Speculations Forum Rules

The Speculations forum is provided for those who like to hypothesize new ideas in science. To enrich our discussions above the level of Wild Ass Guesswork (WAG) and give as much meaning as possible to such speculations, we do have some special rules to follow:

  1. Speculations must be backed up by evidence or some sort of proof. If your speculation is untestable, or you don't give us evidence (or a prediction that is testable), your thread will be moved to the Trash Can. If you expect any scientific input, you need to provide a case that science can measure.
  2. Be civil. As wrong as someone might be, there is no reason to insult them, and there's no reason to get angry if someone points out the flaws in your theory, either.
  3. Keep it in the Speculations forum. Don't try to use your pet theory to answer questions in the mainstream science forums, and don't hijack other threads to advertise your new theory.

The movement of a thread into (or out of) Speculations is ultimately at the discretion of moderators, and will be determined on a case by case basis.

Assumptions are what drive modern Mainstream science. Not all assumptions need be false, but invariably some will be. We know that within the boundaries of the observable universe, everything pretty much acts according to laws that a certain species of primates on a little blue ball has marveled at figuring out. But what compels us to believe this MUST be true elsewhere? I grant that without being able to observe anything else, it's all we have. However, if I had been born in a prison cell and been fed beans and rice all my life by an unknown prison keeper,, I might believe that beans and rice were the only available foods, that I and my prisoner were the only p…

  2. Good argument. Yeah, I prefer to keep this debate scientific. I was just saying that I am open minded towards scientific explanations of any natural/observed phenomena, even though I am religious. It may seem contradictory I know... On a side note, I just discovered this website by chance, today. And I have to say this is great. The fact that it is free to join and that the moderators such as yourself try to keep it as clean and scientific as possible. Well done. No ads either, I wonder how you guys keep it running... One more thought, maybe the "Magical Creation Story" that we read in books of religion is some kind of dumbed-down long-story-short version for wh…

My calculation for the Higgs boson mass for the Standard Model. The Higgs boson mass is equal to one-half the Higgs vacuum expectation value. Higgs boson mass: [math]m_H = \frac{v_h}{2} = \frac{1}{2} \sqrt{\frac{(\hbar c)^3}{\sqrt{2} G_F}} = 123.111 \; \frac{\text{Gev}}{\text{c}^2}[/math] [math]\boxed{m_H = \frac{1}{2} \sqrt{\frac{(\hbar c)^3}{\sqrt{2} G_F}}}[/math] CERN Higgs boson mass: [math]m_H = 125.3 \pm 0.6 \; \frac{\text{Gev}}{\text{c}^2}[/math] Which implies that the Higgs boson achieves mass from the Higgs field vacuum via the Higgs mechanism. The universe is expanding, all masses flying apart, accelerating. As spots drawn on an inflating balloon. Or a stretched rubber band. Galaxies collide...... Hmmm. How do galaxies violate the first observation?

  5. If F= mass * acceleration then, when you drop the same ball from different hight, it has SAME Acceleration. We know that, the same ball dropped from different height will make different DENT. Therefore we observe that, the higher the distance from which the ball is dropped, the bigger Force it will exert. The Acceleration of the ball doesn't change with the height of the drop. It's the SAME 9.8 m/s^2 regardless of the height of the drop. However, its the velocity changed. Therefore Equation for Force IS F=m * V In Newtons equation, the Acceleration is redundant and can be cancelled entirely according to principles of mat…

Has anybody else ever come up with an alternative to quark theory? According to my theory of everything; all particles with rest mass, must be made from a mixture of positive and negative charges, except electrons which are made from a single negative charge, and positrons which are made of single positive charges. For instance we might assume that a proton is composed of 1000 negative charges and 1001 positive charges, all solidly packed together. The charge of the proton can be attributed to the fact that it has one extra positive charge, whilst the mass can be explained by the large number of charges present. The advantage of my theory is that just about e…

First of all, I am an amateur. I'm also not here to argue or debate this simple idea that may easily be dismissed with mathematics or a fundamental law. So if you are closed minded to thought experiments that require a certain amount of speculation and imagination, this won't be for you. However, if a mathematical equation or fundamental law easily and obviously negates this idea, I welcome it. I read and devour cosmological physics ideas from a variety of sources. Recently I was watching a documentary that poked into several topics...the "arrow of time" concept, entropy, matter and antimatter, and dark matter/energy. The program touched upon a female astrophysicists …

  8. If there's a giant meteor, here's what you should do: Not nuke it. There is no air in space, so there is nothing to carry a powerful directed shockwave, a nuclear weapon would simply be a burst of high energy radiation and enough of them at once may partially strip away the ozone or more. Instead, develop a very powerful fragmentation bomb, a bomb that will generate shrapnel powerful tear through the meteor and break it into tinier pieces. It will likely take more than one, and there will very likely still be some big chunks left-over, but the many smaller pieces will burn up in the atmosphere and not cause so much damage upon impact. However, it doesn't stop here. All…

'Main stream science' is required to be accepted without question at an academic institution. Contrary to popular belief though, a theory is always speculative, with no right to call itself otherwise than any equally viable alternative. We can never prove a theory. We can only disprove, or improve by refinement, when further evidence comes to light. We can never know, like the detective, that further evidence may contradict the theory we presently favour. It is an abuse of 'reason' to claim an alternative theory as proof against another. Only direct evidence can do this, and evidence which is not derived on the basis of contrary theories and supportive hypotheses. Premis…

  11. Movement of the Solar system in the Galaxy is circular movement. The movement is described by gravity and centrifugal force. But, much neutrino is created in the center-side of the Galaxy. And, our Sun emits much neutrino in nuclear fusion reaction. So, the produced neutrinos from the Sun encounters other neutrinos comes from the center-side of the Galaxy. Neutrinos are WIMP particles. But this radiation pressure gives small effects to the centrifugal force of the Sun in the Galaxy?

"Today most astronomers and physicists believe that this is the right answer to the puzzle. There is missing matter, which is actually there but which we don't see. This mysterious missing matter is referred to as the dark matter. The dark-matter hypothesis is preferred mostly because the only other possibility --- tha…

Hello Everybody, I would start by asking a simpe question, Is our Physics wrong? if So, then the whole of science is wrong too? Does any one of you think the same, then please share your views? I seriously believe that we have missed something very crucial in our understanding of nature, and its in particular related to our study of energy which is incomplete according to me. Our current science is built on the foundations of classical physics. Is it going to crumble any time soon? There are many inconsistencies and anomalies in current physics. I have discovered it myself. Has any one of you discovered the same, if so, kindly advise. To give you a simple idea, I…

I thought that science was all about religion. ~99% of people wish that physics could be understood ~1% of people believe that expressing their suspicions and risking looking like a fool is worth it if it inspires somebody. Educated individuals don`t seem to believe that they can risk doing so-which is a pity really because then we`re stuck. I would like to believe that there was chronic 'Not being able to see the wood for the trees' syndrome in the academic community and that one revelation would make everything simple, predictable and understandable again- but that is a belief- probably one shared by a lot of people. I would like to believe that a theory wil…

  15. Even if alien life did exist in other galaxies, because information about these galaxies takes thousands of light years to reach us, even if there are other civilizations as advanced as we are, it would be thousands of years before we could see the evolution of their underwater life. In fact, the universe could be populated with intelligent life in every galaxy, sending out radio signals, but by the time we get them our sun will have undergone a super-nova.

I created a website for a new theory on the Big Bang. I would like to know what you think of this theory. It's just a theory, no proof. The heart of my theory is this: the force between two particles is inversely propotional to the distance between them. As the distance between two of the smallest particle in the universe becomes increasingly small the force becomes increasingly large and will tend to approach infinity. This is the first step of a series of steps that could have caused the big bang. The information of this first step comes from a BBC documentary (link and clear instructions of where to look included on the mentioned website). The rest of the theory is…

"moment of inertia is a static for an axis and for a rigid body. magnetism is a construction of charge, not a special force or component. newton's laws are valid only for perfect (high) transmission. the faradian force (motor) couples charge and mass. the critical angle is a result of atomic orientation. there is no such thing as relativity. the solar spectrum is not a god given distribution. it is most likely cumulative radia…

  19. About 10 years ago, I came up with a theory that got rejected from every theoretical physics journal that exists, and I got shrugged off from every Theoretical Physics professor that I could contact. Nobody has every agreed to even hear the theory. So I recently posted a description of it on YouTube. Maybe someone can look at it and tell me why people are so against hearing new theories. Part 1. http://www.youtube.c...h?v=997N_QRUCG4 Please start the video at 6:40 minutes, that way you can skip the clumsy introduction and me just getting my bearings straight. Part 2 answers a few questions that I got so far from my Father. http://www.youtube.c...h?v=…

I posted this in the physics section, but it probably fits here better. I would like to post a few questions and offer a thought experiment or two. I do not have a background in these fields, but I enjoy reading and watching science shows. First, there is widespread agreement on the Big Bang Theory and the age of the universe The age of the universe is largely based upon the residual microwave radiation that is thought to be the oldest observable portion of our universe. We are surrounded by this radiation and it is the same in all directions. First question. In some respects, that seems to put us at the center of the universe. We can see the same distance…

Although we can treat any object we lift as a blob and say that the planet acts on the blob with an equal and opposite force to the one we exert, let's define our blob a bit more precisely. Let's say we have 1 gram atom of Gold. This is the relative atomic weight of gold in grams. Let's call that weight x so here so far we have mg gold=x. Let's take the weight of the earth as X. So we have Mg earth as X. So in terms of equal and opposite force we have x=X. But since 1 gram atom of gold equals (N) atoms of gold or Avogadro's number. We have the resistance of (N) atoms of gold equal to the resistance of all the atoms in the Earth. Where it appears to me that the resi…
