Politics

What's going on in the world and how it relates to science.

  1. Background on the munich massacre. 40 years later, IOC president, Jacque Rogge says this: Um.. what better time or place could there be to remember the murder of olympic athletes. I know anything to do with Israel is going to be politically controversial, and the IOC doesn't want to appear to be taking a stand. But to me the politics couldn't be more blatant... On the other hand, it could just be the IOC playing it safe and trying to avoid a similar situation during this year's olympic games.

My state government is spending 17 crores on rituals to gain the grace of rain gods at a time of severe drought across the state instead of spending the same lump sum on scientific measures in this 21st century and its going to spend more. http://www.ndtv.com/article/south/karnataka-temples-to-hold-prayers-for-rain-today-bill-will-be-17-crores-248142 When we are not even sure as to whether these gods exist or not how silly it is to release that much funds on these kind of rituals?

  5. I may be running headlong into a brick wall with my head down and my thoughts in high gear, but as a concerned and conservative American, is this the way for a sitting president to approach his overall constituency? Some of the other videos are quite good and actually equate the inequality of some bigoted Americans. But is this the action of a president grasping at a self induced strawman? http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=BdjoHA5ocwU

  6. I am almost the opposite, I grew up in a culture of guns, but no formal training other than family members, the house had several shotguns, a couple of them loaded all the time. Yet we didn't lock our doors at night and the guns were never pulled out in anger that I ever saw. I asked my grandpa once why he didn't lock the doors, to be honest we were rather isolated, to get to the house required you cross the river on a boat or if the water was low a footlog, anyway he said that since everyone had guns and everyone knew it they wouldn't dare come in with out knocking. Several old hound dogs were his alarm system Now I have to admit those guns were often used and in a…

Since I seem to stay confused on many issues as a conservative leaning right winger, would someone either from the left or right please explain this link to me. I realize it seems to be a biased spin on a troubling situation, but is it? At the end there is some great satire with Bill Maher and others. But actually, I was more interested in the bill. http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=HcBaSP31Be8&vg=medium

  8. Is it normal to allow victims to influence the charges that the district attorney will pursue? Why are the victims talking to a district attorney, other than for information about the incident, and in court for a testimony? I understand that a victim wants to get a criminal punished for what has been done, but isn't it dangerous to involve these (very emotional) victims in the determination of the official charges? And isn't it even impolite to involve them when they are still mourning, less than a week after the incident? I'm so confused because I read in the news that the district attorney is talking to the Batman shooting victims to determine which charges they …

  9. In a review of 26 independent studies from 2000 to 2005, researchers have found that chiropractic treatments for colic, asthma, allergies, dizziness, and period, back and neck pain have little to no benefit over conventional treatments. The researchers say that in all categories except for back pain, the studies found that chiropractic treatment was not effective at all, while with back pain, it is no better than a conventional treatment. Chiropractors, however, have dismissed the review as focusing on the negative studies, which the researchers deny. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4824594.stm

Hi: I believe every1 should get all their basic needs met regardless of how much money they have. Here are my basic needs: 1. Live as long as my genes program me to 2. Live with the least amount of discomfort [be it physical, psychological, tactile, olfactory, or gustatory] I'll give you an example of this "regulated Marxism": If a myopic patient needs eyeglasses, he/she get everything in the process free of charge [including the eye exam]. However, if the patient wants laser-eye surgery, he/she should have to pay for it with his/her own money. Why? Because a myopic patient can see properly if provided with eyeglasses. Laser-eye surgery is not necessa…

  12. Having a 24 year old grandson with a hearing impediment is crushing. Knowing that he was not allowed to graduate from High School because of his transcripts being lost, infuriated me. After some arm twisting and threatening gestures, miraculously they showed up. He is on the bottom rung of society today because of this malady. A few weeks ago my daughter, his aunt; took him to a lab and had tests done in this regard. $4,000.oo later and with proper hearing aids, this lad can hear very good. At present, he works 2 full time jobs that he would never have likely had without the aids. He wants to go to college if our family can somehow pull it off, without student loans. Do y…

  13. Talking politics is a ticklish subject under the best of conditions. To be engaged in them, even more challenging. This guy Allen West doesn't seem to come from a pampered background and has spent most of his adult life in the military. So, as a right wing leaning middle of the roader; this is the type of person I'd vote for, regardless of their political views.

"the important thing is not left or right, there is no left or right, only up or down. up, toward the wings of freedom, or down, toward the ant hill of totalitarianism." - ronald reagan i tend to agree. here's what has been viewed as the political spectrum. i personally consider myself fairly close to the anarchist position. i often find myself critisizing government action. here's 20 questions to help you deside where you are; for each question, answer 2) strongly agree 1) slightly agree 0) niether -1) slightly disagree -2) strongly disagree and give you self the point value accordingly. #1 private business has the right to discriminate against workers for an…

One of the more annoying things about being liberal is even on the left it's a pretty wide brush, and I'm pretty sure if you call yourself liberal there's a whole swath of the wing you just try to tune out as benign fruitcakes - I know I do. Some liberal policies have really been irritating me lately though, so I feel like venting: Green policies that aren't green yet limit choice: I wonderfully discovered we don't allow plastic bags at groceries anymore, and have to pay for paper ones. I have never once thrown out a plastic grocery bag unless it was destroyed or hopelessly dirty. I'm not especially green, but I reuse every single one for garbage cans and to…

A little atoll, Makin Island; but a piece of history in the Pacific that we should never forget. The first is a documentary. The second, a movie made in the later forties or early fifties. When remembering such things as this have slipped from our minds, it's only a matter of time 'til we internally destroy ourselves. http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=C6f_FvZpm3g http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMBPsb6Euu4

I'm not saying the government is trying to control money for themselves and are out to get us. I get highly annoyed by people thinking things like this, so please go somewhere else with that crap. If you think our government has no corruption in it, please let me hear your argument.

I just read in the news today that the Canadian government has decided to stop funding the experimental lakes. In case you didn't know, these lakes have been used since the 1960s to study ecosystem-scale questions. Groundbreaking research has been performed here and is still being performed, including studies on the effect of acid rain, eutrophication caused by pollution (research from this project was used to successfully remove phosphorus from detergents), and studies on endocrine disrupters, to name a few. And what's the government spending its money on instead? Oh, new fighter jets. It's just another example of the anti-science/anti-data shenanigans of the Conse…

  22. A video in which Webster Tarpley exposes the "Elite's plan for Global Extermination". In particular he criticizes John P. Holdren (science advisor under Obama) for having genocidal politics. My take on this: I think this is a very good exposition on the malthusian political ideas in general, and what is wrong with it. As he sets out, there is no "population bomb" since in many parts of the world, the population is declining (but on the other hand, africa, latin america and india and other countries are still growing fastly, but that growth will decline too some later time). The problem is not that there are "too many people" but that there is "underproduction" ie…

  25. Here in Australia we're seeing increasing support for the legalisation of gay/lesbian marriages. I believe one day it will be legalised world wide. But if it does so too would polygamous marriages and perhaps even other forms of marriages between different peoples (as the only thing stopping it now is our Christian roots). My question, even though polygamous marriages have a bad reputation in the developing world (particularly Islamic countries), could it serve a useful purpose in the future (e.g. political ones - to strengthen relationships between different countries) or serve as a better lifestyle choice for certain kinds of people (i.e. consensing adults) in the …
