Check out digg.com; thousands and thousands of users were upset today (~50,000 diggs between all the posts) after digg deleted a story (the most popular story ever) and banned a user over the HD-DVD key being posted. The membership flipped out and everyone started submitting stories with the key included -- and now the first four or five pages are filled with the stories over there. Apparently digg received a cease and desist letter and complied. Now they've reversed their position saying they will do what the users want even if it means they have to get shut down. Even slashdot has joined the madness, posting the key as one of the "tags" to their stories. Interesting…

Maybe I'm living up to my name and being a bit slow here...I've tried searching this as well, so sorry if I've missed something, but I noticed a little 'scales' icon next to the 'report post' icon. Apparently I have 10 reputation points...though I don't have the foggiest idea what that means ?

The Rise & Fall of Gravity Copyright by K. B. Robertson 1979 - 2007 All rights reserved. A light sided approach to the ponderous subject of General Relativity. Space-time Gravity Is The 4th Dimension: For more cost free rhythm and reason, please consider a season that resonantly sings beyond theories of strings. From Euclid's straight line shine to Isaac's golden apple and its geodesic grapple. A catchy little tune that most anyone can croon, by the curved silvery light of Albert's expeditionary moon. Dr. Einstein's waking inspiration may yet sweep the sleeping nation at the slightest provocation. An unrecognized solution that co…

From mcsweeneys.com 0. Newtonian gravity is your high-school girlfriend. As your first encounter with physics, she's amazing. You will never forget Newtonian gravity, even if you're not in touch very much anymore. 1. Electrodynamics is your college girlfriend. Pretty complex, you probably won't date long enough to really understand her. 2. Special relativity is the girl you meet at the dorm party while you're dating electrodynamics. You make out. It's not really cheating because it's not like you call her back. But you have a sneaking suspicion she knows electrodynamics and told her everything. 3. Quantum mechanics is the girl you meet at the poetry readin…

I got sent a .jpg in an email recently and thought I'd check it. Go to http://maps.google.com/ In the "Get directions" area, type in "Atlanta" to "Paris, France". Once you have your map and directions, scroll down to Step 22. I love a good sense of humour.

Imagine what a community that was solely devoted to the progress of science, like the Vatican but for science. No laws other than the ones that people in Science City (vote?) on. What kind of laws should be implemented? A Spartan survival of the fittest, or should it be moral and take ethics into account. Would it turn into an evil sadistic world? Would Science City build an army, should they? How about people that would not join this city, are they a threat? Comments? I am all for a Science City that was harsh barren and cold, deviod of all human touch. As long as we had the arts I wouldn't mind, Enough human touch for me. Keep the soft sciences as well, they ar…

Every good doctor is also a biologist. Every good biologist is also a chemist. Every good chemist is also a physicist. Every good physicist is also a mathematician. Every revolutionary scientist is also a revolutionary philosopher. (These are fairly tongue-in-cheek, so don't jump down my throat. Thanks.)

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow Between the crosses row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. Lt. Col. John McCrae When I was a young man I carried me pack And I lived the free life of the rover From the Murray's green basin t…

The official report on global warming was announced today. Scientists made a formal statement saying that global warming is real, it is escalating at a dangerously fast rate and will make life unbearable within a few decades, and it is due to human emissions of CO2.

This may seems like a very belated question, and I've searched everywhere (perhaps not hard enough) but I wanted to start adding people to my buddy list, though I have no idea what the point of the buddy list is, so I guess that sounds kinda daft, but anyway...does it inform me when a 'buddy' has made a post, or is it just for novelty value ?
