Well, lately I've been having some computer trouble (which is part of the reason of why I haven't been posting in a while), and I can't figure out why it's happening. I upgraded my RAM, so now I'm up to a measly 1.5 GB. This is where I started getting trouble. After I put in the chip, I turned on my computer and it gave me a message saying 'Diskette Drive 0 Failure'. After about 5 seconds, this message goes away. The first day I upgraded RAM my computer was running faster than I had ever seen it (I could actually run BioShock on all high settings, and getting at least 40 FPS). The day after it was significantly slower, and the day after that more slow, and today I ca…

Can someone please explain how to install Firefox 3 on Fedora? The Windows installation was simple, but I can't find an executable installation program for the Linux version. I tried running "yum update firefox" in the terminal, but that only downloaded Firefox 1.0. I also tried manually copying the FF3 files over the FF1 files, but then Firefox wouldn't open at all. Is there an installation wizard for the Linux version?

Well, lately I've been thinking about making the switch from Windows XP to Ubuntu, not that I've really been having issues with XP, but just because I like Ubuntu a little better. As a few of you (Cap'n Refsmmat, insane_alien) may know, I tried to boot it up on my sister's old laptop, and in the process of making a partition, the laptop shut off, and I still cannot turn it on. On the computer I'm using now, a more powerful desktop, I tried using the Live CD to run it, and it seemed to work fine...with the exception of it not having internet... Also, I've heard from some people that Linux doesn't support as many programs as XP does, is this all that true? One of my frie…

I'm looking for software to log an Internet connections down times. When it is working and when no data can be sent\received logged into a file. Idearly It would give a little more information than that. It does not matter if the file can only be viewed from whiten the program but the program must be free or very cheap and may need to be able to be run on many PC's. Any Ideas?

Hey guys, I recently had to get into Joomla! and it's quite okay for certain purposes. The new 1.5 version is a bit more versatile than the 1.0 but still isn't fully supporting all the previous modules and components out there. I had to deal with a certain module that handles event listing and I found it lacking a certain (VERY important for my use) feature. I know PHP/mySQL and I know - relatively well - how joomla works, but I couldn't find any good tutorials (over the silly 'hello world' ones) that explain how to write modules or components, or how to expand existing ones. Specifically, I'm looking for the correct way to have the module communicate with the…

Does anyone know which ISPs allow you to host a website from my PC computer? Some don't allow static IPs and IP forwarding(if you have a router, I do). Some ISP(all in America) examples would be: Verizon Time Warner Comcast Adelphia

I'm going to purchase a new laptop over the summer, and I've been contemplating my options. I would like to get a regular PC, but I would have to upgrade it to XP since it is generally agreed that Vista's not that great. Also, I would still have to put in the proper antivirus and other security software on it to ensure that it will last a long time. On the other hand, I've been thinking about getting a Mac, since they have better security, better operating system, and so on. But, the problem with a Mac is that you really can't install a great deal of things on it because of the operating system, especially PC games. However, what would you suggest? I'm trying…

I've been researching how to get gold and platinum out of old computers and it's easier said than done. I have experience in refinning and all that and it's been hard to get straight answers without giving a credit card number so my age can be checked, anyway, google pointed me to this site, which I came across several times. I decided to register and check out what's out there. I'm new to the treading stuff. This site seems pretty intresting. Any answers for me out there?

Whenever I log onto my hotmail email account, my password never works the first time, but always does the second time. I type it in letter by letter to make sure I don't make mistakes, but it still never works the first time. This has been going on too long and on every computer I've tried. Is this some sort of weird hotmail thing, or am I in the twilight zone?

For quite some time I've had a problem with connecting to my friend's IP (and vice versa). At first I thought it was a simple firewall issue but it seems that that's not the case since the problem persists even when firewalls are disabled. We've been trying to counter this with various P2P programs, some of which offer some sort of relay/proxy system, with no results. What makes this even more confounding is that the problem exists in some cases even when a third party has hosted a game or network. For instance I can't connect to someone's Dawn of War game if my friend has joined it already and vice versa. The connection isn't completely "severed" apparently, since someti…

New linux user here. (mandriva 2008) I'm having some problems with audio. First of all, the audio on .m4a files isn't working. Could this be a codec problem? Also, plugging in headphones essentially doesn't do anything. No sound comes through, but sound is still coming through the system speakers. Soundcard: Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) HD Audio Controller driver: snd_hda_intel Audio device: ALSA Thanks in advanced __________________________________________ UPDATE: Apparently, in trying to fix the other problem, I've created an entirely new problem. Now, the sound is completely broken. I'm getting this error message: "Sound se…

Does anybody else get this? On my previous computer, it did it. Then, when I upgraded to this computer, they ran fine, but now it does it often enough. I'm thinking that I probably have more stuff running in the background for some reason and taking up enough RAM, but I just wanted to check. [edit] Yeah, never mind. Even for Linux, 256 MB is not enough anymore, as it has 76 MB free of RAM and using 195 MB of swap, as well, without even running a video. But then, when I run a video, it has a very trivial effect on the numbers - like only a few kb/sec. Ahh, the ones that skip download at about 175 kb/sec. Also, does anybody know why ipv6 keeps turning itself bac…

First of all, my heart goes out to anyone who actually cares enough to read this, let alone respond. Most of these problems, if not all, I suspect are related. But I have no idea where to look, or what hardware to check out or suspect. 1) When playing Madden 2006, the only computer game I play and the only graphics heavy application I run, the computer will just restart at some seemingly random moment. Sometimes 5 minutes into a game, other times well after an hour of playing. I’ve used two different video cards now, and this happens regardless. 2) Sometimes the computer will just suddenly freeze. Will stop responding altogether and will presumably stay…

Well, here I am with another C oriented question. To put it simply, what if an unsigned long long int data type just isn't enough? If you want a specific example of why I need this; I made a program that generates Fibonacci Numbers. You can input how many numbers you want generated. Unfortunately, I can't generate more than 94 of them, because then the numbers are just too big for the data type to remember. How can I get around that? I know it must be possible, otherwise how could we know for example that the biggest prime number (yet found I mean) is [math]2^{32,582,657}-1[/math]? Thanks in advance for any help

This actually happened yesterday. I'm not entirely sure if it is the hard drive. I just wanted to get some feedback. This is some of what it spits out. I'm already shopping for a new computer. I thought about replacing the hard drive, but the integrity of the rest of the components is questionable. hda1 contains file system with errors, check forced duplicate or bad block in use multiply-claimed blocks in inode 508023: 1075028 1075028 2 multiply-claimed blocks unexpected inconsistency, run fsck manually fsck died with exit status 4 auto file system check of root failed manual fsck must be performed and computer must be re-started fsck should be done in ma…
