if you give yeast sugar and warm water it will start reproducing. If you put higher voltage though it it will act as a semi-conductor. It is really awesome. http://www.wprld-of-a-new.comuf.com

I did a science experiment for school. I added 100ml of water in beaker1 and 75ml of water and 25 ml of lemon juice in beaker2, 50ml of water and 50ml of lemon juice in beaker 3 and beaker 4 was 100ml of lemon. Here were the results: Beaker 1: .542 Beaker 2: .504 Beaker 3: .543 Beaker 4: .567 When lemon juice was added(in beaker2) the voltage went down but when more lemon juice was added it went a bit higher, can someone explain why this happened in scientifically? I searched alot over the internet and could only find this: The lemon juice contains a big amount of acidic juice, which in scientific terminology is an electrolyte. The acid in the electrolyte bre…

I am building perpetual generator which I am copying from video I saw at http://www.wonderhowto.com - pepetual generator. I superglued 12 magnets around a plastic lid and by placing a seperate magnet a little distacne away the top would spin. the top is place on tip of toy generator. My problem is I cannot get the top to spin. I was supposed to use nano magnets but could not find them so I used neldymium magnets. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. this is for my 5th grade science project. Thank-you Jack

  6. I've been searching the web for a while and have come across a few but wanted to check here to see what you guys would recommend. I like burning things and blowing stuff up. Obviously not lethal, but a nice bang would be cool. One example would be green fire. I did that for a Chem project last year. Anything along those lines would be great. Any ideas?

Hi, I'm really interested with how memory works, I ask you, to try these experiment for one week, let your friends try it or those close to you and observe if these exercises improved your memory or their memory, even for a little bit. Objective: "A healthy mind = a healthy body." "Good focus, concentration, understanding and memory." "5 minutes of memory exercise per day is all it takes." The Hypothesis is that, memory is like a muscle, if you exercise it it'll be stronger. So let's do our best to disprove this hypothesis. (P.s. I do believe that a the mind works like a muscle, this is for the sake of being objective). --oOo-- I'll be incl…

hey. so many organisms have an adaptation where they supply extra glucose to their blood and the water in their cells seep into vacuoles in the cells and out of the cells to stop any damage from the crystalization of the water due to freezing from happening.{please correct me if im wrong} its called cryogenisis. im sure you guys already know this but i thought itd be a good starter to this post. i know that wood frogs just turn into blocks over the winter and then later thaw out with the oncoming of spring. and many other insects and eggs like mantis eggs and some fruit flys. im using fruit flys for this one. i will to have 4 sets of subjects and 1 control.i w…

  9. hey, im probably one of the first ones to say that im totally against mumbo jumbo crap, and i have a very scientific based mind. so i was wondering if anyone knows about any experements actually trying to varify the existence of god, or the explanation of how karma could work? im actually thinking about doing some myself right now if no one has. i mean, im not spiritual or anything like that, but i do notice many things that suggest the existence of karma, or god in some way, wich could be coincidenses, but the odds are high. so, id like to have an already done opinion free test. like, back in middle school, i remember running away, well, prior to that it was sto…

I'm trying to make thermite; what do I need to make it? From what I've read it said just mix aluminum powder with iron(III) oxide (rust). Is this correct? I just want to watch it burn. PS-also, which equation is better? Both are for thermite, but which one is the better... um... thermite? Fe2O3+2Al -->2Fe+Al2O3+heat 3Fe3O4 + 8Al --> 9Fe + 4Al2O3 + heat

Two days ago I make one ordinary experiment: Iodine solution and Ammonia I've got a black precipitate, then I decided to put in the jar Na2CO3 solution. Then I added CH3COOH. After that reaction NaHCO3 + CH3COOH → CH3COONa + H2O + CO2, the whole thing became ORANGE!? Have any one have an idea what have happend? I am pretty sure that there is hydroiodic acid (HI), but what else and the main question: WHY IT'S ORANGE?

Ok I did an experiment to find the dissociation enthalpy of N204 and measured the equillibrium vapour pressure relative to the atmosphere. Plotted the graph of result (plot was ln(K) against 1/T*10^3/K-1) and got a straight line with the negative slope which equals -delta H/R(gas constant). I am getting 53 KJ mol-1 as my enthalpy of dissociation. So i was wondering why is it that becuase from my calculation from entalpies of formation of N2O4 and NO2 from the equation ; N2O4 <-------> 2N02 I get 57.3 KJmol-1. My experimental value isn't that off the theoratical value but i am wondering why it is 4 kJmol-1 short. One reson i can think of is that NO2 used isn'…

here`s a thread for any Curious Chemists that want to try a little bit of Organic chem, the idea is to make and share recipes for Esters and TRY to describe the smells if you can. I`ve just had a go myself and made Ethyl Benzoate, it smells almost good enough to eat! simply 5ml of 100% Ethanol (it should work with the 95% too), added to Benzoic Acid (I added roughly half a T`spoon (or 2 spatulas) and then 4 drops of Conc Sulphuric acid. interestingly the benzoic acid dissolves in the ethanol 100%, but when you add the sulphuric (esp in one spot) a white solid forms but then dissolves again? next gently heat it, when the vapor starts to rise and condense half…

Hello everyone, Here's a link to my webpage, where you can see some images about smelting iron from local low-grade bog iron ore, just like they did in the iron age 2000 years ago (here in europe). The site is in danish - sorry - but there are plenty of images, and more coming up in this weekend. Usually I spend 20-30 kilos of ore + 30 kilos of charcoal and get a raw iron bloom of 4-6 kilos. http://www.jernmager.dk/projekter.php Unfortunately, I still have some technical issues to deal with. I've posted some in this thread - please take a look at it. http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=36161 cheers, Michael

My AP Biology teacher and I are doing an experiment together, in which we are attempting to answer the question: DO TEENS GET INTO MORE AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENTS THAN ADULTS DUE TO CELL PHONE USE, EATING WHILE DRIVING, LISTENING TO MUSIC, ETC.? However, there are not very many people interested in answering questions for the good of science in my community, so I am having an extremely difficult time gathering data. Then yesterday, I came up with this brilliant idea: I would find an active science forum and post my survey there, in an attempt to gain more data. That's where you guys (and women) come in. Your forum appears to be the most active of its kind on the internet, a…

Preparation of Chlorates by Disproportionation of Calcium Hypochlorite in Aqueous Solution Aside from their famous (perhaps infamous is more appropriate) use in pyrotechnics, chlorates have a fairly rich chemistry and make a valuable addition to the chemical inventory of the amateur experimenter. Iodic acid and iodates can be prepared by the reaction of iodine with solutions of chlorate acidified by nitric acid. Reduction of chlorates with hydrochloric acid generates ClO2 (generally mixed with varying amounts of Cl2 depending on stoichiometry), which makes for an interesting small scale demonstration (Do not scale up!). They can be used in place of nitrates as the oxi…

  19. recharging non-automotive (lithium) batteries with an automotive trickle charger- Does anyone know if you can safely do this/ what are the risks? Specifically, I mean using a solar powered 2 Watt charger to charge up a 12 volt lithium battery for a cordless drill, but I would also like to know if in general, you can do this, for other applications, like recharging AA batteries. I have lost the charger, do not want to fork out for another one, since I hardly ever use it. Side question- if indeed this is possible and safe, is there any way to establish which is the positive terminal, which is negative if it is not labelled?

has anyone here ever made Biodiesel before? after a few attempts that failed (I made Great soap!), 3`rd time lucky! I`m working on a recipe: 100g virgin rapeseed oil 23.8g EtOH 1.43g KOH the EtOH has to be 100% pure alcohol and the KOH has to be 100% dry also, any moisture and you will make Soap! my Latest attempt at transestrification seems to have shown a reaction that I`v not seen in the others. upon mixing the oil with the Potassium ethoxide with a magnetic stirrer in a flask, it was turbid, and then about 2-3 mins later the color suddenly changed to perfectly clear and a very deep Orange, about 2 mins later it went slightly turbid again but …

  21. Shooting Sparks from the fingertips, wouldn't that be cool. http://www.lateralscience.co.uk/pyromagic/sparks.html The only problem is that the directions are a little bit unclear, but we can solve that problem. This design is good, but lets improve it. Does anyone have any other ideas for such a device? I was thinking something as simple as shooting out powdered chlorates and sugar or similar from a tube under the arm (in the sleeve) and then having some sulfuric acid on the fingertips (maybe coated with teflon?? lol, this is sounding stupider and stupider) um, I don't know, but it sounded really good when I was thinking about it Regardless Wh…

Ive heard that a - or several - bee stings could cure rheumatism and osteoarthritis. Is it possibe? If yes, could it be the venoms composition or what? Anyhow, Im posting this thread in the experiment section because I thought this could be a good experiment for maybe next years science-fair but Im wondering how I could do such an experiment. Is it possible on rats? I dont know much on reasearch and experimentation stuff. The way it works for example... With what material you can do that and all... and that is why Im asking... Thanks in advance.

  23. hey all, this is my first time posting here, and i could really use some help! my friends and i are fifteen, and we have to do a science research project next year. we'll be getting a university professor for a mentor, but we're not really sure of our boundaries. We would really like to do a project on microbiology; on immunity and vaccines and the like, but our teacher tells us it's too advanced. Recently, we thought of doing something oncology related, but we're not really sure what field we can go into. Will chemo be too difficult to research on for us? Would really appreciate any ideas/advice! Thank you!

after reading some of the difficulties making Magnetite in other threads, I took up the challenge of finding a more Simple and near foolproof method that`s also much cheaper! rather than using the commonly known FeCl3 method, I`m going an alternative route. you need only 2 readily available chems for this, Iron Sulphate (FeSO4) that you can get from almost Any gardening store as Moss killer for lawns, it`s also pretty easy to make if you wanted to. and simple Washing Soda (Na2CO3), if for some bizzare reason you can get this then use baking soda that`s been heated to a high heat for a while, this will convert it to washing soda also. here: washing soda on th…

My first post hope I do not get shot down in flames. I recently read an article about the roughly short time needed to petrify wood given the right mixtures of silca and a few other chemicals along with heat. Could this be done by using household equipment along with some safe chemical purchases and if so what would be needed? Cheers in advance DIYJono
