  1. I've heard in a lot of my classes that HIV is nearly impossible to make a vaccine for because of how rapidly it mutates (among other reasons), but I've been wondering something for a while. It's my understanding that HIV can only infect macrophages and T-lymphocytes, more specifically CD4+ T-helper cells. And I've also heard that HIV is also uncurable because there is always a small percentage of the virus that remains dormant inside its host cell, making it unaffected by antiviral drugs. That got me thinking though, because I've also heard that HIV is a very weak and labile virus when outside a host cell. So would it be possible to cure an HIV infection by literally …

We can currently do transplants of lungs, kidneys, livers, etc. if those organs are damaged or diseased. Will we ever be able to do so with brains? I've heard a lot about the possibility of growing replacement organs in vitro or using 3-D printers to create replacement organs. When will we be able to do so with brains? What obstacles lie in the way?

Efforts to ameliorate or cure type 1 diabetes by transplanting either the entire pancreas or the functional units of the pancreas, the beta cell islets, have had little success due to their destruction either by normal immunity or by the same autoimmune response in the patient which caused diabetes in the first place. Also, with about 800,000 type 1 diabetics in the U.S. and only about 5000 cadavers becoming available for organ harvesting each year, the donor supply could never make any difference in the disease epidemiologically. A major alternative to this approach has been to transplant animal pancreas islets encasuled in a differentially permeable membrane which …

Obviously a lot of people are disgusted or titillated by the idea of drinking blood, but it seems like almost no one actually does it. The moral and practical barriers to drinking human blood are obvious, but animal blood is plentiful enough and probably plenty wasted. Do we avoid it just because of culturally taboo or are there medical reasons to avoid it? Presumably it would at least be a great source of iron. I've heard meat has hemoglobin in it, so we probably do ingest some blood, but why not drink it? In the Old Testament, blood drinking is explicity forbidden, which presumably means some people did drink it back then.

so first off i know this is weird but i would like to have an ampule or vial with my a small amount of my blood in it. past attempt's have failed since the blood coagulates and separates. i do not need "preserve" the blood so to speak since i will never inject it back in. my question: is there a household chemical or easy to get chem that will keep the blood stable (how it looks when it comes out) i know it is dangerous but i did lots of research and talked to a fe healthcare professionals about ho to extract the blood as safely as possible. thankfully i have good veins so even if said chem will ruin the blood all i care about is that it stays the same c…

Reader, I am a writer/student working on a novel that needs to spread a disease/virus all across the world (or most of it) and infecting millions of people world wide. I have been discussing this with fellow writers to see what would be the best way to do this. At first I thought of food, but had issues with food being sold and shipped world wide. One idea proposed was to use Mosquitos. A group of people could be infected with 'said unknown disease' and each person goes back home where their local Mosquitos feed on a few of them and spread it that way. I even threw in the idea of adding other blood sucking insects like the Kissing Bug, Ticks, and Bed Begs to help …

I wouldn't call this pain, but weakness in my thigh muscles that is really uncomfortable, more like a really bad tired feeling that pain.

So I am currently on my industrial placement as part of my pharmacy degree, here In Ireland the plan in the next few years is on the drug payments scheme, long term illness and government prescriptions, pharmacists will automatically dispense the cheaper Irish made generics in order to save the government money on these schemes, and if the customer wants to go with the brand name drug they have to pay the difference themselves. The company I am working for is already trying to switch people over to the generics to the change wont be too sudden however we are encountering a lot of resistance, particularly with older people. What are everybodies thoughts on this? Should peo…

Hi: I'm looking for an escape from life's sufferings. I want to OD on MPM. How do I do this? I'm not addicted to any drug nor do I ever plan to be. However, I have some questions about a once-in-a-lifetime consumption of morphine. "MPM" is an acronym for Molecularly-Pure-Morphine MPM is the purest form of morphine. An MPM molecule does contain any sulfate, HCl, salts, or other impurities. "MPM-fluid" is a liquid consisting solely of MPM and clean "drinking" water. In the MPM-fluid, the ratio of MPM to drinking-water is just high enough to give the liquid a viscosity similar to that of filtered orange juice but not higher. Where can I obtain MPM-flu…

I'm curious what are common forms of Autism that actually do show retarded speech but a fairly normal ability to function otherwise. I had thought a relative of mine had Asperger's but speech retardation seems to be contrary to general symptoms. I would really rather not ask her and am just curious if I can narrow it down. There are probably quite a few though right? Are there common ones?

The debate/argument with John Cuthber in the previous thread is piqued my curiosity about this subject and I have been continuing to dig around. A search in google scholar has revealed these two items, one published in 2004 and the other in 2006. Not the gradual change in position on alcohol consumption. http://www.sciencedi...376871685900018 This is entirely inline with John Cuthber's and other's position in here. A review of the literature on the positive benefits of light and moderate alcohol consumption suggests the following: 1. (1) Alcoholic beverages are food, containing approx. 7 calories per gram of ethanol. Beer contains small percentages…

Hi,I just have a doubt that has been puzzling me from Years. So here is it in the best way i can explain "A Non Virulent Bacteria When Genetically tailored to Produce Surface Molecules on its surface(My main thought is about producing CD4 molecule called CCR5 on its surface)When introduced inside a host of A Viral disease(HIV is my main concern),Thing is an obligate Virus is blind,It strictly detects cells by its Surface molecules & attaches to one to whom it has affinity. So HIV has to make a Choice, either CD4+T lymphocytes or The newly Introduced Altered Bacteria which has the selected CD4 on its surface ie CCR5 molecule(Considering a 50% chance to bind either of the…

  18. Hi,everyone, let me introduce myself first, i am a Master, female. I study female orgasm and sex behavior. As you know, female orgasm remains an evolutionary mystery, whatever from Freud to Kinsey, sometimes someone said G- spot really exist, and sometimes someone said G-spot never exist, the Clitoris is the only organ to give female an orgasm. but so far no one can give an conclusion for female orgasm. What i am doing now is going to end this situation and give the truth to the public, that will be a big bomb for everyone whatever men or women, and it really open a new area in science. Due to the less instruments i have, i need someone's coorperation…

Is it possible for someone to carry a virus or bacteria in their body without it causing a disease in them, then later infect themselves? For example, cold virus will typically infect a person when a person transmits the virus on their hand to the nose or eye. Is it possible to eat something with the virus on the surface of the food, have the virus pass harmlessly through the gut, end up on the person's hand, then finally make to the eye or nose where the person then gets a cold? There are also many bacteria in the digestive system that cause no problem to humans. Could that bacteria pass through the intestines, encounter a tear in the skin on the way out of the body,…

Therefore GPs are scientists even if they do not engage in research. http://medicalsciences.med.unsw.edu.au/somsweb.nsf School of medical sciences - faculty of medicine When I was working at the austin hospital I was not engaged in research, merely routine laboratory work, but I was never the less a grade 1 medical scientist. Exclusive engagement in scientific research does not seem to be a requirement for the title of 'scientist'. But then again the art of diagnosis is very much like research. The GP gather's initial evidence from the patient and formulates a hypothesis as to their illness. He then orders appropriate diagnostic tests, looks at th…
