  1. I am working through a software tutorial and there are two very ambiguous equations where the variable names are not described (below) and mostly just confused about the Source document: http://ansoft-maxwell.narod.ru/en/CompleteMaxwell2D_V15.pdf

  2. ! Moderator Note this thread is a split from here http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/90145-thermodynamic-arrow-of-time-equating-entropy-and-disorder/ I completely disagree. The example is terribly misleading. The cup is a by-product of life, like an egg, or anything else that has been produced by a living being. And we know that living systems are self-organizing ones. Life create things that do not appear "just like that", as if Life was struggling against entropy. Let's take another example, say a melting iceberg. Of course you will not observe the sea water making back the iceberg. But the melted fresh water of the iceberg will mix with the salt w…

  3. I was looking at a picture of Hurricane Issac in the Wikipedia and I was struck yet again by how much they resemble the typical double spiral galaxy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Isaac_Aug_28_2012_1630Z.jpg Remembering well Feynman's Dictum that the same equations always have the same solutions, what equation do galaxies and hurricanes have in common?

Howdy all! I've ran into a slight issue and I hope you guys can clarify where I went wrong. Basically there I was today sitting at some boring meeting barely listening and out of boredom was trying to derive formulas for ballistic projectile trajectory. Unfortunately, when meeting finally finished and I went into wiki and compared what I have to what the actual formulas are mine were incorrect and I've ran some numbers and I definitely get wrong results. It's all very embarrassing, but I've checked my scribbles and all seems reasonable. Anyways, I went like this: At point 1 on the surface level we have a projectile launched with a velocity [latex]v_1[/latex] a…

  5. Hi guys, I'm using L80 quectel GPS module. Which sends the NMEA protocol data string which has latitude, longitude, UTC time, knots, etc. We are going to use this GPS module in a vehicle. We have to calculate the distance travel by the vehicle using GPS. We have to show the total distance travel by the vehicle like an odometer. Is it possible to calculate total distance travelled by vehicles using "knots" value from a GPS? If it is possible, then how to calculate? Thanks..

My professor posed a theoretical question today and I can't seem to figure this out. The prompt was this: Calculate the enthalpy change of water ΔH when 18 grams of water ice at 230 K are converted to liquid water at 350 K. Also calculate the enthalpy change of the heating block as a result of this process and the enthalpy change of the universe as a result of this process. I don't have a problem with the calculation of the enthalpy change of water etc., what I can't seem to figure out is how to prove that the enthalpy change of the universe will be zero. I was curious if anyone has been able to prove this? The best I got was ΔHsurr + ΔHsys = ΔHuniv = 0 because ΔHsu…

  7. I have been extremely confused by Stephen Hawkings broken cup analogy for years. How is entropy eqivalent to disorder and how is the cup gaining entropy, surely the cup is the same temperature? A system at equilibrium has maximum entropy, a system at equilibrium is highly ordered, it is as ordered as it can get. All parts are equal. Ordered things are easy to describe, people in uniform are easier to describe than people in fancy dress. Isn't a system where the heat is unevenly distributed is more disordered? Is something not translating from the maths to the use of english, it just seems backwards. This analogy is terribly misleading in that it makes us think of…

  10. Hello all, I am in need of some help. I work for a fire department who had a significant fire truck crash last summer. Because of this, my department has set about making a training program for our drivers. Lucky me, I am in charge of said program. So I need some help. Here is the story. Last summer one of our Ladder Trucks ( fire truck with the big long ladder on the top of the truck that extends out, not a fire engine that has water) was traveling around 58 mph on a curved road then is lost traction, slide and rolled. No one was seriously hurt. Here is what we know. Said ladder truck was traveling around 58 MPH and weight 62,500 lbs. I know, using the form…

What exactly is Magnetism ? Does it always coexist with Electricity ? What is Electricity ? What is the maximum to which Voltage an Electric Potential can be built up ? Is there a similar limit to Magnetic Strength ? Why are we unable to magnetize all materials ? What is light ? Why is light called an Electromagnetic Wave ? What is a Wave ? What exactly is the Wave Movement and Wave theory in a nutshell ? What is the relation between Sound, Force, Heat, Light and Electromagnetism ? How much Noise/thunder/Sound will emanate from Sun [in decibels] apart from other Energies ?

  13. If you were traveling at the speed the speed of light and you suddenly changed direction would you still be affected by inertia? On the one hand inertia affects all mass but on the other hand your also in your own time zone and while you'd still be subject to the same laws as everything else the time it takes to have an effect would be different right?

  14. hi there I am new! I am doing an experiment to obtain pure liquid from smoke gas from: steam boiler vs car exhaust without gass loss, then will send to a lab to analyze its CO2 and other parameters, questions: - is this liquefaction experiment possible? (do I need to cool-up smoke before and how? is this smoke liquified-able...) - which industrial device(s) to use? (cheap and small if possible, consider must absorb smoke continuously...) Thanks in advance

I know that each secondary phase will requier a different activation then the primary. 16. Thermodynamics. How to precisely measure energy released by body. Imagine circuit with resistor (heating element) with resistance R. There is also voltmeter, ampere meter connected. [math]I=\frac{U}{R}[/math] and [math]P=I*U=I^2*R=\frac{U^2}{R}[/math] R is constant (would be hard to control it in heating element underwater). Heating element is placed in water (or other liquid) with mass m, and volume V. There is also precise thermometer, stopwatch, and magnetic stirrer to uniformly spread energy in liquid. At the beginning temperature is ambient T0 read from thermometer. Say 25 C. (ambient temperature is when amount of energy released by body equals amount of energy rec…

I am a drone hobbyist and there is an argument in that community about where to place one's battery packs. They can either be placed on the top deck, strapped and hanging from the bottom deck, or ideally, they can be near the middle or center of gravity...Many folks cannot put the battery in the middle, or near the ideal center of gravity, so they must choose strapped to the top, or strapped to the bottom. I talking about a four engine craft that tilts in the direction that it moves... Is it ever advantageous to have the majority of the mass on top of any vehicle? Some folks claim that it can flip and roll better with the battery on top, but does this make any sense in…

Why do jackhammers and all other percussive drills make noise despite having a shock absorbing system? Why can't we design a structure that can get rid of the noise? we can use, may in some ways, the conservation of energy law to make use of the sound energy and in turn gain more efficiency in the drilling process. There's construction work going on in my neighborhood. Hence, this discussion.

Would it be possible to develop a road surface with peizoelectric crystals embedded in it, or just embedded in the base of the light poles on the side of the road and use the vibrations given off by traffic to generate electricity? If so this could be fed into the mains or assist in powering the road lighting directly, especially since modern lighting is LED and much more efficient. Would the cost of doing this be worth it? For example Quartz is piezoelectric and relatively abundant, do the crystals need to be of a quality that makes them expensive? Would there be a need for wiring if embedded in the carriageway itself, which would make it too expensive? Would it re…

Is it possible for a system to have a maximum ammount of disorder, ie has maximum entropy? Is this the same as equilibrium? If so, when in this state, can it change (in regards other than to heat)? Is entropy only a measure of the ordered nature of heat? Is it the same as information? Can there still be information retained in say the position of the particles, or do all the particles also have to be equidistant or completely randomly located? Does anything prevent a system at maximum entropy losing some entropy temporarily and then regaining it? Most concepts of equilibrium I've encountered is where a system will flow back and forth between states, but not simply rest…

The textbook description of how airfoils lift is somewhat flawed. From grade school to pilot schools we are told the Airfoil- shape or path-length explanation of airfoil lift. That is the top of the wing being curved more so air must go farther and faster to meet at the back of the wing resulting in the wing being sucked up a la Bernoulli.Largely incorrect. There is no suction and the parcels of air divided by the leading edge dont meet as such.I assume that a little lift comes from this effect though it isnt the major factor.. The Newtonian or Attack angle explanation is a better description.Air is deflected downward and Newton's 3rd law comes into play. The airfoil i…
