What's going on in the world and how it relates to science.

Ok now that you've moved the focus to something that can now be reasonably discussed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship_in_the_United_Kingdom The Uk's struggle to integrate different cultural influences has meant such laws as "Racial and religious hatred act 2006" completely unnecessary and an example of kneejerk legislation. "The terrorism act 2000/2006" is an example of the government using fear to impose (unreasonable) controls at the behest of the public. The above laws could be seen as self imposed, driven largely by fear and a media in constant search of the sensational, in order to sell itself to the public. Fear is a large part of wh…

why aren't countries like the US and others creating any laws or incentives to limit the population of their countries? isn't it universally excepted that most problems are in the world are either caused or aggravated by population being too large? so why isn't anything being done to slow the growth?

  4. Due to an extremely clever viral video, your name gets written in on enough ballots to win the US presidency ( I know!). It was a total fluke, but now you're in and The People realize they know nothing about your plans for your administration (if you're ineligible for the US presidency, assume the same scenario but you're the Chief of Staff for the new president and are actually the "power behind the throne"). Congress is going to be very difficult for you to work with. However, you do have enough political capital (because of the way you were elected) to get three major goals accomplished in the four years you've got. These are serious goals, please. There may…

http://books.google....science&f=false Last night I listened to a philosophical OPB radio show about humanism, and it was said Hitler's Germany was focused on science. This was used as an argument that just science is not enough. However, this morning I googled for information and yes, the Germans were focused on science for technology, but Hitler opposed science and reason! I want to set the record straight. Nietzsche was very popular in Germany and had a strong influence on Germany. We might ask why he was so popular? He opposed religion and seemed to favor strong willed people taking what they want. It appears Hitler rode on Nietzsche's popularity…

I am very proud to be British and salute, with a tear in my eye, the achievements of the Great British Olympics team; well done. Let’s, as a national, revel in the success and reflected glory of these games. However, let’s not get used to it; this will NEVER happen again, why? Gone are the days of the plucky “brit” with a can do attitude and stiff upper lip, wins the day. No, today’s sport at Olympic level (the sports that count, of course) is a matter of finance. We all know, that by the time the next Olympics come around, we’ll, as a nation, be funding sports at probably the level of, let’s say, Greece and the RETURN of “gold medals” will be reflected.

Got this from a friend this morning and wondered if someone else may have seen it and might explain it better than I presently understand it. I listened but didn't read it entirely. Yes, it is biased, but how? Is it just a right wing ploy to bitch about something or Is it as inmaterial as some would make it out to be? I did go to snopes and this link seems to be the gist of it. http://www.snopes.com/politics/ballot/military.asp

I believe we have pretty much figured it out about Entrepreneurs, "Don't be one"! Now this virus of taxation has invaded the Olympics. So be cautious and don't win a medal what ever you do. That is, unless, you want to pay taxes on it. Is this for real? Isn't this the damndest thing you've ever heard of? A youth who has become very proficient over the years honing their skills and who is now qualifiesd for the Olympics, is required to pay taxes on the worth of the medals. Oh Yea! Government wants their cut regardless of who the hell paid those thosands of dollars going into that training. Your're right dude, 'they didn't do that on their own". Pony up!

This comes from a Wikipedia explanation of Higher Order Thinking Skills, and is about education for abstract thinking that opens a person mind and prepares a person for independent thinking. This Christian Republican stand against this education for independent thinking is also the strong Christian opposition to John Dewey. I am bringing him into this debate, so there is a better understanding of what the Republican stand is about. Here is an explanation of how John Dewey overcame Christian opposition, but he did not win the hearts of many Christians who absolutely hated him and the result of education for independent thinking. http://quidditycirce.wordpress.com/…

  12. Background on the munich massacre. 40 years later, IOC president, Jacque Rogge says this: Um.. what better time or place could there be to remember the murder of olympic athletes. I know anything to do with Israel is going to be politically controversial, and the IOC doesn't want to appear to be taking a stand. But to me the politics couldn't be more blatant... On the other hand, it could just be the IOC playing it safe and trying to avoid a similar situation during this year's olympic games.

  16. I may be running headlong into a brick wall with my head down and my thoughts in high gear, but as a concerned and conservative American, is this the way for a sitting president to approach his overall constituency? Some of the other videos are quite good and actually equate the inequality of some bigoted Americans. But is this the action of a president grasping at a self induced strawman? http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=BdjoHA5ocwU

  17. I am almost the opposite, I grew up in a culture of guns, but no formal training other than family members, the house had several shotguns, a couple of them loaded all the time. Yet we didn't lock our doors at night and the guns were never pulled out in anger that I ever saw. I asked my grandpa once why he didn't lock the doors, to be honest we were rather isolated, to get to the house required you cross the river on a boat or if the water was low a footlog, anyway he said that since everyone had guns and everyone knew it they wouldn't dare come in with out knocking. Several old hound dogs were his alarm system Now I have to admit those guns were often used and in a…

I realize it seems to be a biased spin on a troubling situation, but is it? At the end there is some great satire with Bill Maher and others. But actually, I was more interested in the bill. http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=HcBaSP31Be8&vg=medium

  19. Is it normal to allow victims to influence the charges that the district attorney will pursue? Why are the victims talking to a district attorney, other than for information about the incident, and in court for a testimony? I understand that a victim wants to get a criminal punished for what has been done, but isn't it dangerous to involve these (very emotional) victims in the determination of the official charges? And isn't it even impolite to involve them when they are still mourning, less than a week after the incident? I'm so confused because I read in the news that the district attorney is talking to the Batman shooting victims to determine which charges they …

  20. In a review of 26 independent studies from 2000 to 2005, researchers have found that chiropractic treatments for colic, asthma, allergies, dizziness, and period, back and neck pain have little to no benefit over conventional treatments. The researchers say that in all categories except for back pain, the studies found that chiropractic treatment was not effective at all, while with back pain, it is no better than a conventional treatment. Chiropractors, however, have dismissed the review as focusing on the negative studies, which the researchers deny. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4824594.stm

Hi: I believe every1 should get all their basic needs met regardless of how much money they have. Here are my basic needs: 1. Live as long as my genes program me to 2. Live with the least amount of discomfort [be it physical, psychological, tactile, olfactory, or gustatory] I'll give you an example of this "regulated Marxism": If a myopic patient needs eyeglasses, he/she get everything in the process free of charge [including the eye exam]. However, if the patient wants laser-eye surgery, he/she should have to pay for it with his/her own money. Why? Because a myopic patient can see properly if provided with eyeglasses. Laser-eye surgery is not necessa…

  23. Having a 24 year old grandson with a hearing impediment is crushing. Knowing that he was not allowed to graduate from High School because of his transcripts being lost, infuriated me. After some arm twisting and threatening gestures, miraculously they showed up. He is on the bottom rung of society today because of this malady. A few weeks ago my daughter, his aunt; took him to a lab and had tests done in this regard. $4,000.oo later and with proper hearing aids, this lad can hear very good. At present, he works 2 full time jobs that he would never have likely had without the aids. He wants to go to college if our family can somehow pull it off, without student loans. Do y…

  24. Talking politics is a ticklish subject under the best of conditions. To be engaged in them, even more challenging. This guy Allen West doesn't seem to come from a pampered background and has spent most of his adult life in the military. So, as a right wing leaning middle of the roader; this is the type of person I'd vote for, regardless of their political views.
