Hi, all. I'm in desperate need of some answers on whether it would likely be safe to move into a house that was a former meth lab 15 years ago... I need to know if the ingredients used to produce methamphetamine break down or biodegrade over time. And how much they do so. The house I'm about to move into was used as a meth lab by a tenant back in 2002. The police dealt with them. It's had various tenants since then, but no more drug incidents according to the police. After 15 years, would the ingredients used to cook meth have broken down or biodegraded significantly? I looked up a list of the chemicals used and tried to research this on my own, but I don't ha…

I'm going to do a lab, but the only rule is that is has to do with "vitamine C content". Does anyone have an idea for a research question? E.g. "what is the vitamine C content in an orange?". I could choose that but it seems boring. Also, this is 35% of my final grade. PLS i needs das helps.

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I was curious if anybody could explain or link to an article that would explain how to predict the product of a reaction? I know how to balance chemical equations but I have never gotten this. Thanks in advance

Can anybody suggest how hydroxyl value of polyesters can be determined.why the standard titration methods are showing inconsistent results. What r the reliable methods of determining molecular weight of polyesters ?

Hi all, I'm looking for a setup to block 100% of UV light from windows. I understand that standard glass blocks the majority of UVB rays, but it lets UVA rays in, so I need to find a way to block those as well. Here's what I'm planning so far. I will put Gila window film on the windows first. This film blocks around 98-99% of UV rays, or at least that's what it claims. I have read that window films often neglect to mention that the films can't block the upper spectrum of UVA rays (380-400 nm). I have confirmed this by asking the manufacturers of films for their performance data, so I will only rely on the film as an extra, not the main line of defense against UV. …

Hi guys, I am currently learning how to use molecular dynamics software as part of my Masters and I am trying to model the crystal structures of the different phases for a Copper and Zirconium alloy. I already know what phases are present in this alloy, however I have no information regarding the crystal structure of each phase and the coordinates of the atoms within this structure. For instance, I already that the CuZr phase corresponds to a B2 and a B1 crystal structure, however I don't have any information regarding the rest of the phases. Would any of you know where to get this information? These are the different phases, which I have taken from a phase diagram:…

Hello friends! Hoping someone here can help me out. I'm a digital artist by trade, so forgive me if I'm using incorrect terms. I'm interested in using paint to recreate a suspension similar to the attached picture. From what I gathered from the picture comments, it was a bucket of blue paint that sat for a year, separated from the oil(?), and the guy added a bit of yellow paint and stirred it around. Obviously I don't want to wait a year for paint to settle.. So at first I thought about using a centrifuge.. Then figured it would be easier to just buy the ingredients for paint separate (mixing pigment and binder, then adding oil(?) later on top). I …

I noticed that some metals, like copper or iron, have more than one stable isotope. For example, copper has two abundant isotopes, 63Cu and 65Cu... A short search revealed that it is possible to buy pure isotopes in powder form, I guess, for chemistry/biology research. But I did not find any data about bulk (poly)crystals made of single metal isotope. Does it mean that I should not expect any difference in properties like electric conductivity (interesting for copper) or magnetic permeability (interesting for iron) or gran size in such single-isotope metals? Why so? I hope somebody tested it.

Hello, all, I am new to this site, but I have a question relating to chemicals and how to reverse certain chemical reactions. I was cleaning a sword that was rusty with a rust remover chemical. After I was finished, I unknowingly put the napkin I was using to wipe down the blade with on the glass part of my glass table. The next day, I noticed the napkin on the table and when I picked it up, there was a white cloudy stain on the glass. I've used Windex and other glass cleaners to remove the stain, but the stain always reappears after it drys. Im thinking the rust remover has eaten away at the glass, for the area is a little ruff in comparison to the other areas of t…

Hi All, I am in the market for a colorimeter to test pool water accurately & reliably. I have been searching equipment sites & am overwhelmed with the choices & price points. I don't want to break the bank, I don't think I need to, it's just colorimetry, right? So I'm hoping some educated opinions can keep me on the right track & away from a bad value decision. I need to test: - pH - alkalinity - calcium/hardness - cyanuric acid - free chlorine Questions I need answered are: - why do most colorimeters claim they test only for a subset of the above? Isn't it just a case of adding more concentration charts? - anything wrong with buying a…

I have been offline for almost 2 years and now I am back. I hope you guys still remember me... Here is a question on physical chemistry. Simple question. It is about Valance Bond theory and the use of hybridisation/hybridization (depending on whether your English is American/British variant) concept. My teacher taught me how to explain Boron trichloride's structure using VB theory. Boron atom undergoes sp2 hybridisation. Each sp2 hybrid orbitals will have an unpaired electron that will be shared with the unpaired electron in Chlorine's 3p orbital. So, the orbital overlap diagram looks like this. (Check the attached file.) The 3 red orbitals are the 3 sp2 hybr…

Recently my grandad passed away and in his garage was a large glass bottle containing some kind of acid. This may be a simple question but how do I find what type of acid it is (e.g. Nitric, Sulfuric, Hydrochloric)? Also, how do I calculate the molarity of the acid once I know what type it is? Again, sorry if its a silly or simple question, thanks in advance

Can anyone recommend a good chemistry book for a beginner. I know I have learned up to the mol and Avogadro number so I know about isotopes and the atom. I also know a little bit about bonding but I would like a refresher on that. Thank you.

I would be most grateful if anyone can help. I am hoping to extract nickel from chocolate bars for analysis but I do not have the exact protocol for the extraction. The chocolate will need to be digested with conc nitric acid but hydrogen peroxide is also required in a Teflon vessel. The final extract will be analysed on a mass spectrometer. Can anyone help with the exact methodology for the extraction. Many thanks. Kwok

I am doing a project about finding a waste that can absorb oil the best and i want to create oleophillic yet hydrophobic coating for it to better enhance its oil absorbing property. I saw on the net that adding three valent chromnium salt to form a chromnium coating and dry it. Then adding a bridging agent with polar or nonpolar moecular structure to it will do so. I want to ask are there better ways to create such coating without using really expensive machinery or vrare chemicals. And what is the principle behind the one i found and your recommended ones. I need it by 18/3 and i just saw this net so please please help me thank you so much

So I'm actually a Maths teacher, but I do 7th grade science. The other teacher told me to do this experiment with putting nitric acid on a coin. He made it seem like it would just bubble and change colour. Little did I know it would give off loads off nitrogen oxide brown vapour. It just spread out across the table, staying at that height. I got the kids to stand back, and I don't think any of them breathed in loads directly. However, I've been scanning the internet for everything I can find about it, and it seems like it could be really harmful! I'm kind of freaking out, especially the descriptions about it going unnoticed for a while, because no one seems to have anyth…

The universe as we know wouldn't exist if it weren't for all the elements and compounds reacting with each other, trying to achieve a stable state. But why the hassle? How does it benefit them by attaining a stable state? Thanks in advance.
