  1. I just bought the book "The Age of Fable" by Thomas Bulfinch, and I was wondering could the book (which was written in 1855) be inaccurate on, or is there a more updated modern version.

  4. Statistically speaking if nothing else, who is more likely to generate the most dangerous men on earth? Or, creative scenario, if I had to choose one person to go on a mission you only see in the movies or video games, where would I be looking? SEALs? Green Berets? Black Ops Agents? Some foreign hardcore special forces unit I haven't heard of? Boxing Federation? Ultimate Fighting Championship? Kung-fu temple in china?

For the cyclists amongst us, what's your ride? Mine's a Schwinn Le Tour. Umm, what is there to say about it... it has a giant 63cm frame, which means with the seat post entirely down it fits me quite well. It's a speedy roadie and does a great job getting me around town. I've been bouncing around the idea of doing a single speed modification on it, as my daily commute is virtually flat, but considering that Boulder is somewhat hilly (being nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains) I've been somewhat reluctant.

And guess what, no bombs required: http://blog.wired.com/wiredscience/2007/06/purdue_research.html You can view the animation here: http://www.cs.purdue.edu/cgvlab/papers/popescu/popescuWTCVIS07.mov The question is... will this change anything regarding the doubts of 9/11 conspiracy theorists regarding the collapse of the twin towers?

This isn't really a new observation, but I witnessed this odd behaviour a few days ago on the way back from work...and I'm a little puzzled. I've noticed that some people when crossing a road, and they've narrowly avoided an oncoming car, that they giggle like idiots. So this I guess is just a reaction of relief, 'wow, that was close.' However, I can't recall seeing the same behaviour with other near accident / death situations i.e the immediate reaction is to giggle. I'm probably wrong, I've only witnessed a few close calls (in real life) that would warrant a 'holy crap, I could of died then' but there was certainly no giggling involved. 'Oh, that car nearly…

  8. ...and I don't want to throw them away, without measuring I'd say I've got more than five meters of the stuff in two pieces. Its old and probably not very good and I could get a brand new cable of that length for a few quid, but still, it feels wrong to just throw it away. I was thinking that maybe I could use it for Science, but I'm not sure how. This might be my inspiration for starting a radio signal related project (although the component that I already have is by far the cheapest out of what I'd need for something like that), any ideas? Any coaxial cable related experiments that can be done cheaply?

OK, here's the deal: You've just won the grand prize in a contest, a robot that will take over one set of household chores and perform them flawlessly. When the robot is not performing it's duty it hides away and takes up no space. The robot will function at no cost to you for the rest of your life. You have to choose what set of chores the robot will take over. The choices are very strict since the robot needs to be designed specifically for a limited skillset. The choices are: Gardener: Maintains your current exterior landscaping, including lawnmowing, watering, weeding, fertilizing and trimming. Will maintain your vegetable garden but won't harvest. Bags …

Hey, boredom kicks in and thus a thread is born... Ok so here's the problem. The general idea most people have is that if there is this ever-loving god then no matter what I do I will be with him if he is real when I die. I mean, how could a God that loves us so and is all-powerful let us suffer in hell. Well this is where it gets tricky. Buddism has no God. Hinduism has Millions and Christianity has 1 god who is in the form of the holy trinity (father, son, holy spirit). How can believing in No God get you to a single God and how can millions of gods get you to one God. Now this is not a debate about who's religion is correct so don't critisize me about it. I am open…

I guess this may be considered a minor issue but I decided to post it anyway. The other day, me and my 2 of my flatmates were looking in our fridge when we noticed one of our other flatmates had left some chocolate cornflakes in their(my other 2 flatmates draw). They decided to take one each, and just pretend that if someone asked they would say they thought it was each other's. In the process I decided I would have a piece too, justifying myself by thinking that I didn't take it out of the fridge, and I was having what was already taken. it was delicious btw:-) . However, I am also pretty much incapable of lying, as I cannot do it(in the long run I guess its a good t…

  16. Not sure where to put this, so I'd thought I would put this here. In about 10 days I'm going to present to a Teacher's Workshop about Asperger's Syndrome and Autism. I'm organizing this with my case manager at the school, but I am largely hosting it. Since this is a science site, I was wondering if you could help me out by giving me any up to date research or suggestions, etc. Thanks!

To kick a minority? While reading the smoking thread I realised that the major anti arguments boiled down to 6 points about smokers; 1. They are dirty. 2. They smell bad. (different) 3. They are diseased. 4. If you hang around them, you will get sick. 5. They are obviously less intelligent than normal folk. 6. Their behaviour should be modified by force (if need be) so they don't "Pose a Danger" to the rest of society. It seemed to me I'd heard these arguments before. Pick any maligned minority from history and you find the exact same comments. They were once used to describe "Blacks" and "Curry Munchers", even to justify apartheit, now it's smokers. …

Tick tock...tick tock...Have you ever thought what happens at 5 PM everyday? If you were in space, listening to the earth with a giant stethoscope, you could hear approximately one third of the men and women who are in the same time zone, push back their chairs as they finish work for the day. The discerning diaphragm might also pick up the familiar sound of MS Windows shutting down, the keys turning in their mortice as the doors are locked for the final time. The spying eye high in space would suddenly see an entire longitude plunge into darkness as the office lights are turned off. The stethoscope would pick up the cheery babble of people as they said …

I'm planning on setting up a 'bad scientific journalism' website...I'll try and think of a catchier name than that. The idea is to post an article from a mainstream source such as the BBC, and sift the facts from the crap. I'll then forward the contributions to the guilty party, and hopefully they'll issue a statement on the errors in said article. I'll obviously need some experts involved et.c but do you think it's a good idea...is such a thing needed, or are there already plenty of action groups that deal with this. Any ideas or input to my project would be very much appreciated.

Why do we always talk about colonizing Mars? Why not Venus? Mars is a little dirtball of a planet with bugger all atmosphere (except at Jullagg's Bar on a Saturday night ). What it does have is 98% CO2. It has low gravity and no water to boot, generally a nothing planet. Venus OTOH has a good thick atmosphere, is a better size and there seems to be a lot of water in the clouds. Yes, it's harder to get to, is bloody hot and has phenomenal storms due to the runaway greenhouse effect. But I've always wondered what would happen if we dumped 100 tons or so of nice photosynthetic bacteria into the atmosphere and waited. The CO2 gets converted, the greenhouse breaks…
