I've made my off-topic thoughts known on outside-the-box thinking recently in another thread. I'll let others chime in on what it means to them. I'll just start us off with this: the original reference, from what I can tell, was to an actual BOX, the 9-dot "box" puzzle where you're supposed to connect all the dots with just 4 straight lines, without lifting up your pencil (Sam Loyd's Cyclopedia of 5000 Tricks, Puzzles, and Conundrums, 1914). The only way to solve it is to draw your lines past the perimeter of dots, or "outside the box". It's a misdirection trick, we're fooled because we're thinking of the rules for normal connect-the-dots, but it makes us believe we d…

Hi there! I'm not really a scientist or anything, but my name is Robert Jimenez and I am currently a senior at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. I am writing a research paper on the topic of offshore oil drilling in the United States and more specifically on the Clean Ocean and Safe Tourism (COAST) Anti-Drilling Act, which was introduced this past year, and would prohibit the conduct of offshore drilling on the outer Continental Shelf in the Mid-Atlantic, South Atlantic, and North Atlantic planning areas. Part of my research paper assignment requires me to contact professionals/experts on my topic to get their opinions and or more information that they could poss…

Would it be wrong to assume that something infinite would contain everything? No? Similar to VSauce's explanation of the Library of Babel, and the theory that if the universe is infinite that there could be another you? Adding to that is this theory that if you were to have a digital canvas of infinite size and each pixel were a random color of the many 16,000,000 colors you could choose from. Eventually you would have a picture of everything piece of art ever painted; every picture ever taken, ever memory held onto; and scene from every point in time everywhere. I have tried to find articles or other claims to this but I could not find any, if you know of one pl…

I have to do this school project where I have to interview people, and I'm writing about nanotechnology and its ability to cure diseases. Please help by answering these questions Name- Age- What are your personal thoughts on nanotechnology? Do you think nanotechnology will have a big impact on the future? Do you think nanotechnology will cover up job or other human tasks? Do you trust nanotechnology for health concerns? How do you believe nanotechnology will branch out into different fields of work? Do you have any experience with nanotechnology? What do you find most interesting on nanotechnology?

Hey guys, I've researched this a little bit and found some conflicting data from my sources of internet browsing. So, what's the general consensus among the scienceforums.net community? Are female infants really born in slightly higher proportions than male infants? What about in natural conditions (i.e. not taking into consideration abortion of female infants in certain countries due to a cultural preference)? Thanks, Clara Tanone

Is Enterococcus the ONLY thing that grows on the selective EC agar plate? I'm doing my unknown in class and I had a little bit of growth on my EC plate but I know for sure it isn't Enterococcus because I turned that in for my first chance. I have one more chance. I'm so scared. Please help!

I'm asking this because I noticed that I have a slab of fat, right over where my belt rests. So could my belt block fat from traveling to my legs (the rest of my stomach is flat), or some other case. If this is the case, how could I fix this slab of fat? Try to burn it off or let it sit to see if it'll naturally spread out

Hello you all! Thermal images of pyramids, notably of Giza, show places of different inertia, suggesting something in the depth: stronger ariflow, other material, void... http://edition.cnn.com/2015/11/10/africa/egypt-giza-pyramids-thermal-anomalies/ apparently they used the day-to-night contrast and variation speed. My first suggestion would be (...if not already done!) to have a software reconstruct the matter profile as a function of the depth. To make simple, the quick reaction of a wall depends on shallow matter, the slower reaction on deeper matter. Software solves (to a limited extent) the "inverse problem", attributing more in detail matter to each depth…

I am just wondering , in a historical way how Newton came up with his gravitational formula. Was it just so simple a mathematical formula that he said to himself "let's give this a go" and "Oh it seems to work" or did he approach it in a logical way? I would find it interesting to know especially as he got it wrong . So , presumably any logic he followed (if he did) would have to have been faulty too. Was he able to measure parabolic trajectories and did that lead him to the formula for mutually attracting bodies?

I read that our Oort cloud could extend up to halfway to Proxima Centuri. Is it reasonable to assume that this star could also have its own equivalent of an Oort cloud and if so, could the two clouds merge at some point? If true this leads to my main question. Would it be possible to have a comet that had an orbit that included both suns? At least until stellar drift upset things anyway. I am not an astronomer and am not that proficient with orbital mechanics so apologies if these are stupid questions.

The official website of L&S Electric, lselectric.com, reports that Korean metallurgy has produced a lightweight variety of steel which rivals titanium alloy in its strength per kilogram. I am curious to find out more regarding this material, thanks in advance.

I have done research to see if homophobes are really closted homosexuals and I came across an article (or 5) that talks about a study done in 1999 in the University of Georgia. I posted a topic about that on yahoo answers (HUGE mistake). Heres a link, (you dont HAVE TO read it, but it will help with this). https://uk.answer.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20151021173043AAVHX20 There were so many loopholes in that study, but does it in some way prove latent homosexuality being linked to homophobia which is linked to homosexuality? Is the study reliable? Also if you did read it, can you answer any questions I may have asked please. So, has homophobia been linked to homosexuali…

Since the eternal blissful afterlife of no more suffering does not exist, then let us try to create an eternal blissful life through science in the future and resurrect suffering people such as me who have mostly missed out on life. I have every reason to think that this is possible. You are free to object to it. Therefore, post all your objections and we can then begin a discussion/debate on this. It is called: "Project Eternal Bliss" It is where scientists all around the world work on the ultimate science project to create an eternal blissful life and to resurrect people to live it. If I were a scientist, then this would be my life's work. Other people might…

I recently found a method to solve mental anguish, depression, and perhaps other mental conditions. Shout it out, to your friends, family, or at the risk of embarrassment, to the entire social media populace. Say everything that bothers you, deep in your mind, even about your spouse. Say it directly to the people your thoughts pertain to. Only the raw truth, no hold backs. Write novels, of your entire life story. Keep writing. You will notice a change after a while. The art leaves, The details get simpler. You tend to forget things. Its because its leaving you. Gone from memory. Then try deleting everything you wrote. Every bit. You wont rememb…

I know this is not exactly new, the article is from 2013 but it is amazing... http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/science-of-gay-marriage/158265/ The claim is that postgraduate student (he was at the time anyway) Chibuihem Amalaha has proved gay marriage wrong using physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology. In reality he as just embarrassed himself and the University of Lagos, Nigeria. Before I move onto one of of his 'arguments', one of his mathematical claims is... Oh dear, his mathematical skills are already very much in question. Anyway, his physics claim why gay is wrong... This is just so stupid. Now, I have read th…

Hello! I am a second year High School student from Brazil. Some weeks ago I came up with the idea of developing a system that could enable one to actively recall information. While making some research I came across some well known programs ( such as Anki) that uses the flash cards method. I personally do not work well with this method, so i discarded using it in my system. A couple of days after I found a very interesting graphic showing the forgetting curve by Ebbinghaus. This lead me to develop a "optimum interval" to refreshing information based on the Golden Ratio (1,6180...). And after crossing results with a personal research I have made on Memory I created a Excel…

As a patient of the Psychology business model for the last 4 years, I have some serious criticisms for the whole industry. I will first give you an outline of my experiences and then follow up with my criticisms. Psychology seems to be made up of two business models, the in-patient model and the out-patient model. The in-patient model: I have experienced two different locations, one was a not-for-profit hospital and the other was a for-profit mental health facility. Both locations had identical business models with one very subtle difference. I will go into the subtle difference last. At the beginning you filled out some forms and had an interview with a psychologist…

I'm curious of this because I'm not sure if it's density, hardness or some property. For example, why is tungsten sharper than titanium. I know it's all in the edge, but what makes the metals vary, when it comes to edges

The pension must be prohibited the way they are today. The pension model is socialist. The pension insurance is collecting in funds which invested the money in companies and the risk is distributed among all who paid this insurance. The people must not paid pension insurance but the money they receive they must to invest at their own risk.In this way public companies will be motivated to earn more profit. Not having such insurance people will be much interested where to invest their money whether In stocks, bonds or land to became a farmer after years. Now people with this pension system are irresponsible. They are so irresponsible so that they do not want to have even children…

I think this comes under the subject cognitive science but I guess it falls into neuroscience and philosophy as well... As I understand it, the Libet experiments seemed to show that people begin to do things before they have decided to do them. These experiments and others since have been debated hotly in terms of what they mean for free will. In essence, evidence for the brain initiating a voluntary movement of the hand before the conscious decision to do so rests with neurological tests that show that preparation for the movement ('Readiness Potential') is registered several tenths of a second before the conscious decision is made. Libet himself claimed that the…

Hi, I wonder what kind of project would be elegible for that prize. They write about "innovative products, which still may be in stage of implementation" so I´m not sure if you just have to send them a description of the idea or something else to show the product. May be photos or videos. Has anyone participated in the competition?
