    A statement of faith

A Beautiful Lie Over Christmas and New Year I lost my Nan. She was my last grandparent and I was very close to her all my life. I loved her very much. I sat with her in hospital over the last few days as she was prey out of it on morphine. We knew she was going to go and she was very very accepting of it. She was always very practical. We had discussed christianity over the years, she said she believed it and was very humble and giving, but never really went to church (I dragged er there once or twice). She smoked and sweared a lot... she was the kindest person I knew. Over the last few years or so we didn't talk about god at all. I decided NOT to tell her about my atheism... I didn't want to frighten her... it didn't seem necessary. Anyway... on the 2nd of January I got some alone time with her (we had been there for days)... I decided to pray for her. I prayed audibly so that she would hear. I though that if god was not real then it would not matter and if he was real then I would pray as honestly as I have ever done. I prayed that god would send his holy spirit to her to comfort her and to bring her peace, to keep her safe in love and joy and peace with him forever in love. I prayed for baptism in the holy spirit. She heard me pray and I could tell from her expressions and the sounds she uttered that she thought the experience was lovely. I could tell that she had experienced something similar to what happened to me when I was first baptised in the holy spirit. It was a beutiful experience when it happened to me and I hope and pray that it happened to her also. She passed away about 10 mins later when my mum and auntie came back... she died with her little head in my hands. She was amazing! I loved her very much. Now - the beautiful lie is... that I wanted her to believe that she was being baptised in the holy ghost... I wanted her to feel the peace, the love, the joy, the super emotion that comes with that belief. I wanted her to believe and feel what I had done years before. I wanted her to accept what was happening with joy and peace and comfort. I believe that she did. ...... If it is true, then fantastic... I do not think it is true though... I think what happened to her was psychological, emotional and the result of years of conditioning and belief. Even so I am glad that it happened the way that it did and I would lie to her again in that same moment were we to relive it... Thanks for reading friends... I still stand by everything I wrote in this thread. x
  3. Maybe Mr T - some reckon that the 10,000 hours is more important than the talent.. that the practice and repetition pays off over raw talent.... What you are looking for is someone with the raw talent and the drive to put in 10,000 hours!... This is not the only factor - they need supporting parents that will drive them to tournaments and buy the kit for them also.
  4. Why Rob? Do you think I am wrong? Do you think it is telepathy that he is experiencing? *shakes head* Some people do seem to be naturally discerning. Some are over sensitive - I have had experiences with these types of people. Back in my spiritual days it was said that Discernment was a gift of the Holy Ghost. I just reckon some people are very sensitive to the body language of others.. but this is just speculation of sorts. No - I do not have a medical background (other than doing a short course on medical physics). But it seems pretty plain to me that he is NOT telepathic and I do not need a medical degree to conclude that.
  5. EE - a bunch opf teenagers saying "we're so cool" is NOT uncommon.. Nor is someone leading an ill looking/feeling person out to get fresh air.. You are having delusions in my book.
  6. The top pros of most sports these days train for 10,000 hours... 'they' reckon that after 10,000 hours of repetition you ingrain your skill so it is just intuitive and you are less likely to choke under pressure. Tiger Woods, for example, used to wake up in the morning every day and very first thing hole 100 6 foot puts... if he misses then starts again until he got 100 straight.... then it's off for breakfast and more training/practice. Most start SO young too (3 or 4 years old) - so they have their 10k hours ranked up WAY before they are even playing for serious money. I saw some guy with the yips one sunday playing golf (another mental sporting problem). I had to say to him 'you gotta stop that because I can't even watch it and it is actually PAINFULL for me to watch' - It'll put me off too.. just hit the thing!" It seemed like a mental illness even to me - lol
  7. Used to happen to me on the golf course... I wanted to get my handicap down too badly and choked it all the time in the medals.. My best round in a medal ever was 5 under gross.... I got the mental part right for that round and a few others around the time. I had to get into the mind set of thinking that it was normal to be sub par... what else would I be expecting... shrug it off and continue... take the emotion out of it and feel chuffed afterwards in the bar.
  8. @imatfaal: Mine too - my spelling can be atrocious! Although it seems ok today! lol. Sometimes I have to retype a word 6 or 7 times and still get it wrong... I have to type it into a spell checker or google even for the spelling. Usually I have put an I before an e or the other way round or an SC for a cc or a cc rather than sc or an ss rather than just an s etc.. sometimes, when I am tired especially, it can REALLY get me down that I have to look up how to spell something at my age... I have been like it all my life... even very short 'easy' words on some days and other days fine - Stupid? Maybe, but I managed to get a science PhD anyway, back in the days when we would be marked down in Chemistry for poor grammar or spelling during written answers too. Basically, I have always believed that I could be partially dyslexic, therefore, I forgive myself easily if I start feeling very dumb after failing to write something. (Yay!! only one word needed correcting in the whole lot - I'm having a good day!)
  9. A friend of mine claims he is tone deaf. I heard him whistling 'Rudulf the Red Nosed Reindeer' over Christmas and he was hitting the tune spot on. I told him that he was not tone deaf, or he wouldn't be able to carry that tune. He got quite angry and insisted that he was tone deaf. I think he is exaggerating - he probably can't sing or is very bad at it and lacks confidence with singing... maybe his parents shouted at him to shut up when he tried singing when he was a kid or something like that because there seems an overly defensive insistence on his being 'tone deaf'. Not being able to sing in tune is not the same as being tone deaf. Vitul - are you actually tone deaf? Does that mean you can't tell the difference between different pitches? Can you tell if someone else is singing out of key?
  10. I hear that - I think I might try to stay out of it... listen to a few argument summaries nearer the time and decide then... I think I know what side I am on though, although I feel for the nationalists a little, I don't think they really know what they are talking about though and are taking an awful risk in trying to leave. What ever happens though, I would hope that collabs between uni's and international post doc placings would be safe. Will sit and watch.
  11. I am no authority on the subject and being honest... at the moment I would vote to stay in. However I am fearful of listening to too much fearmongering about this and that being ruined if we leave... there is no proof that we won't still uphold our good relations with the EU, no reason to suggest we won't still be able to exchange students and post docs (unless you have something other than reactionary outcries from uni staff). I hope it is just propaganda aimed at trying to get a no vote, because if we do leave, I would hope that cross collaborative research projects would continue in the same spirit that they have done over the past few decades. Interesting times...

    Ethics of Awesomeness

Awesome is defined as something that inspires awe. I would have thought this definition to be fine. I do not think the word has gone beyond any (correct) definition of the word according to the dictionary (the correct source for the definition of words - not a quote from some random bloke on the internet). So - 'being awesome in society' means that you inspire awe and wonder in others in society, presumably from your good or amazing deeds or looks or sound or anything else that inspires awe.

    Ethics of Awesomeness

Well, you kinda get used to it after a while. ;-)
  14. I see what you are saying RR... but that kinda thing we do learn at GCSE level chemistry... Look at the history of the atom... it is a lovely story about our model of the atom changing with time. All the models were 'correct' and still hold for the limited understanding and info the scientists had at the time. Johnsone's plumb pudding! He was absolutely correct in his hypothesis that atoms were made from separate positive and negatively charged bits. He postulated a positive pudding with negative plumbs in it... he was right! To a degree... since then Bohr moved the theory on by showing there was a positive nucleus with the electrons orbiting this.. etc. etc. onto modern day models which are being refined continuously. It is how it works. Do you have any scientific background?
  15. OK - The evidence for this cough CPR is anecdotal at best... (at work - cannot link)... Statements by the American Heart Association and the Resuscitation Council UK suggest that there is no evidence for this (or against it though)... However, if alone and having a heart attack I would give it a go... I think the coughing part and chest thumping might just come naturally... anyway, the laryngeal nerve will probably play no part either so it's diversion around the heart is seeminly meaningless (and a pretty good case for evolution). ;-)
  16. Laryngeal nerves are a very strong case that evolution is a real thing. It kinda clears it all up for me anyway. The Laryngeal nerve in a giraffe is clear evidence for either evolution or very flawed design. I did try to come up with a reason why it would be beneficial to have your laryngeal nerve go down and around your aorta... it was very, very sketchy at least - hear goes anyway: I read recently that you can survive a heart attack and a stopped heart by self cardial massage through powerful coughing that can and has been know to kickstart the heart much like CPR as the chest contracts and squeeses the heart during the coughing. If this nerve runs right round your aorta then I can see that mabye (MAYBE!!! clutching at straws... very fine breakable straws!!)... maybe during a heart attack this coughing could be helped by shouting and that the laryngeal nerve could tighten and pull up on the heart and help with this self massaging CPR...... but as I was typing it out it seemed so stupid I nearly just hit the delete button on my whole post. - lol.
  17. QUOTE OP:- "we came across many videos which shows object that do not follow the laws.." I've never seen one - can you point them out to us please.
  18. How flexible? Those water based caulks (like 'no more nails') and building adhesives dry hard but there is some give in them (slight flexibility). They stick well to anything too and are easy to spread and apply. Does it need to be waterproofing? Would just some PVA wood glue do? That can be quite flexible as it is just a load of polymer with some filler. Further thoughts.... if you use a polymer cement, like the type you mention where it melts/dissolves the plastic and forma a weld, might not be that usable with such a thin sheet of plastic bad... it might melt straight through. Oh - sorry - is that what you are trying to fix in your link? I'm not sure my suggestions are suitable for that - lol.
  19. It's 'easy' for the people who invented it/made it up..... why do you think it is not so easy for others then? You can look at the 'noo sphere' too... it is also complete BS, but you might be interested in it. I don't understand though how you can be told that it was made up by someone who is either mad or just a con artist..... and then take it seriously as if you believe it works... you know this is a science site right RR? :-/ .......... PS:- Once - I was walking across uni campus at 2 am with an exam the next morning on the topic of Physical chemistry... I decided to revise whilst walking... I could remember the lecture our professor gave and in my mind I was asking him questions... I let myself entertain the idea that I was ripping the knowledge from his head through the noo sphere and from the akashic records of the group collective. This was of course complete rubbish, but it was a fun way to revise... I can honestly say that it was probably my imagination accessing my subconscious memory rather me actually accessing information from a shared intellect
  20. Actually, the alliance I was a member of was a pretty good crowd. We used to have meetings via Skype (about 20 of us) to organise our attacks on other alliences (you can't do it in faction chat as there are too many spies from other alliences). We used to hate the spoilt little brats that spent too much money on the game who were obnoxious too. lol
  21. QUOTE: "evidential support"... ... of which there is none for the psi wheel as discussed in that thread. The mechanism is well known.
  22. I used to play League of Legends. I loved it but it was too time consuming. I hear what you say about kids being nasty on there, but you can play different servers until you find one with a community you like and get along with. There are rude people wherever you go. I do not agree with your synopsis about it being negative only. Whatever the hobby, whatever the sport or club or group of people you get idiots I am afraid... you have to get used to living your life in a way that does not let these asses affect you. I do not agree with your take on porn and masturbation either.... it sounds like you have these views maybe due to some sort of religious indoctrination or something... you have been told porn and masturbation is bad so you feel guilty about doing it... drop that and start enjoying life, it's foolish to live your life bound by the chains of fear of eternal punishment for doing natural and normal things. It is this that seems evil to me - leave people alone and let them do what they want to do and get off on doing with out harming others... QUOTE:EE "this is just sad my young friend" Personally I do not find it sad that the guy enjoys games... I find it normal. What I find sad is you, with your self confessed mental problems, crippling guilt and itchy head from masturbating, your need to chastise or criticise those that watch porn, your delusion that you can move things with your mind (whilst ignoring all the evidence that points to it being a well explained phenomenon). Don't get me wrong, you seem like a nice guy and pretty interesting, but this criticising of what others enjoy (presumably due some religious indoctrination or brain washing) is sad.
  23. yea - just holding a lighter to the side and saying the heat doesn't make it move isn't good enough to debunk heat induced air currents, it's more complicated than that.... Maybe try a lighter both side and spend 30 seconds trying different positions... your hands go on both sides so you should copy that. The cupping of the hands also acts as a flu for the air to move, thus you diddn't see movement just by holding the lighter to the side. the sourounding objects can influence. Hope that helps.
  24. Playing with luminescent pigments recently I would say you want to look at phospholuminescence in particular... it lasts longer than plain old luminescence due to metastable states that the electrons fall through rather than jumping straight to the ground/bottom energy level.
