Should a vein become exposed to the exterior of a human body and the skin where to heal around it what would happen to the vein? Would it do the opposite of what a foreign object would do and actually bury itself back into the body? Would it just continue to reside on the exterior of the body? Why would this happen in the first place:rolleyes:..........chirurgie........don't ask:-)!

As I understand it, some diseases are hiding in a latent state and become activated by stress. If it were possible to temporarily mimic stress, it might be possible to bring them out of hiding while the immune system is strong rather than weakened. Alternately, if it were possible to mimic not being stressed, then it might be possible to get them to hide when the immune system is weak. What do you folks think?

I know that FSH controls the general production of testosterone by stimulating the testicles. Testosterone is generally accredited with hair growth on men but is FSH also related?

This is topic is based on an account a friend told me about, whom I had not seen in many years. He was playing soccer and tore something in his knee. It was hard to walk because of the knee pain, so he consulted a doctor to schedule surgery. The first date just so happened to coincide with his planned honeymoon in Belize, so he and his doctor agreed to do it after he got back. The doctor gave him a cane to hobble around. One of the things he and his new wife planned to see in Belize, where Mayans ruins. He was afraid to climb the steep stairs to one of the temples, since he didn't trust is leg. He was content to wait at the bottom. The tour guide, who was this short…

  8. Hi. This all started when I was about 10 or 11. I always yawn (sometimes It's even hard to make a complete yawn) and deep breathe. Like if I don't have enough air in my lungs. Now I am 14 and It still continues. Also It seems like it's hard to breath only when I think about it. When I do something (homework or some important job) I forget about it and it gets OK. Maybe my brain "forgets" to breath normally or something?? Also when I turn my body up-down, left-right I hear very strange sounds from my lungs. Like if all the air there comes out. When I told about it to my parents they said like - "don't worry about it. You will get used with it Can anyone tell me what to d…

For those of you who follow medicine, an important and controversial trial was just published in the New England Journal of Medicine this month (actually gets published in print tomorrow). This is one of those landmark studies that will be talked about for years in the medical community, particularly amongst cardiologists and internists. Rosuvastatin to Prevent Vascular Events in Men and Women with Elevated C-Reactive Protein N Engl J Med 2008 359: 2195-220, available online free from the NEJM. The NEJM has also opened up a comment section titled "The JUPITER Trial: Will You Change Your Practice?" available until Nov. 26th online here. There are some insightful c…

I have Mega bad earache, bad enough that I`m even taking pain-killers (something I avoid like the plague). I was wondering, I have Codeine tablets, 10mg each and 30mg each, I`m happy taking a single 10mg tablet but it only lasts about 2 hours before the pain starts up again. the 30mg tablets say to take 2 of them every 4 hours (so that`s 60mg a pop!) I was wondering since 60 every 4 hours is OK, would it be safe for me to take 10mg every 2 hours? it`s a Third less than 30mg every 2 hours, but it`s more regular. is it safe to do it that way, Lower dose but at shorter intervals? I only want to take the bare minimum just to take the edge of the pain, so don`t eve…

I've been looking at indigestion tablets - they are very expensive. Most contain Kaolin, Magnesia etc.. Chalk dust being a major part. In some parts of the world, people actually eat dirt, clay and chalk to ease digerstion problems. Milk can help. My question is: Couldn't one just eat a pinch of clean chalk dust to cure/ease indigestion, instead of paying £3.00 for a packet of Rennie?

I don't know if this has been discussed, looks like it hasn't, at least not from the searches that I did, but my question is why is it that cancer or tumor check ups are not encouraged as much as say, dental check-ups? I can't recall anyone dying from dental caries and yet most people go for check ups every now and then. In developed countries these are damn expensive too.

If you got one, put it here. As someone pointed out in the "truth in labeling" thread - pizza is a no-no for diabetics. Try this instead: "Upside-down Pizza" Ingredients: Large Portabella Mushroom Olive oil Italian flavored bread crumbs (optional, but you don't have to use a lot) Veggies of your choice, ie, onions, bell pepper, black olives, (chopped finely) Turkey pepperoni, chopped finely. 1 tbls "Pizza Quick" pizza sauce. Part skim mozzarella, finely grated McCormick Pizza Spice in disposable grinder. http://www.mccormick.com/pressdisplay.cfm?ID=10896 (If you can find this, it really adds flavor and you don't have to use much) …

I didn't read the paper, but I saw a news blip on CNN about scientist discovering some genetic factors that could lead to nicotine addiction, with these factors appearing in up to 50% of the population. If this is true, it has an interesting conclusion, that is subtle. If we apply modern evolutionary theory, nicotine consumption had a selective advantage. If it wasn't a selective advantage, according to the current theory, the rate should be much lower, since those genes would be bred out. I am not for cigarette smoking, but using evolutionary theory, it is interesting to ponder why cigarette smoking created a selective advantage. Or, since we know cigarette smoking …

  18. Well, I already answered my own question, but I'm having a hard time editing my subject title. The way that I understand it is this. Our cells undergo DNA damage all day, every day for whatever reason, but mostly damaged by free radicals. Antioxidants work "by removing free radical intermediates, and inhibit other oxidation reactions by being oxidized themselves." On Wikipedia, the mechanism by which damage is done via radiation is unclear. Basically, what they are trying to say is that the radiation beam ionizes the water in the cell, which then forms hydroxyl radicals, which then damages the DNA, right? So what I am wondering is this. Antioxida…

I was curious if there was any condition or side-effect of medical treatment that caused one to have a smaller body (not thinner necessarily... body fat ratio not affected or affected minimally) in general, particularly the skeletal frame and possibly the organs. I know there are plenty of things that cause an increase in body size, naturally or unnaturally, just wondering if the opposite existed. This question isn't completely limited to humans; other examples in nature would be appreciated as well. Or is growth basically a permanent effect on organisms? Obviously, I'm speaking of changes that don't end in the death or severe harm. Thank you.

This study was conducted by the University of Kentucky and the results are after Lexington banned smoking in the public places.

Hi I'm not sure I'm in the right forum for this (perhaps the biology forum would've been better?) but it seems like there are a few discussions here about what is and isn't good for our health, so, here goes: I've been drinking milk regularly since I was a little girl. I Loooooove milk, I used to drink about 2-3 glasses (more or less) a day, sometimes more. Lately, I drink less (specifically since I don't quite like the milk in America, it tastes a bit 'plasticky' to me, but it's a matter of preference I guess). Recently, I poured myself a glass of milk at work and a friend of mine looked at me and exclaimed that milk is NOT actually healthy for us humans, th…
