What's going on in the world and how it relates to science.

  1. The Marxist idea of history being teleological, i.e. progressing towards a specific, predetermined goal seems to me to be a secularized version of Christian eschatology with the World Revolution being the equivalent of the Day of Judgement and Communism (stateless, classless society) being the equivalent of Paradise/Kingdom of Heaven. The similarities are especailly uncanny with Marxists Leninists - they have their own prophets (Marx and Engels), the Apostle (Lenin), the infallible Pope (Stalin/Mao), the Judas iskariote (Trotsky, Deng Xiaoping), priesthood (the vanguard party) etc. Maoists even had a thing called "struggle sessions" which were public lynchings of individu…

As far as I can see, if we compare USA with Europe, the latter looks like USSR: it has more equality, but less freedom. The laws control everything in Europe; for example, cucumbers for sale must be of a strictly defined shape. And this makes too difficult for a smart person to start its own business. I have heard from many people, that in Europe, people drink more alcohol, than in the USA. This can be explained as the result of political situation. A psychologist have told me, that craving for alcohol is a consequence of the absence of aim in life; and it seems that the lack of freedom in Europe makes the Europeans more prone to alcohol. The Americans were at least able …

  5. Just want to see if people think if a platform where everyone, (and yes I do mean everyone, even if at signing up, verifying individual’s identities and providing a safe workable voting system is practically impossible) could be represented as a Global Citizen would be a good thing? As a democratic platform, all votes would only be on policies that would be umbrella policies that affect all of humanity. So a first ever vote would be ‘Do you want to live in a peaceful world or not’, or ‘Do you want protect the global natural environment’. I am not asking for opinions of whether it could be achieved, as atm it can’t, but rather would such a system if it could be, be advanta…

  6. I would like to say; If the American Government were happy to fire a Hell Fire Missile at the UAP. They CLEARLY don't believe the UAPs are of Alien origin. Which leaves with me two options and they are both REALLY strange. 1: They believe they are China or Russian Drones 2: They believe it could be some sort of amphibious undiscovered life like an armoured Box Fish or Super JellyFish Edit: I missed, this was supposed to be in Speculations. Ooops. Sorry. 2nd Edit: Politics, I'm happy with that.

  7. It seems unlikely because why would you want to irradiate the land you want to occupy? However, suppose Putin did use a nuke, how would the US and other nations respond? It would probably not be a nuclear response. Could a response be a massive conventional strike by thousands of cruise missiles?

  8. How would you describe yourselves? I myself have experienced quite a significant poltiical evolution from being a Libertarian at age 18-21, then a Social Democrat and then a non demonational Marxist this year (age 31-31) although I am tolerant of other left wing movements as well as Christian Democrats. Mostly socially progressive as well, ambivalent about gun rights (gun ownership rate is negligible here in Poland and there isn't much debate about it). My political evolution towards the left started with a gradual realization that free market cannot solve everything roughly at age 21.

I am very worried about geopolitical situation developing recently. India leaning towards China could be just end to USA's position as world's superpower. It will not only impact geo-politics I am worried about scientific and technological leadership USA has been enjoying. Unfortunately American public severely underestimate impact of immigrant in the scientific and technological field. Most of the recent strides in AI, batteries and quantum computing have been led by Chinese and Indian immigrants. Loosing that channel could reverse American leadership. Technical center's will slowly move towards Asia in large numbers.

It's unclear if the class certification prompted the settlement or what terms authors agreed to, but according to court filings, the settlement terms are binding. A lawyer representing authors, Justin A. Nelson, told Ars that more details would be revealed soon, and he confirmed that the suing authors are claiming a win for possibly millions of class members.“ I saw something recently that claimed a significant part of construction…

Iowa Democrats win massive upset...Iowa Democrats win massive upset to break GOP supermajorityCatelin Drey's victory may portend more good news for Democrats next yearAn 11 point Republican advantage turned to a 10 point Democrat win by Catelin Drey.. It would be gutwrenching if similar results to this had not occurred but this is a modicum of good news. Whether it will translate to the midterms if indeed the midterms are allowed to reflect voters' wishes in the ballots is another question. I have the suspicion that the Republican strategy is to provoke a national (notional?) emergency so that the midterms can be cancelled or falsified and I don't see how that can be pre…

Hi all. You own a salmon nursery. Your reproduction technique/genetics or somewhow for a couple of years puts a distinctive orange spot on the fish skin coming out of your 'factory' facilities. The young salmon are freed to the river and they continue to sea and open sea until adults. If caught by a fisherman, could you claim ownership by the orange spot identification ? 🙄 Twisting the above... If every fish released is tagged with 'ownership' as a dog would; and caught by a fisherman at sea... I think it has been done extensively with free roaming cattle 'branding'.

There are statistics predicting how likely you are to buy something. But is there a public system that will predict war? I mean we have sports game stats, but what if we made an open source software to predict wars? Would it cause or prevent wars? But if we predicted a country going to war we would know there motivations. So if we gave each country a rating of their differences such as military power, economic stability, and strategic options could we influence the world to peacefully handle disputes?

  16. A believe that the best political system would be a “referendum democracy”: if an online referendum is performed at least each week, and these referendums should cover not only laws, but also decisions within the competence of the judiciary power (fines and punishments). If the population votes to ban a mass media, so be it; and vice versa, if the population votes to fine people who slander this mass media, so be it. I hope my logic is clear. However, with this system new problems will arise due to the Condorcet and Arrow's theorems: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condorcet_paradox https://youtu.be/qf7ws2DF-zk These theorems can be illustrated by the follo…

I have no idea whether the observation that follows is in any way original and I advance it with temerity, not being a US citizen, but it is something that has struck me due to a book I am reading on the lead up to the English Civil War.https://www.historytoday.com/archive/review/blood-winter-jonathan-healey-review It is notable that at the time it was the monarch who ran the government, appointed ministers and took or endorsed the decisions they made. Parliament's job was chiefly concerned with approving taxation. Watching the shocking ease with which Trump is able to turn the USA into an absolute, capricious monarchy, it occurred to me that the basics were perhaps alrea…

  19. 1) In many US states and in Poland, the abortions are prohibited. At the same time, in some US states the referendums had been performed relating this question, and as far as I know, everywhere the people voted to allow abortions (both in Democratic and Republican states); 2) During the last 20 years, the Europe had been de-militarizing, the governments of the European countries did everything to reduce funding of their armies. Since 2016, Trump tried to criticize the European leaders for spending less than 2% of GDP for the armies, and only in last months he had success with this – after his public “betrayal” of Ukraine and new defeats of Ukraine. At the same time, in Sw…

Currently there are many cryptosceptics (crypto-deniers, "no-coiners") in the world, especially in authoritarian countries, and I like to argue with such people. Below I write two simple speculations, which explain why the cryptosceptics are wrong: The inflation is in fact a hidden taxation, and this "tax" is mostly paid by poor people, not the wealthy (because wealthy people store their riches not in the form of money, but in the form of assets like real property). And this situation makes useful any things which help people to store their savings: 1) Let's assume that there is some completely useless and worthless product on the market, let's call it pipyruses; and ever…

  23. The situation in Gaza...I was thinking about the way that everything is being kept at a distance and shot through a soft lens by most of the media these days. The death figures, for example: not included in the MOH figures are those people who have died because of the war, but not directly from IDF military action. Several analyses suggest that at least 200,000 people in Gaza are dead today that would still be alive if Israel had not attacked and blockaded Gaza. That is decimation, in the original Roman meaning of the word: one in ten Palestinians. These deaths have arisen though lack of medical care and drugs, exposure, increased risks from malnutrition, epidemic disease…

Almost five years ago in October 2020, Mother Jones published a lengthy article by writer and film maker Leland Nally which makes fascinating re-reading in the light of the most recent political arguments within MAGA over the ‘Epstein Files’. https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2020/10/i-called-everyone-in-jeffrey-epsteins-little-black-book/ In the article the author tells the story of how he obtained a copy of Jeffrey Epstein’s ‘little black book’, parts of which first surfaced on the now defunct Gawker website in 2015. It’s a 97 page contact book containing some 1571 names in all, with roughly 5,000 phone numbers, and several thousands of email addresses and home addr…
