Humanity, Post Humanity, A.I & Aliens
The only way we know that another human is thinking, is because of relative data in our memory bank's, so we can only really tell when a child is conscious, is when the child has enough relative data in order to communicate with an adult and be understood; a task that they are far more capable of with another child, of a similar age and a similar culture. I can't remember the name of the philosopher that postulated, that even if a lion could speak our language, there wouldn't be enough relative data for us to understand it, or it us. Other than on the most basic level, like we have with our trained pet's.

How does a placebo work?
I think it's safe to assume, on this site, that we all agree that the placebo effect is real, and that it depends on deception. By which I mean our subjective expectation of the effectiveness of the medication (sugar pill) we're given. But a recent (small) study, in which the patients were told that they'd be given a sugar pill, the results were almost the same as deceptive trial; one of the patients suffering from severe IBS, was medically trained and knew a sugar pill would have no medical benefit, but she took them anyway; not only was her IBS symptoms gone, but when she ran out of pills, the symptoms returned almost over night. Anyone care to take a stab at a possible explanation?

Paradox? (split from Is FTL actually possible?)
This reminds me of the film about how Turing cracked the enigma code (can't remember the title), it's not enough to just crack the code, you have to pretend that you haven't. Causality, in any buggers language, is inevitable; you can't change what you've already done, because that would be a paradox and a paradox is the very definition of impossible. If what you say is true, all the terrorist could do is sit and watch the video.

Humanity, Post Humanity, A.I & Aliens
That's certainly the most likely way to a machine consciousness, but how would we know?

What is the Purpose of Life ?
There's nothing more interesting than the soul, whatever word you choose to describe it. There's nothing more valuable than the soul; yet everyday we choose to ignore it and damage it, because we think money/status is more valuable, than being content.

Paradox? (split from Is FTL actually possible?)
Given the context of my post's is a paradox, can you explain how writing it down makes it true; FLT for example, would be made possible by "star wars", with that logic.

That's also true of an ant hill, which is also not intelligent; humans think outside of the box everyday.

Paradox? (split from Is FTL actually possible?)
Does that mean it's possible?

Paradox? (split from Is FTL actually possible?)
Is a paradox actually possible, outside of our brain?

Humanity, Post Humanity, A.I & Aliens
Can you explian exactly how that is thinking beyond it's programming? My lawnmower isn't intelligent because it knows how short to cut the grass and it's next-door to useless if it does so randomly, because it would take me ages to mow the lawn at the right height... Absolutely, but we will still be left with two piles, done incredibly quickly and accurately, one of chaff and one of wheat; but it will be the human that decides to eat from the wrong pile...

What is the Purpose of Life ?
Sometimes, a metaphor shouldn't be taken literally. π

AI is far more likely to benefit humanity, than defeat it; for example, there are 10 to the power of 80 atoms in the universe, but there are 10 to the power of 300 proteins available from those atoms and AI is very good at sorting the wheat from the chaff.

What is the Purpose of Life ?
I think of it as macro scale DNA (the self, the essence of me), constantly being damaged by almost everything, including oneself (@Pepe).

Yes you do... Like I say, "is no-one reading my signature?"???

You've certainly slipped past an answer... π

What exactly does constitute a sustainable lifestyle? And we have enough history to know why Trump and his cohorts, are just wrong...

Growth has nothing to do with it, because the economy will grow with it, as proven by history, and fair share is a purely political issue. Niether need be a problem, but "Houston, we have a problem"... I feel like the only real response to any argument, for some sort of status quo approach to this problem, is to flash them my signature, with a cheeky hint of more. "as that they who are about mee, and see my state, may have caused it to toll for mee, and I know not that." I'm starting to feel like no one even reads my signatureπ

What three wishes.
The djinn might try and wriggle out of it by making the schools bullet proof and impossible to enter with a gun. But that's ok, we get 3 goes... I wish the school mass shootings in American, would stop. The fact that you all find this question funny, in the general philosophy forum, is very interesting. I'm not sure what to make of it. π€

What three wishes.
I wish the school mass shootings in American, would stop. I think that would have the djinn stumped, it would have to severely limit gun ownership and the number guns per owner and the number of bullets in the clip, at the very least; and how could that possibly be it be twisted to backfire on the wishee?

Are UAPs/UFOs finally being taken seriously?
Indeed, Ultimately it's a message in a bottle, if the bottle is properly corked. For instance, as previously discussed, we've been sending out radio waves for X number of year's, none of which is discernable by Voyager, because the universe is full of noise...

What three wishes.
The djinn would grant your wish with a lotto win, it covers your dream without impinging your families level of comfort; but the national lottery only has one real winner, the national lottery. Because it's a voluntary tax on the overly optomistic, which harms the very people you seek to help; and even if you win every week, you couldn't help more people than it harm's. Would your second wish put that right? I wish that too, but don't you get angry when your honest opinion is treated with derision? I'm only human after all...
