I was reading of how many problems car companies are having with the software they put in their luxury cars (most makes, german , japanese). People can't start their car, etc. and it stays in service for a long time because of software bugs. The microprocessors they introduced to control alot of things in the modern luxury cars IS NOT A GOOD IDEA. Software is still designed like an art, it hasn't acquired all the real engineering precision of mechanics etc. Before putting software in cars, they should design it with top notch precision, and according to a very strict engineering process just like engines are made. This method of designing software must still come of …

  3. In java, the order of pre/post increment operator comes first but why, for eg, int x = y++ the asignment operator executes first????, then y plus 1???? in my sense of logic, x should be y+1, not y according to the order of operator in java, y++ and ++y should be no difference, because they are the first in the order but actually, the JVM works not as what I expect, I think maybe the order of operator for java in my reference book is wrong, since x = y+1, that '+' should come before post increment operator in order as the result shows Can any one tell me how does the operator work in my particular case??? thx Albert Can any

My computer had been on for about 7 hours... I opened up my computer, ie. opened up the case and left it running like that, after about 10 minutes: the heatsink on the processor had cooled from hot to room temperature the PSU (power supply unit) casing had cooled from hot to room temp the PSU fan was blowing out warm instead of hot air the heatsink on the north bridge/south bridge (dunno which one, whichever has a heatsink!) took about 1 hour to go from hot to a bit less hot, same with the graphics card heatsink and the RAM. Conclusion: Heatsinks are good, but you really need a fan to get the heat off a heatsink A fan makes a big difference as does a hea…

Can this be done? Just connect the two PCs via their modems? What could be done with this connection eg file transfer. Also if one of the PCs had a broadband connection via a 10/100 card could the other computer access the net? I lknow this wont work without special software on at least one of the PCs. Also is it possible for to PCs to communicate thru serial ports?

Hey guys, I'm an aspiring Game Designer and here's my question: I've heard that a Computer Science degree doesn't generally give you a big boost when applying for a job at a game company. Do you think that a degree in Digital Entertainment and Game Design would give me a big boost seeing as how it's much more specific to the Game Design scene? This is a pretty significant question I need answered before I spend 2 more years of my life and thousands of my dollars in a technology school going for the degree, thanks!

For those of you who are familiar with Stirling Cycle engines, then skip this. Otherwise, go to http://travel.howstuffworks.com/stirling-engine.htm if you want to know how one works. Why aren't stirling engines used as heatsincs/fans in computers? They don't require any electric power, and they consume heat on their own. It seems like it'd be much more power and heat efficient than the systems being used now...

I have created a script that registers a user, but instead of using a password it uses an image to verify the user. It creates a 100 pixel image and stores each pixel in a db. When the user attempts to login they must upload the image. The script then runs through to make sure all pixels match in the database. Please go to http://www.funnestgames.com/sci_i/register.php 1. Register 2. Download the image it prompts 3. CLick the login link after the image is downloaded 4. Login It is that easy and it will greatly help me work out kinks. I understand people are concerned about spam mail, so feel free to enter a fake email address. I that input option to …

I am looking for a good, free content management system for my website. It should be PHP and MySQL based (or something compatible, whatever) and very EASY TO USE. I could find my way around one, but I may not be the only person using it. It should be suitable for posting daily news and such.

I am having problems intalling Mandrake Linux 9.0. I'm currently downloading 10.0 but I thought I might try to sort out these problems anyway. When I insert the disk into my drive and choose "boot from cd-rom drive" it opens up the graphical installer splash screen for Mandrake. However, when I hit install it sputters about for a minute with the screen black. Then it stops doing anything at all and I have to turn off my comp to get out. Do have I to partition before I install? Or could it be something else? Any ideas?

I've always read that there are many transistors inside a computer chip. However, when I took the CPU out of an old computer, I cut through the plastic outside shell of the CPU, and it appeared to by empty inside. From the outside, it looked like about 20 metal connectors that enter the CPU. Inside, I saw that they simply go through the CPU, and out the other side. I didn't see any other pieces inside the CPU. I kept cutting the CPU into smaller pieces, but I could find nothing inside. How did the CPU work? I think the name of the CPU was a Z80. The processor was only about 2 Mhz. Wouldn't there still have to be other pieces inside to make it work?

I was working on a report for school (on the computer), and so I can take my work to and from school, I saved all of my data on a floppy disk. I was working on it until I left about 3 hours ago (I had a little accident involving a car door, so I came back home), and now my computer won't read the disk, instead I get a pop up message that says: . I clicked yes, and got a pop up with a bunch of scroll bars, first one saying: "Capacity: 3.5", 1.44MB, 512bytes/sector" (only option), second saying "File System: FAT" (only option), third saying: "Allocation: Default allocation size" (only option), a text box with the words "Volume Lable: [text box]". I know little about computers. I can barely navigate to this forum and a few others. Lately I have been receiving emails from this organization: abuse@smileglobal.com They are accusing me of sending illegal attachments to someone I have never heard of. Since I have trouble sending attachments at all and only send them to a few friends, I am baffled. Could this mean someone has obtained access to my email login info and is using my email to spead some sort of mayhem? Are these people connected to some sort of scam? Should I respond to their accusations? I know this isn't an honest-to-god techie question but I would nevertheless appreciate some …

I tried upgraded our old computer from 98 to XP this morning without success. It said I needed to unistall programs that couldn't be upgraded (pc anywhere, some game controler thing and a few other programs). Well, I looked for them everywhere but i couldn't find them, so I can't really unistall them. Ok, no problem. Rather than upgrade, I just want to wipe off the old OS and put XP on in place of it. No upgrading. But now it wants to know what partition I want to install this to. It gives me one choice that says C: Partition1 9782MB (5764MB free) That doesn't look promising. Does anyone have any suggestions on what the easiest thing to do here is. I don't know to…

For christmas this year I got a new motherboard and processor and a new graphics card. Both are PCI express and therefor incompatible with my old ones (people have been suggesting i switch them out one at a time). I took out my old Mobo/proc and gfx card and replaced them with the new ones, found out the new Mobo is designed for SATA drives instead of ATA, mine are ATA. I have 2 ROM drives and 2 harddrives, at least 3 of which i need to have available. so i went out and got a PC I card that gives me 2 extra IDE slots. put it all together and turn it on. it gives me a screen that asks if i want to boot in safe mode, says the screen might be showing up because of hardware c…

The operating system is windows xp, the tablet pc edition. Does anyone know how he can get around this? He has no desire to get any of the previous owner’s information off of the pc, only to use it.
