Not sure if anyone will read this on a science forum, but there is simply no other forum where one could ask a question on orthodontics without being presented with the standard answer: as many braces as you can possibly fit in your mouth and pay for. My 15 year old son has a tooth with delayed eruption. This is the second premolar right (number 12). The root is completely developed and the tooth is just below the gum line but is hindered by the two neighboring teeth which are beginning to migrate to fill that gap. We went to an orthodontist for consultation, after this was pointed out by a dentist. A dental model was made and a bunch of complete x-rays to see the ex…

We have 2 hemispheres and these two sides of the brain responsible for different functions. The left hemisphere observing and responsible to do an action, the right hemisphere feel an emotion and responsible for the intuition. Each moment our brain has to choose which hemisphere it wants to use (our goal is to learn to balance it). The left side is realistic, logical, observing, analysing. Because of the analysing skill we built here one part of our personality which is the Ego. As we learn, experience and grow up our Ego is growing with us. (it is growing easier than the soul cause it is rational and we sense more rational things than emotional or fantasy) It is our so…

Hi! I'm a medical student, second year and I'd like to know your opinion on a matter. I'm planning to take part in the Anatomy Congress and I need a project title that would be both innovative and interesting. Did any of you took part in a congress like this or can help with sources for information? Anything would be useful. I'm thinking about something on sexes development, more into embryology but how the anatomy of the sexes is quite similar in terms of structure...I'd be thankful if anyone can help me.

I’m looking for some other options for careers that deal with trauma, at the moment I’m looking to train up as a physical therapist and then specialize in trauma, as out of all of the clinical careers I’ve looked at physical therapy appealed to me the most as it deals with the topics I’m interested in and is very flexible in the hours and places that you work at. So at the moment physical therapy is defiantly the direction that I’m going to head in, but I would just feel more at ease knowing that if physical therapy didn’t work out that there were other careers that deal with trauma and first aid that I could get into. The main concern I have with physical therapy is that…

Hi all, I'm posting here out of academic curiosity. I'm not asking for medical advice or diagnosis which I know you would not give. I have diabetic acidosis, previously confirmed. I recently tested my urine ph with a cheap meter from ebay. I did a crude calibration of the meter by testing my tap water which came out at 6.5 which is a bit low but reasonable. I have tested my urine previously and came up with values as high as 7.2 while not taking insulin but usually quite lower. I tested my urine last night and it was 4.1 re-tested and re-checked the meter. Is this even possible? When I read about studies of diabetic acidosis they usually mention the lowest tested…

Have you heard of that compound? Some interesting studies were done that demonstrated extraordinary, highly selective anti-cancer properties of 3-BP - unfortunately patent disputes between the researcher and John Hopkins University resulted in discontinuation of research. Since then limited studies on humans have been done in Germany and Colombia albeit with highly promising results (total eradication of metastatic liver cancer in a male patient and of small cell lung carcinoma in a Colombian female patient)

The psychiatrists that gave me the meds doesn't know how to fix this problem. I had hallucinations and was given antipsychotics Zyprexa for a while and Seroquel for while. They helped but as a side effect i have lost my creativity, imagination, my thoughts run slower, i am unable to daydream and fantasize like normal people. It's a bad condition to be in and i have consulted a psychologist too and they haven't been able to treat this problem. I hope someone here knows something about this and can help me with what to do to overcome this problem.

This is the best board I can think of to place this in, since it concerns how the human brain operates, so I'm placing it in the "neuroscience" boar. Suppose Mr. Defendant gets convicted of X Crime. However, as it turns out, the prosecutor did not disclose some potentially expulpatory evidence to the Defense, and as a result, his conviction gets overturned. So, Mr. Defendant goes into a new trial. During the second trial, the parties never attempt to hide that the Defendant was convicted before, and that this was his second trial. The jury is fully aware that he has been convicted before, but they don't know the reason it was overturned. Would the jury - a…

Could someone be implanted covertly with carbon nanotube electrodes or some other kind of neuroimaging technique for instance like EcoG electrodes invasivly inside your brain for mapping your brain activity again covertly till he lives his ordinary life and translating recorded patterns via BCI,connecting the neuroimaging results from covert scaning with video tapes of his daily action and all that leading to real mind reading that has a power to revealing his deepest thoughts. And all this stuff without the permission and knowledge of this poor victim, covertly done by some agency or powrfull evil institution or genius? I expect that the answer would be probably NO, but…

Hi guys! I would like to request your help.As you guessed from the title,I am looking for the most effective and proven osteoanabolic agents out there.I am not looking for osteoporosis drugs, biphosphonates or other bone resorption inhibiting drugs.I am looking for bone anabolic agents which enhance bone size,NOT density.Basically I am looking for something which can thicken bones,ie make their diameter bigger, wider, thicker, enhance their cortical thickness.I am looking for these agents because I had an accident in the past, which left me disfigured on many places, needless to say that I lost bone as well. And no,grafting is unfortunately impossible. My doctor told m…

I am currently doing an osteology module at university and the assessment includes writing a report on an adult and juvenile skeleton. I found a pair of bones in the juvenile (aged 5-6) and as the photos depict they exhibit a peculiar curving. I think they may be phalanges or metacarpals from thumb which display some sort of pathology, but as I am new to this I very well may be wrong. Any help in identifying the bones and possible pathology would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Hello, does anyone know of a way to make one's heart skip a beat ? I have heard it can be done either by mental practice or breathing patterns, but am unsure of how to go about accomplishing it by either of these means. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I'm making Master's Thesis in university, relating to neuroscience. From following issue I have found contradictory information, so can you confirm is it correct or not. "In facial muscles (or in all muscles innervated by cranial nerves) all motor units are always activated when muscle is used, and only action potential rate changes when used force changes." If there's differences in muscles innervated by different cranial nerves, how it goes in muscles innervated by facial nerve and in muscles innervated by trigeminal nerve.

Are there any theories which directly relate these two, that this feature of neurons could be necessary for consciousness to emerge? I've read high conductance states are found in thalamocortical radiations and I vaguely remember thalamocortical radiations being implicated in consciousness in another theory (dynamic theory?).

Hi I'm looking for info on the effect of muscle strain on sliding filaments. Does anyone know where I might find something I can use in an assignment? I scoured the web but all I find is how the sliding filament theory works. Or how D.O.Ms affects the z lines. I'm talking about a grade 1,2 or 3 strain not delayed onset muscle soreness. Thanks

I have a idea about psychology what do people think? Psychology is a throwback of Ape Human evolution and come about through argument. I think the cerebellum and ears have a large role to play in Human psychology leading to other more worldly psychological meaning let me explain. The Mind interprets intelligent sounds through the ears and matches these with sight through the temperal lobes to allow us to think and precive thought and interpret argument. This seems logical? yes however there is a evolutionary flaw that leads back to argument people may not understand let me explain my thoughts on this appropriate idea about the mammal mind. The cerebellum …

I will attach the graphs. Here is what I understand. Let me know if something is wrong SA node/Pacemaker Potential (and AV node?) The permeability of potassium decreases based on the graph and potassium is kept within the cell and less goes out of the cell. Then the fast gated calcium channels open for a rapid depolarization of the muscle cell. Then the calcium permeability increases so there is a lot of calcium rushing into the cell. The calcium permeability then decreases so less calcium is exciting the cell. Then during the repolarization the potassium channels open to help repolarize the cell. The permeability of potassium increases so potassium…

Hi everyone Try folding your thumb completely into your handpalm. At the same time, try to keep your other fingers stretched. You're not able to, aye? The opposite, you can do: you can fold your other fingers in, keeping your thumb stretched. Folding your index finger in (completely!), it is impossible to keep your middle and ring finger stretched. You can stretch your little finger almost completely. Folding your middle finger in (completely!), it is impossible to keep any other fingers stretched, except for your thumb. Folding your ring finger delivers you the same result, with even a more remarkable influence on the little finger. Folding your little f…
