Hi! This is my first post here. I am a digital artist who develops interactive learning for science and engineering subjects, hence my ID. Today, I built a simple 'cloud chamber' to detect atomic particle tracks--a photo is below. The particle source I used is a small button of Am-241. Most of the tracks I observed seem to be either straight (alpha?) or curved (beta particles?). The one exception is the bulls-eye pictured below, with two lobes (arrows)--two particles of opposite charge? I have never seen such a track in a cloud chamber in all I have seen--do you have any idea what it is? The picture below is a composite of several shots taken of the trails. …

My sister's B-Day is coming up and I want to surprise her by forging a Meteor Knife Set for her (I'm not really gonna be the one to forge it,I'll just buy the materials and give my dad's bladesmith the design for the Knives.) My dad gave me a relatively medium stock of metals last year and now I want to use most of it for my sister. I need suggestions on how much Iridium,Platinum,Iron,Chromium,Nickel and Carbon I need to create a very great, very strong and corrosive resistant knife set, any suggestions? I already bought a diamond hone knife sharpener for the knife set. One more thing,What's the best kind of light weight knife I can use when a Man Rabies (Zombie) …

Hello, Thanks for reading this, I created a automatic airgun design with my friend and i want to check the design to see if it works. I tried keeping it as simple as it gets but without loosing any performance. I attached a photo demonstrating the design. If there's a part that you don't understand please reply and i'll explain it. The point of this post is to see if my design works. Thanks for your attention

Seeing as it's Victoria Day weekend, I decided to carry out a little experiment with a firework. I've always been fond of amateur pyrotechnics, so I decided to see what would happen if I put the core of a simple 'Air Bomb' firework wrapped in electrical tape, just to make sure it didn't somehow fall apart, into a can with some sparkler powder, and then light it. For any of you who don't know what an 'Air Bomb' is, it's basically a really simple firework where you light the fuse, something shoots out of the end, which a few seconds later makes a loud bang, and that's it. So I figured that more or less the same would happen here. What actually happened, however, I can't…

This experiment may reveal a naturally occurring self-organizing mechanism that resides in the vacuum of space. These structures are constantly formed and maintained by celestial objects throughout the universe. Further discovery will allow the control and movement of an object without the application of force. This experiment only reveals its basic existence. The experiment requires a glass ball, "crystal ball" used as a second mass in addition to the experimenter. I used a 6" (150mm) diameter ~ 9 lb (4Kg) ball. There is a sequence to the experiment that has to be followed or else I am fairly certain it will fail. It also needs to be performed on solid ground - no ba…

Hello everyone, Focusing on time-chance rationality. The intention is to try and graph out decision making with reference to risk aversion. Here it is: Time Rationality Test Results appear once you answer this question. Note that most of the numbers keep appearing differently for everyone, and even the options switch places. Let me know what you think.

Hey guys, I'm going to be building a type of coil which I believe is capable of concentrating magnetic force waves with more laser beam like precision just figured I'd start a thread on the idea. I'll post some pictures of my experimentation and maybe throw up some diagrams as I draw them. If anybody has any questions, suggestions or experience they'd like to share with me, I'll be constructing my first proof of concept in the next 2 days. My goal with the first device is to accomplish beam like characteristics in magnetic force. Here's a 0.8 Watt Electromagnet for you to look at in the mean time, it will be my point of reference when comparing efficiencies of …

First let me say I'm under no illusions - this is silly, but that's what makes it fun. If it works we might all save a fortune on leather items! Introduction I bought a stylish PU leather jacket (fake leather) online as a total gamble, not expecting much. In all honestly I have been surprised and impressed with how good it looks as a jacket, but the material reflects light too brightly, giving the game away, cheapening its appearance significantly. The jacket was so cheap that faced with the dilemma of sending it back, keeping it as is and probably never wearing it, or carrying out an experiment on it to dim the reflection (risking ruining it), I'm going to exper…

Hi every body I am a teen, and am a junior in highshool. i saw this website for the first time and liked it so i registered on it, so that i can get some help since i m doing this for the graduation project. ( i do have some electronics knowledge so i m not a newb) I have seen alot of peopl do this kind of project so its not really exceptional, except nobody did it for school tho so... . Now the problem is on all the weather balloon project websites they used the components that are old...really really old, and with the technology nowdays they are useless for me...(note: please dont tell me some thing real expensive that goes above my budget....lets say my bu…

Hi all, I,m plannig to conduct one experiment, but before that I wanted it confirm whether my idea has got some scence. My query is lets consider we have 3 types of system 1.Closed air tank at 10 bar pressure. It will have pressure* volume = 10*105*1= 1000 KJ energy. 2. Water tank of volume 1 cum and height of water 1 m. It will have 5.04*h2 = 5.04 KJ (h= water head pressure) 3. Now lets say we have 2 cum of closed volume containing water of 1 cum and 1 cum air at 10 bar. can I say we have energy in water= 5.01*1002 = 50400 KJ (10 bar=100 m of water) plus when water is out of tank volume of air will be 2 cum at 5 bar. then energy stored in air (conside…

I just saw in my chemistry book this equation: H2O2 +2I− + 2H+---> 2H2O + I2 My question is: If I put table salt (NaCl + KI) in water with some lemon juice/vinegar and hydrogen peroxide, could I get an iodine solution? (of course still containing some of the vingar/juice and Na+, Cl- and K+) Or would I get something else? Or even nothing at all? I would have tried it myself but the hydrogen peroxide I have is old so it's basically water now. Thanks!!

ok so a few days ago, i put some turmeric powder which was a bit old in water. then, i added eau de javel (which is a solution of NaClO and NaCl). the solution turned red. after a while, it became yellow again. could it be some kind of acid-base reaction? because that's what happens when we titrate acid/base solutions: the color of the indicator becomes transparent but then returns to its original color until we reach equivalence. could this be the same?

I am experimenting with using Mica Particles (Pearl essence) to enhance the 3 dimensional effect of Quilted maple. My aim is to lie the particles on the wood grain to follow the contour of the grain and thus enhance the light reflective properties to enhance the effect. Question:- how can I treat the Mica to lie on the wood grain and cure back to its normal consistency ? any help would be appreciated.

So I decided to make sodium acetate at home, just for giggles. So here is the equation : CH3COOH + NaHCO3 → CH3COONa + H2O + CO2 My yield was 27g of sodium acetate which when cooled turned into pretty crystals as expected. But here lies my problem, when I tried to heat it up to turn it back into liquid sodium acetate all the crystals do is pop and hiss and crackle. The melting point of sodium acetate trihydrate is 58o so it should work. My thinking on what happened is I left the crystals out overnight and when I put them on my balance the mass was 24.7. That is a loss of 2.3 grams overnight. So I thought maybe what happened is due to the heat my sodium acetate trihydrat…

Hi! I'm Rafa, a spanish student of industrial engineer and I'm going to do my proyect in order to finish my career. I need a non-newtonian fluid which has next characteristics: It has to be transparent. It has to work a low shear rate (0.003-0.5) s^-1 having a medium-low viscosity (no more than 70 Pa·s more less). I don't know if it will be difficult to be find it, but I need the fluid as soon as possible. Any information, it will be great for me! Thanks so much

I am going investigate a "chicken or the egg"question. Do people watch a certain newsstation due to prior political beliefs or do viewers gain political beliefsfrom watching that particular news station. For example, do conservatives watch FOX News because it is more tailoredto their pre-set beliefs, or do viewers become more conservative because theywatch FOX News? I just don't know how to conduct the experiment itself. What methods can I use to measure beliefs andhow to I keep track? Any assistance is very much appreciated! Thank you for your time!

I have done some basic tests with air being sucked through tubes rough and smooth with rough and smooth inner cores and measuring the head of water at the suction end of a 1400 watt vacuum cleaner with all filters removed. I just wanted to see what effect it has on a engine intake manifold there are some interesting side effects too so don't do it. Outer tubes 42 mm ID 590 mm Length. Inner tubes 33 mm OD 340 mm + 60 mm sticking out and caped off at outside end to increase suction head. A 4.5 mm gap concentric between tubes provided by 3 screws at each end. 1 outer tube roughed up by wire wheel and 1 inner tube as well. The clear tubing and measurement is on…

I have no knowledge whatsoever of how to build design and make use of advanced laser technology. I am home based experimenter in Bristol UK and interested in Robotics. My current project is designing and then building a robot which will have the capability of working inside models using a combination of technologies. The most important ingredient of a successful design is a Locational Position System. So the first problem I have to solve is the development a position co-ordinate system which will enable me to identify, with a high degree of accuracy, the precise position of objects, within a model under construction. Within the model mini robots ar…

Lets say it is possible to apply any temperature to any liquid, then it is possible to turn a portion of that liquid to a gas, or vapor, reaching that portion of the original liquid's boiling temperature. Now because you have the spacific temperature of that portion of the liquid, turning it to a gas, while another portion of the original liquid, remains a liquid, because its boiling temperature is higher, than the portion that just turned to a gas, so it doesn't boil. I did this to gasoline, and got a low pressure white colored gas, that has a boiling temperature far below the boiling temperature of liquid gasoline. In the same process I also get a liquid that is non fl…

So I'm sure most people here know what a Chinese lantern is... I'm wondering if I could get a little parachute to float in the air with just a small, average candle below it. I don't know if the parachute would have to be a certain material, or if just like a cheap plastic would work like those old army men toys used to have. This is a photo of a little metal statue, but it's kinda how I envisioned it (minus the little guy hanging from the bottom). Basically I picture it like one of these army parachute toys, but instead of an army guy there would be a candle there. Would that float? Thanks for any help, I really appreciate it!

I recently came across a YT video showing a proposed substance that when it "comes in contact with air, loses its polar ability and sticks to itself, transforming into solid water spheres." I figure that the best place to get the truth is here, so I have two questions. 1) Is the video giving truthful information, and this experiment is possible? 2) If the answer to question 1 is yes, where is the best place to get Calcium Bicarbonate and Calcium Acetate? (The author of another video states Wal-Mart may carry them, but I have doubts.) YT Videos: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vCeAfKCC2ng and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_kYkFy5-jI&NR=1
