Hello all! ? If urine were passed through a medium...a filter of some sort....would it produce filtered urine? would the urine still be conciderd urine? I want to find out if urine can be voided through a filter and cleaned of toxins or markers that could be used as information for a case of genetic discrimination against the person making pee pee in the cup.

I know that this occured a little while ago (like 2 years ago), but still, remote controlled humans are AWESOME! It works via Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation and it was developed in Japan. pretty much, you wear headphones and you can steer human being with a remote. Ideas for use involve video games to medical uses for restoring movement in limbs. Oh, and here's a experiment done a little while ago where they steered blindfolded humans remotely (Subscription is needed though): http://www.nature.com/news/2006/060807/full/news060807-3.html Here's a video on it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kf0E9llkZIU So, when do you think I'll have my very own remo…

I am currently conducting a series of experiments on common chemicals that act on the CNS. As part of my study I wish to test the effects of various agents on the growth of tumorous cells in plants. My question is two part. First, are there any recommendations for a plant species to use? The primarily criteria is that it is a chlorophyll producing plant and that it does not naturally produce any xanthines. The second part of the question is how to trigger tumorous growth in the plant? I would prefer to use a chemical agent for the trigger, but I suppose I could try irradiating or other methods, although that method may invalidate some of my findings. If you k…

In a few discussions here we have had the problem that intelligence is badly defined. Here's my definition: Intelligence is the ability to think of solutions to problems. By think of, I mean compute, model, etc rather than physically solve. An ability to solve only specific types of problems would be a specific subtype of intelligence. How do you define intelligence?

I have a few questions that relate to the whole topic of global warming/climate change theories. Please note that I am not looking for political answers, just scientific fact (that's why I'm here after all). Also I wasn't too sure where to post this thread (It is a chemistry question, but it involves climatology and biology as well). Currently the most widely accepted theory on global warming is that greenhouse gases (primarily CO2) are a major influence. Through biology we know that vegetation converts CO2 into O2. Is there any place on Earth where the CO2 concentration is higher, or where the stuff collects? Have there been any experiments or attempts to sy…

About now in the northern hemisphere, snow would be falling all over and getting disposed of. Could it be put to good use instead of thrown away? Ice has an enthalpy of fusion of 333 kJ/kg (the energy required to melt 1 kg of ice). This is about one hundredth the energy density of gasoline. Instead of throwing it out, could snow be gathered and used as an energy source? This would have the additional benefit of snowplows not throwing snow to the side, but would complicate the clearing of snow. Though the production of energy from snow would be very inefficient (a side effect of the small temperature difference between ice and room temperature), using ice as a power so…

Hello I'm thinking about creating an online group of undergrad biology/mathematics students to create projects in theoretical/mathematical biology (I'm not talking about statistics; stats are well established in biology). The fact is, there are so many opportunities to use mathematics in biology, sometime, even basic models have not been analysed. But most biologist have little training in maths, and they often make simple mistakes (the worst part; it gets published). It's not really better in mathematics departments; very few have researchers interested in biology. So, there are very few opportunities for undergrad student, at least in many universities, to d…

Okay, so I get the general idea of this theory: that equal volumes of gases have equal number of molecules. Now, I have to do a presentation in IPS, and I plan on doing a PowerPoint on it, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for something to go along with it ... an experiment, a model, or maybe some kind of demonstration. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks

  12. After reading up on solar energy extensively, it seems the major drawback is of course that is absorbs less than 20% of the sun's rays as energy, and the rest becomes heat. Why do we not see commonly (if at all?) simple mirrors or magification lenses placed on top of bodies of water (such as the ocean) and a chamber which traps all the heat? As the water moved into the chamber, the focused thermal energy would vaporize the water. To increase its efficieny further, the outside of the "chamber" would have a small outer chamber which would absorb radiating heat from inside and warm the water before it ever entered the middle, thus reducing the amount of energy insid…

  13. Hello. I was curious if there are any programs that can plot the terrain of a real landscape (such as person's room) with a camera and construct a simulation that resembles it. Preferably, a program I could download or buy and run on my own computer. Basically, it would just need to be something that could take the input from a camera and turn it into a model that can be tested with physics simulations, and things such as that. Thank you greatly in advance; I would have no idea where to start looking.

Say the Earth is on it's way for a magnetic reversal... Once it does, how weak will the magnetic field be? How long will it take for the reversal to be complete? During the middle of the reversal, would the magnetic poles spaz out? How would it affect life on Earth? Would it change the climate? How? Couldn't we be more prone to magnetic storms? I'm sorry for spelling errors, I suck at spelling. :x

Calculating the viscosity of a blended liquid consisting of two or more liquids having different viscosities is a three step procedure. The first step involves calculation of the Viscosity Blending Index (VBI) of each component of the blend using the following equation (known as a Refutas equation): (1) VBI = 14.534 × ln[ln(v + 0.8)] + 10.975 where v is the viscosity in centistokes and ln is the natural logarithm (Loge). The second step involves using this blending equation: (2) VBIBlend = [wA × VBIA] + [wB × VBIB] + ... + [wX × VBIX] where w is the weight fraction (i.e., % ÷ 100) of each component of the blend. In using the above blending equation, it…

Various governmental agencies involved with environmental protection and with occupational safety and health have promulgated regulations limiting the allowable concentrations of gaseous pollutants in the ambient air or in emissions to the ambient air. Such regulations involve a number of different expressions of concentration. Some express the allowable concentrations as volume of a specific gaseous pollutant per million volumes of ambient air or, more simply as parts per million by volume (ppmv). Others express the allowable concentrations as mass of a specific gaseous pollutant per volume of ambient air or usually as milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m³). The equation…

Hi I have placed a pdf book online that is about mirroring well known cyclic phenomena within nature. I believe it is a mapping of the mirror side, and potentially, people a lot cleverer than me may be able to incorporate this mirroring technique into other types of formulas. I am primarily a musician, with fairly limited mathematical skills! I have worked on this mirroring process for a good eighteen years now, mainly in spasms as and when the mood occurred. I haven't been able to find sources for a similar kind of work, but it is basically showing the mirror side to well known processes, like harmonics, Fibonacci numbers, musical scales, Phi ratio, Pi, prime nu…

Would you think such as being a juvenile version of a more to be large scale field of science in general in the future? Complex systems seems to derive already from the reality of various natural sciences, but I think without various biases such hold simply from axioms of choice. What I mean is any newcomer to any field of natural science is not taught at first to think really about what they are learning but rather just to learn it, and from that any real endeavors after that point seem to be instantly rejected if they do not follow along the same lines. For instance. Whatever natural laws of the universe that exists, they allowed for life to come into existenc…

  20. Interesting commentary on an effect of publishing novel results. I get the impression this is far more prevalent in certain biology and medicine experiments, where you are more likely to have many variables that can't be held strictly constant. http://www.marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2005/09/why_most_publis.html So (if I'm reading this right) a snippet in the paper about a small-sample study showing some novel effect is likely to be found to be wrong when a larger study is done later to confirm it; the false-positive study is more likely to get published than the small-sample study that correctly showed no effect. The claim that most findings are…

This is just a silly and I'm sure not very original idea of mine, so I didn't think I should dirty the astronomy board with it, but have you ever considered the potential of telescopes for future paleontology? Obviously this would require technology far beyond that which we posses now, but wouldn't it be possible to move a telescope out far enough into space so that the light reaching it from earth would have reflected off of it millions of years ago? If the telescope was then ridiculously powerful, could you not see individual animals on the surface from millions of years in the past? That would be profoundly nifty, don’t you think?

Can having the future of the environment for what that really means be left simply to the field of environmental science? Can all of the reality of the natural science and social sciences from biology, physics to law and psychology really be condensed into one field and have such people expected to be able to perform, or should such be a reality that humanity needs to embrace in its aggregate of interests and activities that such a field solely has to encompass?

  24. Sometimes science is straightforward - you can just measure data to support your case eg toss a coin and count it and you can show head/tails is roughly 50/50. Sometimes it is about having a theory that explains the data and slowly building on this case so that the scientific community accepts it as the most likely explanation. If your case it strong enough it almost becomes accepted as 'fact'. An example is evolution - the fossil record, mutations in genes and observation of microbial evolution all support it as the most likely explanation. However Creationists would say that God fits the same purpose, a single unifying theory that explains all the observatio…

I'm curious as to the primary fields of interest of some of our students and practicing scientists. So if you will, choose the option that best fits your major or specialty as a researcher. I've tried to be fairly comprehensive, but I realize that there might be a few more options in the life, social, and earth sciences as those are really what I know about.
