Hello science forum To cut right to the chase I am trying to build a device and have no idea where to start. I made this post here as I don’t even know which science sub-forum it would go in. I have tried searching on the internet for both ‘invention’ and ‘modification’ forums as they would likely be more suited to discussing my idea. However ‘invention’ as expected brought up nothing but results for patenting inventions and other tips for personal gain with inventions while ‘modification’ gave me a whole list of resources to do with the subject of video game mods. So here I am…. I will try to keep this as short as possible. Simply put I want to modify a standard…

I have a question for those electic engineers out there. Is it possible to modify a normal anolog AM/FM radio to tune into around 10 - 27 mhz or higher? I think most short wave radio's these days use SSB (single side band) and i know you need special circuits to recieve them. I dont want to get too technical but I have a theory that by modifying the variable capacitor or the coil, i can pick up other frequencies. can someone please tell me if im an idiot for thinking this? also, are most cb radio's/walkie talkies FM or AM?

Hi I'm a high school junior and I've almost selected aerospace engineering as my career. But I still have doubt if it is better compared to other engineering fields! So I just want some suggestions from you people. But I need points which are supported by strong sources!

What can I do if one of the terminal pins on a LED is broken to 0.4cm, and I can't buy another new one? How can I make the terminal pin longer? Because I can twist wire around it anymore- it is too short. Would soldering works in this case?

Hello. At what average speed would a turbine have to continually operate in order to power a household's average daily electricity usage? Is there a formula I could use to figure this out? Thank you. Charles B "Stupid"

I am getting so unbelievably sick and tired of sweating in the spring/summer because my dad won't let me turn the AC on because it "cost to much". In the winter, he runs the heat constantly. Even now in the spring with 65-80 degree weather, he runs the heat every morning for 3 hours. In here (the computer room) it's always like 15 degrees hotter then it is outside and atleast 5 degrees warmer then the rest of the house.

These devices apparently exist as a quick Google search will reveal. However I can find nothing definitive on the matter, and I've racked my brain for search terms. I would like to get my hands on something like this, but I'm drawing blank stares. Has anyone here come across these in their travels?

have an idea or theory to produce clean electricity. My idea starts with a weight with a rope connected to a generator. If the weight is thrown off a cliff it would turn the generator and produce electricity until the weight stopped. This is an example of kinetic energy to create electricity. What if the weight was a submarine like object and instead of a cliff you place it in deep water? The weight would turn the generator as it submerged, then rise to the top and do it again. What if you could connect the weight to a generator as it’s rising? This would generate power as it is going down and as it is rising. Has something similar been done? Can this be done? Can it be d…

Ok, as far as I know from what i've heard, it's theory and can't exist on earth, but... How would something like this work and be implimented? In a sci-fi manga i havn't read yet, it's used for armor, but that's all I know..

I'm a H.S. junior in FL. In the past months I really been thinking to myself, What on earth do I want to do? I been amazed by airplanes my whole life and spaceshuttles too. I think engineering them, well that'll be awesome. But here's the problem, I don't even know what aerospace eng. is like? I want to see first hand in a company of some sort what they do and what they're like. And I have another problem, My math. I know Engineering equals math. My math is not the greatest out there, but I am way above average, on my math and science skills. My G.P.A. is 3.3 right now and hopefully that'll change.(My freshman year ) Anyways I was wondering where would I look…

I had an idea just a little while ago about a new type of flying multi-application device that would use a singular propellor and tower assembly. But I wanted to use a singular gyroscope to keep stability and I began to wonder, Could a gyroscope, if turned on an axis, be used to steer a flying device so long as no other forces, except for lift, are acting on it? If so I have idea that I would like to patent.

I'm currently a junior in Wisconsin. I'm fascinated by the field of biotechnology and all the possible benefits that it could bring. I'm trying to plan an education path for a career in biotechnology and creating my own biotech company(years down the road). If someone could list the top ten colleges or something or maybe map out what they've done to get into the field it would be greatly appreciated. EDIT: Oh I'm a junior in high school.

I am trying to learn how to design circuits and was going to start with something that is "useful" and design a voltage amplifier. Was wondering if anyone could tell me the flaws (if any) that are in the below problem. The data sheet for the transistor is here : http://www.ortodoxism.ro/datasheets/microsemi/2n3634.pdf and here is my little circuit : Vcc = 10v Ic = 10mA Hfe = 100 Q1 = 2N3635 Ib = (Ic/Hfe) = (.01/100) = 0.0001 or .1mA R1 = (.5Vcc)/Ic = (5v/.01) = 500 R2 = 1/(Ic+Ib) = 1/(.01+.0001) = ~99 R4 = (Vr2+Vb-e)/(9*Ib) = 6v/.9mA = 6666 Vr3 = 10-6 = 4v; R3 = 4v/(Ir4+Ib) = 4v/1mA = 4000 R1 = 500 R2 = 100 R3 = 4k R4 = 6.5k o Vcc | …

I'm looking into a career in aerospace/aeronautical engineering. I've found a lot about the career but the one thing that I haven't found that I want to see are blueprints. Does anyone have an example of blueprints that might be drawn up but the as/an engineers? Or a link to some blueprints? Thanks.

I didn't come up with the name, science olympiad did. Anyways, I have joined my schools science olympiad team, and I have chosen the task of creating a model aircraft to fly for over 2 minutes minumum. I'm sure some of you have been in science olympiad before and have even participated in this event, so, I thought this would be an ideal time to pass this design I came across onto you. The rules are located here; http://www.tx.ncsu.edu/science_olympiad/Tournament_information/Event_rules_nc/wright_stuff_b_06.htm And the design I want to emulate looks similar to this; And this is the one that most people tend to build; The only things we are allow…

If zero point energy is possible (wich there is evidence to assume so, it would just be difficult to cultivate this technology to a useable state) then what would be the waste? (I forgot what the name of the law is, but energy can only be transformed and not destroyed or extracted from "thin air") So, theoretically there should be a waste from zero point energy. What would it be (or what is it?)? A friend and I were discussing this subject and the paradoxes of the theory of realativity and such. We are wierd like that, but anyway (sorry). What do you think/know the waste product is? Because it has to have a waste product according to the law of (whatever it's called, lol)…

I figure that wiring and basic electrical engineering are quite useful skills. I am also interested in the physics involved. But a big problem with talking about capacitance or current or whatever in a classroom is that it is not hands on, and so doesn't help me a lot in real life. So in this thread I would ask for people to suggest very simple projects to give me some experience with basic cicuits, wiring things, stuff like that. Basic is the key word here. While I know a fair amount of basic theory I've never wired a single thing in my life. So a project doesn't have to be big, or educational, or anything. Basically as long as I can make something, and then some…

Well, coincidentally, while I am making my mousetrap catapult, my drafting class is assigning us a mousetrap CAR fun assignment, wanting us to design a car powered on a mousetrap that would go the furthest. So, what kind of things do I need to note for a long distance mousetrap car? It can be slow to a crawl, but really long distance traveller.
