however, the law says he had every right to be there; just as the protesters did. Even all the claims of his gun being illegal are false; because of a mix-up regarding barrel length, his gun was legally owned, and allowed to be carried. Grosskreutz, one of his victims, who pointed a gun at Ritterhouse, was carrying his illegally, as he is a convicted felon. Freeland, one of the other victims, kicked Ritterhouse in the head. This, all according to witness reports and testimony. I don't think it's a stretch that the jury believed he felt threatened. Sure, he is/was a stupid kid, who orchestrated his own peoblems; I think his mentality makes him dangerous and he should be in jail, and not on the streets. But according to the law, as it currently stands, the jury returned the right verdict. Stage a protest to have the laws changed, if you must. Just don't allow any idiots carrying weapons to attend.

I just responded to your claim that racism is not a big deal in Italy as it is in the US. I certainly don't want to censor your opinion. And this is the first time I've been accused of being in an echo chamber and repeating 'already approved ideas'. Usually I'm on the other end of the accusation.

Earth is dimming due to climate change:
I believe I addressed that. Sorry I wasn't more clear. I did not mean it to be an infrared herring 😄 .

oh sure. Then why toss bananas on the field when M Balotelli and M Kean are playing ? BTW, 'Benvenuto paesano'.

Jordan Peterson's ideas on politis
That assessment is your opinion; and you are entitled to it. ( as you haven't provided any evidence for your assertions ) All JP wants, is to be able to have his own opinion. ( and not be told what his opinion is, by others ) Why are you so offended by other's ideas ? Cosmic horror ? Indifferent and hostile universe ? Yeah, somebody's brain is broken ... You see what I mean about Psychology not being a science, CharonY? Does the garbage posted in this video have any scientific basis ?

A 'birth' is an action; a 'dragon' is an object. They cannot be the same thing. ( IOW, now you're just being annoying ) True, but he is abiding by that other great piece of American law. He is 'standing his ground'. And, if you can walk away, it cannot be labelled 'self defense' ( don't know the details, so I don't know if that also applies to the Chrystul Kizer case ). There seem to be a whole lot of laws that need to be changed ( or amended ) in the US. The fact that the Republicans have decided to make Ritterhouse their 'poster boy', is further evidence of the insanity that passes for 'normal' these days.

Earth is dimming due to climate change:
What I said ... And what your link says ... The only difference is that I provided the mean wavelength of the energy arriving and leaving the Earth. Or do you need me to explain in simpler words ... And what I previously said ... There seems to be a pandemic of reading miscomprehension affecting Forum members. Have you guys been vaccinated against that ?

I don't want to re-argue the trial, because I think Ritterhouse should be in jail, and because I don't think that was Stringy's intent with this thread. If you watched or read about the trial, INow you know that the prosecution argued for murder, while the defense argued that Rittehouse was protecting himself. The jury was not convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that it was murder, and/or, they believed that it was self-defense. So obviously, the jury thought what the victims were doing was not simply 'breaking windows', but actually threatening Ritterhouse with serious harm, if not death. IOW, what they were doing is very relevant, and the likely cause for the decision handed down. Don't blame me for what the jury thought ( or your confusion 🙂 I hear that's common with old age ) Agreed, but probably much less than 30 seconds. You openly carry a gun, legal or not, in Canada, get into an altercation, and shoot someone, it is murder. The fact you were carrying the gun is intent.
-
Rittenhouse
But a jury of your peers just said it wasn't murder ... So your analogy is irrelevant. I say your peers, because in Canada, carrying a gun, as Ritterhouse did, would make him automatically guilty. Why would you have a gun, if you didn't intend to use it ? But of course, there's that darned 2nd Amendment ...

Earth is dimming due to climate change:
Not quite. Earth receives radiation from the Sun centered on the visible wavelength ( roughly 4000o C ). This provides heating of the Earth. The Earth then re-radiates this heat, but at a much lower mean temperature, approx. 20o C ( infrared/microwave wavelength ). The atmospheric molecules of CO2 ( and others ) vibrate and bend at this characteristic wavelength. It is then re-emitted by the CO2/greenhouse gas, and up to 50 % can head back to the Earth. What greenhhouse gases do, is obstruct the planet's ability to radiate heat away
-
Rittenhouse
Soooo ... Not relevant to you ?
-
Rittenhouse
Is that a rebuttal or agreement ? I thought that's what I said ... Did you miss the bolded part ?
-
Earth is dimming due to climate change:
Excuse me for injecting some science here, but the Earth re-radiates in the infrared range ( black body radiation of 20o C ) The same infrared range that is absorbed by water vapor molecules and CO2 molecules in the atmosphere and re-radiated back towards the Earth. That is how greenhouse gases work; to trap re-radiated planetary heat back on itself. Unless we are measuring the infrared illumination of the Moon by the Earth, those numbers may ( or may not ) be meaningless, in relation to atmospheric CO2 levels. It may be just a result of changing surface cover, such as melting ice, vegetation covering, city sprawl, etc. All these may indirectly result from CO2 levels, and directly from climate change.

Definitely agree with you CharonY, If he was black he would have never made it to trial; he would most likely have been shot in the street by police. But I don't see how it is partisan to mention that the victims of the shooting, although they didn't deserve to die, were there to riot and raise hell, just as Ritterhouse was, Stringy. In any other place, this might have escalated to a beating; when people are armed, it escalates to shooting and deaths. I don't mean to deral this thread, and make it about guns, Stringy. But I don't think a protest that might escalate to a riot is anywhere guns should be allowed. We've seen it countless times, people ( usually right wingnuts ) showing up at protests in full army gear and armed to go to war; even if not used, guns are an intimidation to the oppostion. Nothing good can come of allowing ideological people to open carry firearms to a 'confrontational' event.

Jordan Peterson's ideas on politis
See, now I would think personality traits play a big role in social interactions, dominance behaviour and related things. But what do I know, I'm a Physicist ( ... is good for the gander, or biologist 🙂 ) Let me lay down on your couch and tell you about my childhood ...

This verdict, and trial, are just another data point in the 'crazy' that passes for 'normal' in the US these days. And am I missing something ? I thought the people he shot were all white, and brandishing various weapons ( a skateboard even ). If someone intends to do me harm, or kill me, does it matter if I run them down with a car, although I don't have a licence and can't legally drive ? The problem, other than the farcical trial, is thinking that it's OK to carry assault rifles to a protest which is escalating to a riot. ( The victims of the shooting were not fine upstanding citizens; not that it matters, but I don't think thy were there for a peaceful protest either )

Jordan Peterson's ideas on politis
Easy, INow. It seems that when JP discussess biology he is rightfully condemned by all for being outside of his area of expertise, and CharonY does point out some valid objections to his understanding of biology. Yet when he discussess human behaviour, and our thinking/emotional state, an area where he is a prominent accredited expert, being a much published Psychologist, you guys still insist he doesn't know what he is talking about. When did you, and the others, get your degree in Psychology ?? ( what's good for the goose, ... 🙂 )

Not just conservatives, Phi, although sane voices, advocating for gun control, are mostly left. When we last discussed the problem of guns in the US, some very liberal thinking members of this very Forum, objected to gun control. It is one subject which is not as politically polarized in the general population. There are roughly 400 million guns among the US' 340 million people, and only about a million are registered. It is an American problem, not a right or left wing issue. ( seems to me, an 'amendment' is already a change; why the big resistance against another change ? )

Holy cr*p ! 6.2 % ? Well, that makes my raise meaningless. ( thank God I don't have a mortgage, once they start trying to control inflation )

Bottle rinsing
Have a friend who recently got a Legionella infection. Not pleasant; His kidneys shut down and he underwent dialysis several times, before treatment rid the infection and kidney function returned. But he does have other underlying health issues, which could have contributed. The facility where I work, being European owned, has to test safety showers/eyewashes for Legionella contamination ( mandatory in Europe ), and one of our buildings tested positive. When we did our weekly checks on them, we had to run them for a minute or two, to clear out the bacteria, until they tested negative. ( that's the tie in to rinsing )

Question about Basics of Gravity
Would you say that this is the reason why gravity is modelled in 2 ways - spacetime warping and/or particle exchange? No, but it is the reason gravity is not renormalizable and can't be easily persuaded to play well with Quantum Field theory.
-
Gravity wells determine orbital plane?
Gravity wells are spherically symmetric, and don't impart any particular orientation to orbits. Conservation of angular momentum is what determines orbits and planes. That being said, multiple gravity wells, depending on configuration of course, will affect orbits and their planes.

Did the end of the Cold War make us more greedy and self centered?
Well, for one, people tended to believe their Government. There were no anti-vaxxers then. That's one better aspect, at least.

Error bars apply to the 'experiment', not the 'experimenter', Stringy. But I understand your analogy 😄 .

I am not making the claim; we are examining JP's claim. I did read your response in the other thread about serotonin and anger, and I agree with your assessment, as it seems to re-enforce something I previously said ...
