The picture you watch above is the design of phone carries the name of the Nokia E-Cu and the advantage of being shipped by heat, where the idea that the work on the existence of generators thermal covers your phone and you convert heat into electrical energy, so if you want to charge your phone all you need to do is put it in your pocket! http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/tech/emergency-mine-rescue.html You all might want to check out this Nova program. I think it is totally awesome that a Nova crew could be on the scene and record the event in more detail than our news can give us. It is awesome that when these events happen, everyone around the world can be aware of them at the time of the event. This transcends us beyond our own back yard and beyond our religious and national groups. I believe the promise of the New Age is a possibility. The New Age is a time of peace, high tech, and the end of tyranny.

Thankfully science has been recognised by the coalition government as being important to the UK economy. However, in reality the flat-cash settlement we will have over the next few years will still present a tough situation to UK based scientists. We also still have a crisis in university funding. The IOP report on the Comprehensive Spending Review can be found here. The BBC news report can be found here.

  5. NEW CANADIAN INSTITUTE TO BRING PHILOSOPHERS AND SCIENTISTS TOGETHER TO ANSWER THE WORLD'S TOUGH QUESTIONS AND SOLVE WORLDWIDE CHALLENGES London, Ontario, October 15, 2010. Philosophers think through difficult questions regarding science and technology before they catch the public's eye -- whether considering the legal or ethical consequences of technological innovations before they hit the market, or debating the appropriate goals of publicly funded research in a democracy. Scientists have the expertise and knowledge to develop solutions to many of the challenges we face in the modern world. Collaboration between philosophers and scientists can help ensure that soci…

As we all know there has recently been a shortfall in science funding in the UK. This lack of support for science is likely to continue due to the financial situation of the country. However, cuts in science funding could do a lot of damage for the future of UK science and engineering. So, Dr Jenny Rohn, a cell biologist at University College London has set up "Science is Vital". Please have a look at the website and sign the petition. There is a rally organised for the Saturday 9th October at 2 PM.

  9. Started by Dr P,

Hi, I have created a website for biologists/biochemists/molecular biologists etc, which is a directory of lots of useful scientific websites. Please have a look and see what you think: www.bio-marks.com/ Biomarks is a website designed to give the scientific community a portal for all the useful and popular scientific web pages. This website is unfortunately not inclusive of all websites and indeed Biomarks encourages the scientific community to use “missing link” and “broken link” icons at the top of the page to help provide a better and up to date resource.

An interesting paper about how pharma companies sneak marketing aspects into reviews and commentaries. Normally the FDA regulates what can be said about a drug in marketing. However in this report at least one company has been shown to circumvent that by ghostwriting articles that are designed to market their products. Needless to say this is an extremely unethical on so many levels (including also unethical treatment of authorship). Link

  18. Interesting article I came across while viewing sciencedaily.com a few days ago. I thought the stuff was cool and quite critical. I suspect when I get a chance, I'll be looking into the original articles For now, I suspect some of you who like studying modern biology and various aspects of animal/bug psychology and sociology would find this article an interesting read. As follows, there is a link and a bit from the article: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/08/100826141221.htm Genomes of Two Ant Species Sequenced: Clues to Their Extraordinary Social Behavior

In this article the authors provide evidence that tetratpod diversity is driven ecologically. So rather due to competition, the diversity was the result of conquering empty niches, a process known as adaptive radiation. Conversely habitat destruction is then likely to be the main element in destroying biodiversity. Sahney, Michael J. Benton, and Paul A. Ferry Links between global taxonomic diversity, ecological diversity and the expansion of vertebrates on land Biol. Lett. August 23, 2010 6:544-547; published online before print …

Tiny cancer-fighting agents are poised to play a big role in the future of chemotherapy. The breast cancer foundation Susan G. Komen for the Cure has awarded a UC Davis researcher $450,000 for the development of nanoparticles capable of effectively targeting and destroying tumor cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed. The grant, given to Dr. Lorenzo Berti, is a part of $3.2 million the foundation plans to invest in California cancer research institutions beginning in 2010. The technology exploits a unique weakness in the blood vessels that feed malignant tumors – they leak. "These blood vessels, unlike normal blood vessels, have big holes in them," sai…
