Ophiolite's comment in the "pointless fun" thread got me thinking. How often do we rate the reliability of a witness by what we believe? Without worrying about the existance or not of things, an experiment. You are now a Police Officer interviewing a witness about a robbery. The witness tells you that the offender was 190 cm tall, dark hair, pale complexion, etc., in fact the whole box and dice. You'd be thinking something like "A good observer, accurate and concise." You would have no doubt (or very little) that the person saw what they said they saw. And you would go looking for the man who fits the description. This would be a major prosecution point the …

I am a non-smoker who cant understand why people willingly inhale smoke? Alcohol I can see in moderation cause it does no serious harm if not abused, but how can even 1 cigarette be anything but bad? From what studies show it is a addictive toxic drug (nicotine) and can kill if enough get in your body. I even read that smoking has a negetive effect on your genes inside your organs not letting them grow and heal properly and it simply is a quicker way to die and bad health. I know some people smoke and say its their right but it is the provider (tobaco comany) that is at fault, they are responsible for countless early deaths and the only punishment they get is some of thei…

We are having a disagreement about the fact I maintain that in an electrically heated home, during the winter months you may as well leave lights on if you want to because the energy from the lights will contribute to the total heat of the room the same as electrical resistive heaters. Ie, if a vessel (home/room) would need say 2000 w of elect heaters on to maintain 70 degrees. I say you would get the same amt of heat from 10- 200 watt bulbs,.or a hundred 20 watt florescent ones,.. 4-500w clothes irons or a 2000W motor. My partner says that in the case of the bulbs that the light energy is lost but I will guess that and light (or more infrared emissions) hit objects in th…

It's windy today and I noticed that the water level in the toilet is lower than normal. I've also noticed on other days that the level fluctuates along with the sound of the wind outside. None of the other faucets and such seem to be affected. My guess is that as the wind blows over the drains all along the street a small vacuum/sucking effect is created. Anyone know the real answer or have other ideas?

Do u think the quatrains he wrote were accurate predictions of the future or just us wanting to believe in something more, have we actualy read the coded word properly? I dont know, from what I gather he was a remarkable human with abilities beyond what I understand to be human. if he did predict the future how and why? There is also the possibility that we fabricated the quatrains to read how we want them to like most other spiritual matters we try to interpret. What is your thoughts?

Science Fourms, I am sixteen years old (as of October 7th) and soon will be eighteen in a few years. I think it's time for me to start planning ahead. In case you didn't know I live in the United States in a state called Kansas. Kansas is located in the middle of the 48 States (not including Alaska and Hawaii). There is nothing to do here. It is more of a farming community. The only things to do in my town are -Visit the county museum. -Visit the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center. -Visit the Underground Salt Museum -Movies and that is about it. I would like to live in a town that has more things to do in your spare time and has a great school in the town…

I wanted to share this wonderful resource with you all. If any of you take pictures with your digital camera or scan them in using a scanner then you have to check out http://www.imagestation.com. This site, by Sony, allows you to upload your images free of charge and store them there. You can then share them with your freinds, edit them or have them printed for a very very small fee. In my account I currently have 427Mb (1889 images) worth of images.

I seen a news clip a few times on a woman who sold a grilled cheese with a image of the virgin mary on it ? I personaly do not believe this to be true only because people go to great lengths to make hoaxes and if religious figures are appearing in toast it is beyond my comprehension why lol . I also note that the item was sold for 28k and that just dosent seem very religious to me but i am not religious so I wouldnt know lol. What u do u all think ?

There's a reason why I like this forum. However, since I work nights and usually this place gets pretty quiet, I need to find other things to do. I decided to give a closer look to the sciforums and came up on this thread. http://sciforums.com/showthread.php?t=37555 The majority of it is well, ludicrous.
