Science Education

Colleges, grad programs, MCAT, GRE, courses, and other aspects of scientific education.

  1. I'm 25 years old and starting back to college. I completely goofed off during pretty much all of my school years. From grade school on up until high school graduation, I barely squeaked by with everything and neglected my education. I always struggled with math especially because it intimidated me and caused me to distance myself from it. I decided to go to college at the last minute after high school and only got into a very non-selective school by the skin of my teeth. I spent three years there and never progressed towards a degree. I just never applied myself. I left college when I was 21. Long story short, I went through a drastic, 180-degree change in my attitude…

So, I am in my first year at my college. In our honors program, we have an opportunity for second semester freshman to get into research their first year. I found a professor who agreed to meet with me, but I'm not sure what to start the conversation about and so on. First, I'm trying to get lab research, but this program is open to all research. If he's not interested in lab research, then I'd rather take my chances applying as a volunteer with other professors working their own lab research. How should I bring that up to him? I know lab research would be a draw on his time, and I'm not sure who to bring it up to him without sounding like I'm being arrogant and entit…

  5. Hello everyone, my name is Manuel. I just created an account on this forum because of my great interest in Physics. I'm actually going to join a special physics program at my school soon, however, there is a slight issue: You need to own a TI84 scientific calculator. It's almost impossible to buy this calculator without going into debt for me. That's why I've created a fundraiser: https://fundrazr.com/a1Cpmf?ref=ab_66RpP7 You can find more information about my scenario there. If any of you would find it in your hearth to help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. Kind regards, Manuel Ahumada

Hello, I've just registered here, although I have been reading this forum for a while. I find myself currently in the "what-to-do-with-my-life" crisis. I really can't think of any options. I'm finishing 3rd semester of biotechnology now in university in Poland and I feel like it's all going into nowhere - I'm basically just expanding my high school knowledge about science. I keep learning loads of theoretical stuff, basically all that I had in high-school with just a "bit" more from every subject, there is no much laboratory practical works and I feel like I keep studying, studying just to pass another test/exam then forget it, take a weekend break and over and over …

  8. I'm 21 years old and want to go back to school for biology. I'm nervous because even though I'm not much older, I have some anxiety about going back to school. I did a year of college after high school but due to some things in life happening( deaths in the family, and a baby)so I stopped attending. I was just wondering what are some tips, advice, and somethings I can expect?

As I am signing up for classes and reading up on potential jobs for applied math, I can't help but be bothered by the idea that maybe I should be taking things like Calculus Based Physics classes or Principles of Chemistry 1 + 2 (the chem classes directly before organic chem), or General Biology Cell to Organism and Oganism to Ecosphere (which are the two biology classes that break into all the 200 bios). I did fit in Micro/Macroeconomics, but they fulfilled degree requirements. As applied math people use math in their work in non math fields, should I have basic education in these fields, or is it assumed that I am just the math guy and it will be the physicist, chemis…

In the past students who have studied science (like I wish) have donc College Courses, or experimental work in Antarctica, or even studied medecine in Argentina. I want to use this money to do science for example if doing paleontology a course or a go to a dig. If physics mabye having forst hand lab work or a course. DO you have SEVERAL ideas for me, links, or things I could do? Thank you very much, P.S: If needed I can pitch in some extra money

I have heard it said that the only real science classes are biology classes. The rest is just math. If this is true I don't think I am very interested in science, but math I do enjoy. I am going to be taking classes in a community college starting next semester, Spring 2017. One of the requirements for the degree I will be pursuing is that I take a Life Science class, which includes all this yucky biology stuff. Ultimately I will want to be steering toward Applied Math and get a math related non-teaching job. Is there anything in biology that might be useful for that, or is it my fate to take a class that is almost as unrelated to my goals as is rock and roll histor…

  15. It is one of my passions and dreams that a modern society has enough Science education, numeracy and literacy to be able to comment on, and vote on, serious scientific issues. However, in my opinion, we need to update the Science curriculum for the people that lead us so that they are able to make rational and sensible decisions on the new changes and discoveries in science which are taking place at a blinding pace. In short, do we need to send our politicians and legislators back to school to learn new Science?

Hey everyone! I was reading a lot of special interest articles in newspapers and science magazines when i was in university, but somehow after my graduation and the mass of work and stress that came with the working life i kind of gave up with that. Now i am not a real insider anymore. Can anybody give me a quick update what you guys read and recommend, and even more important, why you are reading it and what the main focuses are. I am looking forward to your answers!

  18. Hey! In my school, in Grade 10 we get a course called 'Science 10'. It's basically having a taste of biology, chemistry and physics. Then the next year we can go into Bio 20, Chem 20 or Physics 20, then later to the 30 levels. My question is, what is suggested I go into? I have an interest in forensic science and might possibly get a career in it for the future. Which one of these classes will benefit me the most? Thank you!

For the past few years I have wanted to pursue a scientific education, specifically in neuroscience. But I know that there are immense problems that I currently face (and will face) in pursuing this goal. The first problem is my terrible academic past. I barely passed high school. After high school, I went to a small, local, four-year university where I failed out. I got placed on academic suspension because I spent three years there, failed everything, and never made it beyond freshman status. I spent four years in the workforce before I concluded that i wanted education, and decided to go back to college. Actually, I had acquired the desire to pursue a science educ…

  20. Hello. I am currently a sophomore in high school. Given my interests and personality, I've decided on becoming a scientist. However, there is a dilemma in this: what branch should I go into? Hello folks, I was hoping I could get some advice on the best degree selection for working with micro and macro algae cultivation and utilization. I am interested in all of their uses, but especially bioenergy and biofuels, as well as bioplastics and fertilizers. Here is the supply chain that I am imagining: open ocean seaweed production > biorefinery > energy, fuel, fertilizer > co2 emissions used in algae production > back to biorefinery > bioplastics This is not the most ideal medium to elaborate these ideas, but I hope you can get the picture. Basically, my overall goal is to create systems of manufacturing that can sequester carbon and provide lo…

Hi, I'm a highschool student who is going to complete his IGCSE this year. I'm interested in studying wildlife and I aspire to be a park ranger or a naturalist. I enjoy ecology, conservation and the outdoors and I want to specialise in them. However, I am unsure on what to study for my tetiary education. The universities and colleges I have surveyed do not have a course on ecology or wildlife science (most of the time it's medical) At most that they have is general biology, environmental management/science, zoology and aquatic science. Is it the case that I have to go through one of these courses to study ecology and conservation? Or do I have to search for …

Hi! I'm new the aspect of university and my future in almost every possible sense, as I'm going into my First year in Electrical Engineering. Throughout my life I have always held a love and fascination for space and the universe and only recently discovered astrophysics as a possible career choice; however, as I previously stated, I am already going into Electrical Engineering. Since both subjects (Astrophysics and Engineering) carry an immense reliance on physics i wasn't sure if I should rethink my schooling and opt for a degree in Physics then proceed Astrophysics, or keep my degree in Electrical Engineering as a sort of safety net and area for experience and use…

How well do you know the contributions of these famous female scientist: Marie Curie (1867-1934) Lisa Mietner (1878-1968) Barbara McClintock (1902-1992) Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958) Jane Goodall (1934-Present) Well, if you don't, here's a Life Noggin YouTube video I recently discovered recounting some of their contributions. I knew a great deal about Madame Curie and Jane Goodall, but not so much about the other three extraordinary women. Enjoy!
