NEW CANADIAN INSTITUTE TO BRING PHILOSOPHERS AND SCIENTISTS TOGETHER TO ANSWER THE WORLD'S TOUGH QUESTIONS AND SOLVE WORLDWIDE CHALLENGES London, Ontario, October 15, 2010. Philosophers think through difficult questions regarding science and technology before they catch the public's eye -- whether considering the legal or ethical consequences of technological innovations before they hit the market, or debating the appropriate goals of publicly funded research in a democracy. Scientists have the expertise and knowledge to develop solutions to many of the challenges we face in the modern world. Collaboration between philosophers and scientists can help ensure that society guides scientific research appropriately and responds to research results productively. Rotman, O.C., LL.D., Businessman and Philanthropist Dr. Jane Maienschein, Professor and Director of the Center for Biology and Society, Arizona State University Dr. Philip Kitcher, John Dewey Professor of Philosophy, Columbia University 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Annual Rotman Institute Lecture in Philosophy and Science featuring Dr. Philip Kitcher of Columbia University . Recognized as one of the most influential philosophers of science of the past two decades, Dr. Kitcher will deliver "Authority, Responsibility and Democracy" the first of two lectures under the topic "Science in a Democratic Society". Dr. Kitcher will present his ideas regarding the role of science in a democratic society. The lecture is free and open to the public.
