as in time honored tradition, and to accompany such challenges as the: http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2863 and: http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3907 Now it`s time turn your thinking towards Lightbulbs! The Challenge is make your own Light bulb, it must be powerful enough to read by in a totally dark room, and be powered Electrically (so No flasks of Luminol, or Isotopes or Magnesium Flares!). it must last (giving off book readable light), for a Min of 10 minutes also. you can use whatever Voltage/Current you like AC or DC. Obviously the Less Power and Brighter the Light for that power the Better! Picture (as…

this is just a bit of fun for anyone that wishes to play. the challenge and the rules are simple you have to make your own battery(s), enough to keep a simple 4mm red LED lit for as long as possible. it must be a stand alone device with no other power input (so a rechargable battery is out of the question), and weigh no more than 250 grams. the timer starts as soon as the LED is lit, and stops as soon as it can longer be seen as lit in a dark room, the object is see who`s LED stays lit the longest honesty is essential obviously. please post your results here along with methods used, and Good Luck

  3. here`s my next Challenge to all you Experimenteers out there, Summer time is comming up shortly and so I give you all fair notice! your challenge is to make a solar cooker, it`s to be made from scrap material or regular household materials. your job is to cook AND EAT! a hotdog sausage using only the power of direct sunlight. vegetarians may ellect a meat eating friend or use the Veggy equivalent (Quorn or Soya based hot dogs). the winner will be the one with the most original and functional design that works the best. IF! you wish to go further or better you need not limit this to a hotdog sausage, by all means, if you can do a Pizza, then do a Pizza ) Pi…

  4. A project is not the same as an experiment. In a project, you work towards a pre-defined goal. Any project in any science is welcome here. If you have built a nice device, have written a nice piece of software, or have achieved a nice result after a thorough investigation, please let us know about it. In this section we do not want oneliners like "I have built a rocket, look how awesome it is". Threads on projects should give detailed descriptions on how you proceeded, such that others can benefit from the info. Discussions on how to achieve a certain goal also are very helpful. Helping each other with projects adds even more fun to working on them. I also want to…

I don't know if this is the right forum but as I am an amateur physicist this one seems appropriate. My threads, much to my frustration usually get shut down and I don't think it's very much in the spirit of science, especially because it addresses a very serious subject. I may be an amateur but that doesn't stop me from understanding and solving problems within physics. I don't have the math but I do have a simple abstraction that explains numerous things about the laws of the universe. At present, our current models just assume the laws of the universe kick in at the big bang, there is no explanation for why this happens, it just magically does. You might as well s…

Hi I am involved with a local STEM café and discovery centre, in Torbay. We have a unit thing, that consists of a container to hold sand, this is connected to an upright and a xbox kinect, and a screen, the idea is that you fill the container with sand, and the kinect can scan the contours of the sand and display this on the screen. Rather than using play sand, the proprietor wants to use Kinetic sand, as this is expensive to buy as we need about 200kg (container is quite large) he would like to try and make some. I have looked up some instructions to make this, but many of the instructions seem to use perishable food products such as corn starch. We don…

This is Pyded, a research lab, for amateur experiments and more. Why do we call ourselves an "Online Center"? Let's start with the beginning. Here, we have a lot of amateurs. What does 1, a small number, + 1, another small number, form? 2, of course, and that is a bigger number. Just like 5 amateurs make a proffesional. Here we gather to get information about science. Magnets, air quality, and everything else. We prefer to have information in the form of an .txt file. We have 1 programmer, and that is me, the creator of this, Edward. I gather information from scripting, mostly in Python. Get some code or information, and put it here! Let's make this idea a…

  9. Hi all So, there I was watching how it’s made and I thought… Hey, I wonder if I can harness the power of that river that runs down the bottom of our Garden. I live in North West UK where it rains a lot. During heavy rain the river at the end of my garden flows very fast. I say ‘river’. It is about 2 feet wide. A man could just about put one foot either side of this river without getting wet feet. In dry periods the river is a slow running stream but in rain it is very fast flowing. About 1 deep and 3 feet across. I just wanted to know if I could make electricity? So, you guys can probably see that I am a total newbie. Any advice here? thanks all.

I am just going to ask a few questions with regard to using Lithium metal found in batteries, or at least going on this video below that I found on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGDkiUAwxRs&feature=youtu.be First things first, I fully acknowledge that doing what is suggested in the video is dangerous however being as this section is for home chemistry perhaps I can ask some general questions. 1. Lithium metal is available to schools via education supply stores but I am guessing not to home chemists 2. If supplied it is stored under oil or oil film, I would assume this is to prevent reaction with the air or I would assume any moisture…

  11. I want to try this for fun, and possibly to trick my friends a little... Thought I'd turn to some people who knew what they were doing first as the video looks a little sketchy and I don't want to electrocute myself. Thanks!

  12. First of all, sorry for my bad English, I am from Austria, so it's not my mother tongue. I know that an ordinary superconductor could not levitate in Earth's magnetic field because its weight is higher than the force that Earth's magnetic field can carry. But the simple solution is to use superconductors that are hollow inside. This would drastically reduce their weight without reducing their lifting capacity. Even smarter would be to cover a light and solid material with a thin layer or foil of some superconducting material. To increase the stability of the object even more, you can choose a stable structure like a sphere and use struts in an optimized way. This wou…

  16. Started by Joshcitylife,

Im trying to build an engine which runs off of water using compounded solar energy to heat/transfer energy. This will be used to create enough continuous energy to run an engine. This would mean that we can use the sun as energy to fuel a fossil-free engine . Yes we have used sun before for solar panels and etc…. However I believe I have found a method of compounding sunlight in order to generate a level of energy which is high enough to create an effective propulsion system. However, I need funds to generate this, Ive created diagrams which I have mailed to myself and saved. If anyone would like to team up to create this I believe we can!

My name is XxEarthxX and I have a long ongoing battle with Computers and Binary! I have been steadliy working on a Project that involves PC binary and its Powering on to reprogram the PC to run a Positive rate at 360 to Exact time Module Specs use at 365 on their Universal standard format, while wording what I have been working on for 8+years has become difficult to word. So I will finish my introduction and attempt to Explain my Problems with current PCs being sold …

Hello, I was doing some google searching regarding sending something into space / to the moon and I came across a now-closed thread on these boards. I know it's a far-fetched idea but I'm interested to know what you all think it would take to send something to the moon. Here are just a few questions I have: - How hot would the object become exiting our atmosphere? - How cold would the object become once in space? - How would you calculate the trajectory of the object to reach the moon? - How long would such a journey take? - How much power would you need in order to reach the moon? - Would you need constant power or could you tap into gravity…

  20. Started by RevI,

I am an Indian inventor. For a long time, I am continuing personal research about a theoretical machine that can extract atmospheric heat and convert that into useful power. Recently, while searching net, I have found out that the necessary machinery is already available in market. In short, the machine now can be built easily. It's a combination of a market available blower with a new kind of turbine. The turbine has already been built and tested. A 1 meter diameter turbine can generate 3 kW output at 8 m/s wind velocity. While a market available 1 meter diameter and 50% efficient blower can generate 8 m/s airflow at the expense of just 500 W. I now want to further …

  21. I made a project involving voice recognition on a raspberry pi so you can speak a password to open a box. Long story short, my DC-DC step up converter to power the latch seems to be super unreliable. I am wondering if some of my trouble is related to how I have it wired up and if someone could suggest a better approach. I have 2 battery packs (https://www.adafruit.com/product/354) wired in parallel. Those are powered off a charger (https://www.adafruit.com/product/390) So output of this board, and the two batteries, are connected to the main positive and negative lines at the edge of my PCB. Attached to those lines I have a boost converter (https://www.adaf…

I have a wire mesh waste paper basket and my eyes confuse when moving my position while the basket is still as the two mesh layers overlap to create confusing patters as my eyes attempt to focus, which is most noticeable the farther away observed. It's nothing new, but what is this phenomena known as ?

Hi, My name is Anne. I will be posting a sleep expirment on here that I am trying on myself. I will be getting 2 hours of sleep every night for a year. And doccumeting what happens. I am 20 years old, 5 foot 2, 144 pounds, and am generally healthy. You may ask why I am doing this. I am doing this because there are not many studies on people doing this type of expirmentand I want to try and see what happens. Tonight will be my first night doing this expirment. I will be going to bed at 12:00 AM and waking up at 2:00AM. I hope you will read my posts and give me tips If you have any!🙂 …

  24. Started by Photon Guy,

I am doing research into colored lights for this project I want to do. When you switch on an ordinary flashlight it emits a plain white light which is all the colors but Im interested in lights that only emit light of one color. Now at the most basic level having such a light can be very simple, all you have to do with your flashlight is put something on it to make it a certain color, for instance if you want your flashlight to be red you could just fit a red balloon over the end of the flashlight and it will make the light red. To the best of my knowledge that works by filtering, the red balloon filters out all the colors from the flashlight except red and so you've got …

  25. The project will be testing which metal surface is the best at reducing bacteria growth. I would really appreciate puns about germs, metals, or both. I was originally going to give it a boring yet informative title, but decided to make it eye catching for style points. Thanks in advance!
