one was born on Mars, in some distant time when it maybe a second Earth, would that child then develop along the lines and dictates of the Martian gravity and be perfectly healthy? Perhaps any ill effects or anomalies would only be obvious on a ny return to Mother Earth?
  13. And then you get all offended when I call you obtuse! ๐Ÿ˜… Let me explain it further... Science generally is never 100% certain about anything. That's why we call them scientific theories. I have no scientific proof with regards to the existence of fairies either. The point is that any and all supernatural and paranormal explanations are unscientific at best and mythical nonsense at worst. I prefer to stay under the umbrella of the scientific methodology and critique and reasoning. Science has made the ID/deity explanation as superfluous at least back to t+10-35 seconds, and has reasonable speculative scenarios back further then that.
  14. Of course but the money to go around is limited, and therefor the first prioity is the vicitm. I have related one specific horrific case with the little girl and the monster. It's cases like this, where justice and society are attempting to show some understanding and rehab, only to have it thrown back into society's face. All this bloke has done is made it harder for bail and parole conditions to be extended to other probably deserving accidental criminals....I don't want to bore people but we had another example of a person yesterday in Sydney. It isn't isolated instances and again all they are doing is making it harder for the young accidental first timer. The other point of course is the cry of removing emotion and emotove reasoning. Is that really possible? or really desirable? It was emotion ( that I mentioned somewhere the other day) that lead to Australia's tough gun laws. How can any judge/jury not feel emotion in some of the worst horrific crimes one could imagine. How do we gauge mental fitness or impairment, which btw was the judgement for a murderer in another case in Melbourne yesterday. He still of course will be locked up for quite a while. If detaails of these two recent cases are required I'll gladly give the links.
  15. I did read somewhere with regards to Psychology and Psychiatry being classed as "soft sciences" rather then the "hard sciences" of Physics Cosmology etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_and_soft_science Hard science and soft science are colloquial terms used to compare scientific fields on the basis of perceived methodological rigor, exactitude, and objectivity.[1][2][3] Roughly speaking, the natural sciences (e.g. physics, biology, astronomy) are considered "hard", whereas the social sciences (e.g. psychology, sociology, political science) are usually described as "soft".
  16. That's what's so puzzling with a couple here ( not all) no one is denying that a reasonable justice system should also focus on rehabilitation, and some compassion, particularly with young first timers...but when attempts of compassion and rehabilitation is thrown back in your face, or when horrific violent crimes are commited, then its time to lock em up and throw away the key. Instead, we get political/philosophical driven crap about the victim and how its society's fault.
  17. Tonight we'll have a cover version of another great song, made famous by the Platters, and sung by Gene Pitney in this one................... This may get some glockenspiel's up and working...Anna Netbreko and a couple of other turkeys.....
  18. Not yet.๐Ÿคฃ Nup, havn't touched a drop...just typing in the dark!!๐Ÿ˜œ That's nice, see you in hell!๐Ÿคฃ
  19. A 2 hr video and you want, no demand people to watch it? I did do the next best thing though and googled this Hedges turkey....yeah just as I thought....a bloodt presbyterian minister, and worked at the christian science monitor. Yeah thatnks for your preaching but no thanks... I'm here for the science and to learn, not to listen to some damn mythical hysterical nonsense.
  20. I have only seen one forum where the rigor is more enforced then here. It isn't a better forum as a result. The more sensible application applying here is to my liking. I have also had the unfortunate pleasure of being a part of another "recognised" science forum for many years, where the rigor is near non existent. It more or less ran on the principle of quantity over quality. Plus it only really had one or two experts in various fields, which gave me more of a chance with the sciences, in my more layman's style. That still applies here of course, but with far more experts and professionals to explain in more rigorous fashion. I see it as a reasonable mix. With the rather large number of professionals here, I'm certainly learning all the time, with the hard sciences. And I prefer to take a "middle ground"perhaps slightly left leaning with the softer sciences, and political opinions. Admittedly that midle ground, slightly left leaning approach, can have some disagreements. But even in that I'm learning much more with the methodology of debate, particularly with the more philosophical approaches of some, as against the more stable methodology of science and the rigor involved. All in all, I'm (so far) enjoying my stay. ๐Ÿ˜œ
  21. Just because the loony right is screaming from the rooftops, is no reason for the loony left to go from the sublime to the ridiculous with regards to political correctness. Whether you chose to revise your opinion or not, does not in anyway diminish the importance of the need of a well trained Police force, and the fact that they put there lives on the line everyday, irrespective of whether the circumstances mentioned have improved or not... ps: We do have a thread more appropriate to discuss this on...probably off topic here.
  22. I thought much of what is/was science fiction, is always a dream...as putting boots on the Moon once was. As per what swansont says, and not sure if this counts or not, but it's rotational/spin velocity is pretty slow...a day on Venus is longer (243 Earth days) then its year ( 225 Earth days)
  23. https://phys.org/news/2021-11-absolutely-bonkers-mars-artificial-magnetosphere.html Terraforming Mars is one of the great dreams of humanity. Mars has a lot going for it. Its day is about the same length as Earth's, it has plenty of frozen water just under its surface, and it likely could be given a reasonably breathable atmosphere in time. But one of the things it lacks is a strong magnetic field. So if we want to make Mars a second Earth, we'll have to give it an artificial one. The reason magnetic fields are so important is that they shield a planet from solar wind and ionizing particles. Earth's magnetic field prevents most high-energy charged particles from reaching the surface. Instead, they are deflected from Earth, keeping us safe. The magnetic field also prevents solar winds from stripping Earth's atmosphere over time. Early Mars had a thick, water-rich atmosphere, but it was gradually depleted without the protection of a strong magnetic field. Unfortunately, we can't just recreate Earth's magnetic field on Mars. Our field is generated by a dynamo effect in Earth's core, where the convection of iron alloys generates Earth's geomagnetic field. The interior of Mars is smaller and cooler, and we can't simply "start it up" to create a magnetic dynamo. But there are a few ways we can create an artificial magnetic field, as a recent study shows. Ideas for generating a Martian magnetic field have been proposed before, and usually involve either ground-based or orbital solenoids that create some basic level of magnetic protection. In the TV series "The Expanse," you can see a couple of scenes where you catch a glimpse of them. While this latest study acknowledges that might work, it proposes an even better solution. more at link............ the paper: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0094576521005099?via%3Dihub How to create an artificial magnetosphere for Mars: Abstract: If humanity is ever to consider substantial, long-term colonization of Mars, the resources needed are going to be extensive. For a long-term human presence on Mars to be established, serious thought would need to be given to terraforming the planet. One major requirement for such terraforming is having the protection of a planetary magnetic field - which Mars currently does not have. The Earth's magnetosphere helps protect the planet from the potential sterilizing effects of cosmic rays and also helps retain the atmosphere, which would otherwise by stripped by large solar storms as they pass over the planet. Mars does have small patches of remnant surface magnetic field, but these are localized in the southern hemisphere and are not of sufficient size or magnitude to protect the planet or a colony. In this article we explore comprehensively for the first time, the practical and engineering challenges that affect the feasibility of creating an artificial magnetic field capable of encompassing Mars. This includes the concerns that define the design, where to locate the magnetic field generator and possible construction strategies. The rationale here is not to justify the need for a planetary magnetosphere but to put figures on the practicalities so as to be able to weigh the pros and cons of the different engineering approaches. The optimum solution proposed is completely novel, although inspired by natural situations and fusion plasma techniques. The solution with the lowest power, assembly and mass is to create an artificial charged particle ring (similar in form to a โ€˜radiation beltโ€™), around the planet possibly formed by ejecting matter from one of the moons of Mars (in a fashion similar to that which forms the Jupiter-Io plasma torus), but using electromagnetic and plasma waves to drive a net current in the ring(s) that results in an overall magnetic field. With a new era of space exploration underway, this is the time to start thinking about these new and bold future concepts and to begin filling strategic knowledge gaps. Furthermore, the principles explored here are also applicable to smaller scale objects like manned spacecraft, space stations or moon bases, which would benefit from the creation of protective mini-magnetospheres.
  24. Sorry, where did I mention anything about bad manners? Some political correctness is bordering on insane, as most agreed in another thread. I may as well destroy all my musical cd's. Vote in the politicians with enough intestinal fortitude that will support reasonable gun laws that can limit gun violence, eliminate voter suppression, stop racial discrimination, build more public housing and eliminate child poverty. Also on a more personal level, instead of rhetoric, there are orginizations where you can donate money to help with child poverty. Myself and my good wife already have two sponsored African children. On Police raids and shootings, understand that Policing, along with prisons etc, are necessary evils, and what should be done, is stricter investigations and training of police, understanding that they take their lives in their hands everyday when they are out on the beat, and of course, they would be the first one's you would call if you were to be confronted by some approaching gun wielding maniac, or if your property was invaded. That would be an accurate statement would it not?
