  1. Hi community, I am currently applying for a grant to further study marine turtles in the South-East Asian country Timor-Leste. Together with a small team, we were able to tag two green turtles this year and we will continue with this work next year to build a database and get a broader understanding of the turtle populations in the country. It looks like I am a bit lost in terms of planning and I want to make the most of the project. I will only be able to spend a bit more than a month in the country early next year (nesting season) working together with two local students I met during my last two trips to the country. I am a marine biology student and just fini…

  2. This seems to be the most appropriate place to put this one, I have been confronted by a someone who from what I can tell is a conservative Christian, he places the claim that transgender people are not a thing and that they are assigned their gender at birth and that human gender is exclusively for reproduction and hormones and sexuality and psychological factors are irrelevant. I provided a paper from the Harvard University on the subject, it shows the issue to transcend basic reproduction, yet when I provide that all I get in reply is that I am wrong because doctors assign gender at birth and that even surgery won't change that. I ask them to back that up with evidence…

  3. My favorite local park is unfortunately place below a road, which has turned it into a dumping ground. I have spent a considerable amount of time, money, and effort removing as much of the trash as I can, but the process raises some questions about which items are worth the effort. Some items seem like they have a pretty low impact other than being an eyesore, like glass. other items require a disproportionate effort due to size, weight, and location. The park service has told me that some of them are not worth removing because the impact of digging them out, and erosion in hauling them out of the park outweighs the environmental impact of leaving it there, like car …

Hi there, I thought that this would be an interesting topic to discuss with some other minds as I came across the idea on holiday when there were a lot of them. Mosquitoes are to me the most annoying insect in the world as they only seem to be keen on biting humans, if we were to have the means to completely eradicate them from the planet how would the ecosystem be affected by the change, surely whatever the mosquitoes predator is can easily find another main meal to survive on. I hope this is a good topic to discuss

  7. I'm looking for information about places around the world where hunting (especially forest animals like boars, deers) is prohibited. I need to know where such a places are, how the interactions between animals and humans look, how these interactions are changing, how hunting prohibition affects agriculture etc. I'm doing research on a possibility to coexist humans with animal species like boars without controling their population. If you know places, where from some time hunting is strictly prohibited, please let me know. I will be grateful for your help!

If social behavior is intrinsic to human existence or, is genetically facilitated for or possible by, then would understanding that in a scientific perspective help combat environmental issues? Lets say for instance that bands, or any form of social organization is hallmark to being human, as in our nature for instance, if that is so, could many modern day aspects of human civilizations such as variance with different cultures have a biological basis. I think if such was a reality that understanding that could be pivotal in aspects of environmental education. I am looking at the question from a perspective of evolution I think, with thinking that social behavior is a…

Earlier studies relating locus of control to social action have produced mixed results. The present investigation examined the moderating effects of perceived outcome on the relationship between activism in the form of anti-pollution behavior and I-E. A representative sample (n = 433) of Winnipeg's adult population was interviewed to obtain data. As predicted, among people optimistic about future levels of pollution, internally oriented individuals engaged in more anti-pollution activities. Among pessimistic respondents there was virtually no relationship between l-E and social actions. Internals also had more accurate information about environmental pollution. representa…

  11. What if we asked school students to solve real life problems? Real time? For example, a large capital city’s pollution problem? What if they had to bring common sense and learning to the table, work with each other and suggest a solution that might work while showing them how their learning was useful to real life? They might just bring amazing new solutions that are welcome, and they will certainly bring a whole new level of appreciation of learning.

People, I grow some plants, and make up my own fertilizer recipes - very economical. But recently Ive found that mold grows sometimes in a solution of nutrients, for example, iron and calcium in DI water. What about benzalkonium chloride? Would that be toxic to plants? If not, at what ppm or percent should I make? I also thought about copper especially since plants do need copper, and one recipe does include Cu, although, I would have to be careful on overdoing the Cu level. Boron? Any advice appreciated!

So photosynthesis can be flipped either way and i was just wondering why we don't find a way to artificially produce chlorophyll so we can put them in missles and shoot them up into clouds to interact with all the co2 in the ozone causing it to change into sugars and water. why can't this take place in a cloud or on a body of water with just outside the plant. or artificially combine porphyrin with a magnesium ion, why wouldn't that work exactly. I'm saying why can't you synthetically produce the catalyst that causes this reaction to occur?

Hello, I am looking for help with a presentation I am doing for my Microbiology class. I am doing a research presentation on tardigrades (aka water bears or moss piglets). As part of this project, I decided to "hunt" for some tardigrades of my own and successfully found some in a Spanish moss sample collected nearby a local lake. In the sample, I noticed several cells that appear to be peritrichous with an "x" in the nucleus. The tardigrades appeared to gather around these cells and even possibly cling to them. I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas as to what they could be so I could do some further research and maybe describe a possible relationship between…

  21. Hi There, I stumbled across some information about "Palm Grass" speculating that it acts as an antenna for geomagnetic fields (palm-1.jpg). I've got a lot of these plants growing on my property and at first observation I'm 99% sure it does oscillate randomly and without effect from wind. I put up a video showing my first observation here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egQXFflbPwU I found one inconclusive article about it on the internet here: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/11870160_Biological_rhythms_an_analysis_of_the_archives It seems as tho this is all just speculation, I'm thinking of conducting some amateur science on the plant to deter…

  22. I was wondering how much CO2 my garden removes from the atmosphere and how to develop a calculator for this purpose for other gardens. First thoughts are to do it by ground area and to separate the ground area into zones of different plant size (height) thus: Zone 1 - Grass and low plants less than 0.5 m high Zone 2 - Plants 0.5 to 3.0 m high eg shrub borders , hedges tall vegetables etc Zone 3 - Small trees and other plants 3m to 6m high Zone 4 - Trees taller than 6m high I would welcome comments on whether these are sensible divisions and any steers on how to obtain average CO2 reductions for them.

  25. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-36917174 It seems from early indications that the UK govts initiative to force larger retailers to charge for plastic bags (5p - ie GBP0.05) has had amazing results. First surveys seem to show that UK bag consumption will fall by around 7 billion - ie by an order of magnitude - from 7.7 billion to .7 billion. Hopefully this result is borne out by future checks and the trend continues. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-36882799 We get through 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups a year - this seems ripe for a similar measure. Someone reading (especially if of a certain age) will be thinking beer/pop bottles an…
