  1. We are born with the capacity to rely on our cognition over time naturally, Is this capacity somehow diminished with the advent of secondary education, secondary meaning,(Schooling) out side of sense intake and inherent thinking capabilities. And does this education somehow form limits to our inherent cognition?

  3. Hello, I am writing a dissertation on the physiological implications of the Ramadan fast, and I have read in several sources that pre-loading the body with salt and water just before the fast (at dawn) could help slow down dehydration during the day. I don't get how this is possible... Don't we have a very fine system to regulate salt and water, and flush out any excess? I thought excess salt/water would increase the GFR, and activate the atrial natriuretic peptide and suppress aldosteron and vasopressin, thus effectively ridding plasma of all the 'pre-loaded' salt and water... What are your thoughts on this? Thanks in advance.

Ok, I'm not sure but I think i am developing appendicitis. The only symptom I have come across is the pain starting in the navel and going to the lower right abdomen. Should I go to the doctors or wait to see if it goes away (meaning it isn't the early stages if appendicitis)

  8. There has been some research into using MRI scans of the brain to communicate through the brain using patterns in brain scans and such(neuron interactions, etc.). Here is an idea I had. If there was a way to determine how neurons interact in the brain and developing an algorithm that encompasses the interactions of neurons in the brain, and an MRI could scan the patterns that exist in the brain, could there be a way to imitate the person's mind on a computer simulation? And to be able to communicate or interact with the simulation we would have to determine how neurons interact when someone hears, speaks, tastes, smells.etc. Of course, this is easier said and done…

  9. Its an odd combination I realize, but I'm currently a podiatry student and most research in podiatry is in the field of biomechanics. I have 2 years of experience in researching Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphomas but relating this to podiatry would be difficult since lymphomas in the axial skeleton are rare. So I'm trying to think outside the box... I would love a research idea that combines oncology and podiatry. Any ideas?

I remember hearing about this many years ago, and now I'm curious if any progress in this domain was made recently. From what I'm hearing, it's been a struggle for the medical community to discover how to allow the body to regrow lost organs and limbs. Which obviously, would be the most awesome thing to happen for people who had faulty organs removed or lost limbs in accidents. It was said that lizards provide clues regarding this, because if something cuts off their tail they will eventually grow a perfect new one. Earth worms are even more fascinating and even scary in this sense, since I often heard that cutting a worm in half will cause it to become two worms, eac…

  14. If I understand drugs are small molecules that activates or inhibits target proteins and results in a therapeutic benefit to the patien. So why do drugs have side effects? Drug is small molecules that are shape of proteins of they interact and therefore will bind to it.So why are there side effects? May be I'm confusing the future of target drugs with how drugs work? One of the main problem with diseasees , illnesses and Chemotherapy is side effects. And if I understand it is easy to make drugs , but very hard to make drugs that don't have side effects. That take cancer for example , it is easy to come up with chemotherapy !!! But very hard to come up up wi…

  15. I believe this study needs to get more publicity. We are never going to be able to rid the world of vaccination conspiracy theorists but at least we can educate more of the general public. It's unfortunate that there has been few news stories on this study even though it pretty definitively indicates there is no association. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24814559

  17. so for the last two days i get this feeling of burning inside with heat. as such i check my temperature which is between 101/102. no symptoms of fever like aches, nausea, chills, shiver. after staying under air-conditioner for an hour the temp. drops to 98. i have to mention that i have been suffering from fever for the last 10-11 days. the doctor carried out tests and diagnosed pneumonia for the reason of fever; as such prescribed antibiotics. and there are times when i get the symptoms of fever & temp rises. but i really need to know is there an even remote possibility of having temp as high as 102 & not feeling feverish? thanks.

  18. I once heard something about this in a documentary on TV, and it's an idea I find fascinating and amazing even if slightly creepy too. Today's technology allows advanced biological manipulation and medical procedures to be possible... even things such as cloning to some extent. But what about creating and growing functional organs and body parts from scratch? Or, an even more daring question, creating complete forms of life in the lab other than just simple bacteria? By "from scratch" I mean creating an organ or body using man-made devices and primary matter only... maybe with existing biological parts (like ADN) involved. For instance, I've heard about medicine being…

  19. Hello everybody. I have seen many people asking questions on this forum about the reason to why blood pressure drops as you get farther from the heart. But honestly, not a single answer satisfied me. My major is physiology, so it's quite funny that I still don't know this "trivial" detail. What is the physics behind the drop in blood pressure? Because I was not satisfied with any of the answers, such as, - Capillaries have smaller diameters (because diameter shouldn't make a difference locally: decreasing arteriolar diameter increases mean arterial pressure, not arteriolar pressure, because the blood in the arteries faces higher resistance ahead of it so the a…

Hello everyone, I don't understand sepsis. Ok I know Sepsis is SIRS (Systemic inflammatory response syndrome) to an infection. But I'm confused with these scenarios. 1) Lets say I have a UTI in kidney. The immune system localises the infection to kidney and causes massive inflammation in that area and fights the disease, with out allowing it to spread to otherarea. Now is this Sepsis? If it is not what do you call it? Here also inflammation towards infection occurs so why is it not called sepsis? Does CRP increase in this scenario? 2) Lets say I have a UTI in kidney. It spreads to all areas in body. Massive systemic inflammation occurs towards the infection. I'm assum…

I've always been told to wear socks when walking around the house bare-foot because I'm going to get sick - even when I'm standing on carpeted area. I've always walked around the house bare-foot, and even outside sometimes and never had any problems with it, yet I'm still told it's not a good idea. Is there any evidence to prove this idea that cold feet will cause you to get sick? From my personal experience this has never been the case.

  23. I wanted to start a discussion about complex diseases (atherosclerosis, asthma, multiple sclerosis, etc.) and why we have had a difficult time figuring them out. Is it because we are searching for that one cause (either gene or exposure) that we hope can explain the prevalence of the disorder, like cystic fibrosis. Or is it because we group people with similar symptoms under there syndromes but in fact their diseases have different etiologies and are not the same disorder. I do research on the genetics of asthma and the field is shifting towards better phenotyping of patients to better understand how different asthmas come to be. There is a general belief that large …
