Hello! Im a newbie at this site...and i'm trying to come up with an idea for this Gr.7/8 science fair...so sorry if this question sounds really dumb, however is it possible for one individual to have more than one blood type? I am aware that there are certain restrictions to which blood can be transfused to another blood type; i.e. the individuals with Type A blood can only receive blood from other individuals that only have Type A and O Blood. Type B individuals could only receive blood from those with Typed B and O. Type O could only receive from other O’s. And AB is considered as a ‘Universal Receiver’; hence individuals with Type AB could receive from anyone; whet…

I've always been taught that the formula for how much weight one gains/loses is very simple: calories in - calories out = weight gained (not in so many words of course). But then I hear of 'good' calories and 'bad' calories - or - calories that are easy to burn vs. those that are hard. If I were on a weight loss routine - reducing calories in through diet and increasing calories out through exercise - why would I need to worry whether the calories I'm taking in are 'good' or 'bad'? If it's as simple as calories in - calories out then does it matter whether the calories in part is mostly 'good' calories or 'bad'? So I guess the question is: if I've got the formula …

This is probably one of those simple questions that nobody's thought to ask before. Why is it that when humans are very nervous, they have the "butterflies in my stomach" feeling? What neurological system makes that happen?

Someone I know has showed interest in a certain nutritional supplement brand, and I have included an example of their marketing material below. I have the feeling that they might be more marketing than science, or that there might be nothing proprietary or special about their product. I have not included any links or brand names to avoid potentially breaking any terms of use. Could someone more knowledgeable that I am evaluate the following statements: " Finding a Better Way to Deliver Vitamin C to the Body's Cells Ultimately, a cardiologist introduced him to the concept of "liposome encapsulation technology" (LET). Although the technology had been used by researchers…

... is the title of a Discovery Channel documentary my wife and I recently discovered and purchased. It is about the NIH Clinical Center, Building 10, the largest research hospital in the world and, unfortunately, one of our best kept secrets IMO. This documentary is the first time the NIH allowed a camera crew to follow 4 patients, from admission through final treatments, as the patients sought final option care. I thought it was a very well done, often times moving production. I highly recommend it.

A randomized, double-blind, crossover study of the effects of long-term treatment with Salmeterol on asthma control was carried out (Wilding P et al. BMJ 1997; 314: 1441-1446). 101 subjects with mild or moderate asthma taking at least 200 micrograms twice daily of beclomethasone dipropionate or buclesonide were included. Patients continued to take this medication but were randomized to receive additionally either Salmeterol 50 micrograms twice daily or placebo for a six month period, with a one month washout between the two. The primary outcomes of the trial were a reduction in inhaled steroid use, exacerbations of asthma and the use of oral steroids. Select all of the fo…

Hi,I just have a doubt that has been puzzling me from Years. So here is it in the best way i can explain "A Non Virulent Bacteria When Genetically tailored to Produce Surface Molecules on its surface(My main thought is about producing CD4 molecule called CCR5 on its surface)When introduced inside a host of A Viral disease(HIV is my main concern),Thing is an obligate Virus is blind,It strictly detects cells by its Surface molecules & attaches to one to whom it has affinity. So HIV has to make a Choice, either CD4+T lymphocytes or The newly Introduced Altered Bacteria which has the selected CD4 on its surface ie CCR5 molecule(Considering a 50% chance to bind either of the…

I came across this site (http://www.grouppekurosawa.com) whilst researching coconut milk. They offer 'natural' OTC/herbal/food-based treatments for disease such as HIV and cancers. Here is a page on cancer that they have. It seems a bit funny to me that there are no refs to peer reviewed journals and on other parts of the site they even advise specific dosages of e.g. curcumin (what they term a 'natural medicine') Some quotes from the page "..we will show that direct contact of a metastatic tumor mass and a Kurosawa kocktail can induce massive and virtually immediate necrosis in the cancer cells. Although this seems like an ideal treatment protocol, it has it…

Imagine what would have happened to our world if there were no doctors to treat us from our diseases? The mortality rate would have increased and as such it would have tremendously affected the health of the nation. Scientific discoveries in the sphere of medicine have indeed come as a boon to human beings. One such discovery which has made quite a stir in the medicinal world is the discovery of umbilical cord blood stem cells and cord blood stem cells. The discovery of umbilical cord blood stem cells and cord blood stem cells have led to the prevention to a number of diseases which were other wise considered as incurable. Cord blood stem cell is the process of uti…

It is indeed a revelation in the medical world to have come up with something as cord blood stem cells to cure diseases. Cord blood stem cells which have been proven at healing severe illness are gaining popularity among parents who seem to be gearing up to this new found remedy by giving their umbilical cord blood for collection. It is a known fact that cord blood which is rich in stem cells, are often discarded at the time of child birth. With parents getting to know its benefits, they are now opting for umbilical cord blood donation, because diseases do not wait for a green signal to attack anyone. Having preserved this precious cord blood, you can take a sigh o…

Hello, everyone! First of all, I wish to apologize for stepping into a place where only the medical minds reside. To my relief, though, I’ve noticed that similar events have already occurred on these forums – that is, cases in which a question was asked by a layperson writing a novel with plot points involving viruses or bacteria. That is what I am doing, and I greatly wish to make this plot point seem plausible. I’m not sure if it is possible to mix this particular concept with the rest of the plot to such a point where a biologist would wave it off as actually acceptable… but, hopefully, at least to the point of not having said biologist angrily throw the book acro…

so we've all heard of the solution to this problem by simulating gravity through centrifugal force, but has anyone considered perhaps maybe there is simply a way in theory (as yet undiscovered) to prevent the body from shedding bone and muscle mass through medicine? perhaps there is a chemical agent that can be taken to trick the body into not shedding bone and muscle, or a way to alter the gene in the DNA (if its genetic) that tells the body to respond to a low gravity environment in the manner of "hey i dont need so much bone and muscle anymore, let me loosen my grip on it". is there any research into this, or is it even feasible theoretically?

The polyglutamine (polyQ) diseases are a group of neurodegenerative disorders caused by expanded cytosine-adenine-guanine (CAG) repeats encoding a long polyQ tract in the respective proteins. To date, a total of nine polyQ disorders have been described: six spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA) types 1, 2, 6, 7, 17; Machado-Joseph disease (MJD/SCA3); Huntington's disease (HD); dentatorubral pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA); and spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy, X-linked 1 (SMAX1/SBMA). I have spinocerebellar ataxia type 7. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24816443 Your ribosomes form polyglutamine tracts in certain proteins which causes the proteins to bind and become…

Isotretinoin (trade name: Accutane) is a powerful drug used in the treatment of acne. Four to five months of isotretinoin treatment usually leads to clearing of acne for one year or more after the medicine is stopped. Most other acne-controlling medicines are antibacterial agents, which are effective only if the medicine is used daily. Isotretinoin decreases the amount of oil produced by the skin's sebaceous (oil) glands. It may be as long as two months before you see improvement in your skin. There's no medicine we can add to speed up isotretinoin's action. In fact, sometimes acne gets worse during the first month or so of treatment. Side effects, such as lip dryness…
