Dark matter is what we know, about what we don't know...

Alien origin thought experiment.
You can know everything about a mouse, but you can never understand what it is too be a mouse; if you want to talk to a mouse, and make sense, you must become a mouse. The best way to learn French, is too live in France. I'm not picking ideas apart, I'm asking if the idea has merit, reasonably. My only philosophy is too question (myself mostly), if that's hairy fairy... Then I'm guilty as charged and proud of it. Perhaps, training is a life long process. So are the distances...

Alien origin thought experiment.
I can be obscure and I can be mysterious, mostly because I lack the training to be more articulate, but a clue is a clue, some people get it and some don't. How loud do you imagine we are? AFAIK We're struggling to send a coherent message to voyager...

Only people who think they know better, can judge a wine over whiskey; I just get pissed...

How we think Jesus will return verses how he actually will return
I've re-read your post's and I'm still confused, can you help me understand.

Alien origin thought experiment.
Perhaps, but the point I was making with said creature, is to illustrate the difficulty of first contact, trying to communicate with something we have absolutely nothing in common with. Even if we shared a similar physiology, it's extremely unlikely we'd share anything relatable with which to base a common languge, with enough syntax to understand the difference between a friendly gesture and a mortal threat.

How unsafe are the gullible ?
How unsafe are the gullible, they're prone to eugenics... 😉

How we think Jesus will return verses how he actually will return
The same idea will be understood time and time again, because it makes sense at the time and because it's a simple idea; be nice... No wonder so many have predicted, a return to understanding when the time is right. I forsee a future when being nice to other's, is good for me... Why does it matter who told me?

Alien origin thought experiment.
How many times are going to pick up the ball, stick out your tongue and go home, rather than answer a reasonable question? The data suggests growing statistical significance.

Alien origin thought experiment.
For the two to be equivalent they both have to be the same colour: I'm trying to explain my position (different flavours) and you're trying to excuse your position (just bitter)...

Alien origin thought experiment.
Are you suggesting an advanced alien species can't be sustained by absobing light? Or are you just anthropomorphising? I thought the implication was clear, do it honestly.

Alien origin thought experiment.
It's a thought experiment, so think about it...

Alien origin thought experiment.
Yawn... 🙄 You don't seem to have read the topic title (or any of my post's), so perhaps you do that, and then how about you take a day off and just answer, yet another, honest straightforward question, honestly. Pretty please... 🙏 Wir

Alien origin thought experiment.
You failed to answer the above dimreeper? Because it's not relevant to the topic, but if you insist. Firstly, chemosynthesis doesn't need sunlight, so a parent star isn't necessary* and secondly the sagan quote isn't relevant to your question, unless you mean a parent star litterally, in which case the question is meaningless. * whether that means life is out there without a parent star is unknown, so the question is moot. Now your turn: How would you explain to an alien, that is sustained by absorbing light, that your hungry for pork chops and a salad? Maybe go for a first, and actually answer this question.

Alien origin thought experiment.
No, you've missed the point entirely; I asked you to use your universal language to explain a feeling that an alien could understand without the necessary context. Instead you try to explain why we don't need a universal language, it's almost like you don't speak the language you insist is universal. Indeed, it reminds me of the film "Wall-e" and the people in the floaty chair's, even advanced technology doesn't eliminate the vagueries of time and culture's that don't think they need to understand the founder's of their society. That sound's like something the Borg would say...

Alien origin thought experiment.
No,you've just explained, in English, why we need to feed, not what it feels like to be hungry. Imagine an alien absorbs light directly through their skin, so their version of hunger is a tingle in their upper-flerman. So even if you were able to convey the fact that you need to eat, they'd just shine a torch on you, while you starve.

The next pandemic : What have we learned ?
Maybe he's the first... What can you learn from that?

The next pandemic : What have we learned ?
If there was just one person on Earth who had covid, how would we know the threat to the rest of us?

Human Rights in a pandemic
We look for a benevolent dictator as suggested by Socrates, failing that we hope for the best and try not too kill anyone.

Human Rights in a pandemic
We can never know when we cross the event horizon, but we can wear a seat belt. With such strong push-back against sensible measures, such as mask wearing and vaccination, I think the tipping point is in our rear view mirror. Fundamentally, human rights in a pandemic is no different to any other time; we're not allowed to kill, through action or inaction. If that requires a stick, then so be it; even if we'd all prefer a carrot. Evolution won't let you do that...

Alien origin thought experiment.
We need energy to exist...we get that energy from the Sun fundamentally, and via food as an extension. Without that energy we hunger and die. That applies to any living organism. Our advanced Alien friends would know that. So why would we need to explain hunger via maths? So, no you can't... 😉 What if they're deaf or don't own a record player? Unlikely because, they can't get to us or because they don't exist? No it doesn't https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemosynthesis...
