Hi, I am in secondary school studying chemistry. I chair the school's STEM society and am wanting to give a talk and practical on the elephants toothpaste that you may have seen online. Elephants toothpaste is large amounts of oxygen trapped in soap. To make a plume of this, you use hydrogen peroxide and a catalyst that releases the oxygen at an increased rate such as potassium Iodide (iodide ions are our catalyst). I am wanting to give this demonstration to other students and need to work out the volume of 'bubbles' that will be made so that I do not make too much. I will be using 100 volumes H2o2 Also I understand volume as a measurement of con…

I had to change a brake light in my vehicle yesterday. The filament had burned out. A apparent carbon stain was on the inside of the glass bulb which for me begged the question: Where did the carbon come from? The filament is made of elemental tungsten...no carbon compound in it to release carbon when it burns out. There is usually some inert gas inside the bulb also...usually elemental argon, I believe. Other than that there is just the glass stalks that hold the filiment in the void of the bulb. Therefore, just where does the carbon come from that stains the inside of the glass when the filament burns out? The only thing I can postulate is that if the filamen…

What is a Metal Salt, How is it created, and How is it used? There isn't a resource that is reasonably accessible to me that way I can read up on the matter, so can someone help me understand the entire concept of metal salts in depth?

I'm trying to make nitric acid. The "classic" nitrate salt+HCl+Cu process. A friend gave me the nitrate in fertilizer form and neither of us even had a clue if it contained nitrates, however I tried making a small batch to see if it works. It didn't generate any visible NO2 gas. At least there didn't seem to be any orange/red-ish fumes in and around the bottle. Hoooowever gas was being generated (colourless) and the Cu was being eaten up. After some time the solution started turning dark green. A while after that, clumps of a percipitant started forming in the solution. Seemed to be white, but slightly green because of the color of the solution. I took the clumps o…

So I'm having a slight issue with my work. I think I figured it out, but I want to see if there's something I'm missing. I'm using the KNO3+Cu+HCL method to generate NO2 and lead it into H2O2 inside an ice bath. I'm able to generate the NO2 after applying heat (since I'm using muriatic acid), but I think the ice is melting too fast (I do not have a fume hood so I am outside) So it got me to thinking that if I chill the H2O2 overnight, add only ice without adding water and try in the early morning or at dusk that it may fix the issue at hand. I am also unsure on the time it needs for the process.

I seem to remember someone telling me once that any attempt at diy electroplating was going to use up so much of my time and electricity that I would end up wishing I had just bought the thing made out of silver. True? I was thinking of using the silver nitrate + potassium cyanide method. Silver nitrate is available on ebay but where should I get the potassium cyanide? Is it $$$? Regarding safety, how dangerous is the cyanide? Is it like in the movies or more reasonable? If I were to forget to wear an apron and spill some on my pants would a quick shower fix it, or would my last words be "Oh shi..." I have easily available v…

Hi guys I’m not a chemist but I’m hoping I can get some advice with regards to brewing and specifically chemicals used to sanitise when brewing at home. I regularly sanitise plastic fermenters for brewing with a mixture of thin household bleach and distilled vinegar in solution (2 tbsp of each in 20l of water). I have used this method on 15-20 batches of beer with no illness or ill effects for myself or any friends or family who have drank it. During my last brew I started to fill two fermenters with water and added the bleach and vinegar. I must have mixed it stronger than usual as the water turned bluey green which I understand signifies the production …

Hi, im living in big city with includes several waste incineration plants and i has a three questions: 1. Can a activated carbon filter in home air purifier retain dioxin(TCDD, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzodioxin)? 2. If yes then why manufacturers of air purifiers with carbon filter do not indicate that they can retain dioxin? 3. Is it possible to determine whether a other particular substance(ozone, nitrogen oxide, hydrogen sulfide, benzene etc.) will be retained by the filter? Thanks a lot.

I bought some non-woven polypropylene bags online. It smells bad. my mom says it smells of nasty chemical. is it toxic and harmful to our health ? why it still smells bad after i opened and put it near windows for 2 days ? https://www.answers.com/Q/What_is_nonwoven_Polypropylene Polypropylene is the most common form of synthetic material used.It is used in almost every thing we use. Though previously declared safe, recent searches reveal that polypropylene may release two highly toxic substances, quaternary ammonium biocides and oleamide. (i have some problem uploading pictures)

Hi everyone, I'm trying to create a chemistry lesson on the trends in the periodic table and I'd like to demonstrate the real-world utility of knowing each of trend. I've been looking on the internet for hours with no luck. What do applied chemists actually USE atomic radius for? What are the APPLICATIONS of that knowledge? What VALUE does knowing atomic radius offer the world? Surely it must be good for something ..... right?

I'm very excited about NURDRAGE's recent success with producing Na. If you don't know about it, here's a link: In the video he uses hypoallergenic baby oil so nothing really reacts with it. Since a large quantity would cost so much, I was wondering if It would be possible to substitute it for paraffin oil or even some sort of motor oil? I've been wanting to also make an oil bath apparatus so a general purpose oil (aka oil for high temp) for both applications would be nice. Any ideas on what I could use apart from buying hypoallergenic baby oil?

Hello, I am trying to do some detective work to understand the cause of a failed heating element. A yellow deposit was observed and elemental analysis shows strong peaks of Cr, O, Na, and Cl. the heating element has been in water softened by ion exchange with NaCl, so that makes sense. Heating elements are often Nichrome, which forms a coating of chromate (CrO4) once heated. Does anyone know if CrO4 is stable in aqueous NaCl? Could the presence of Na and Cl ions be attacking the CrO4? 'm not sure how the chemistry of it works. There could also be an influence of galvanic action. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

Can the party drug GHB be absorbed through the skin? If so can it be absorbed in significant amounts? Just read something on Reddit where a woman was given a business card that was laced with GHB and she started feeling tired and sick. Not sure how true the story is but it’s kind of scary thinking about that. I work in customer service so I’m being handed business cards all the time... Does anyone know if gettting the liquid on your hands cause you to get high? Or can the liquid/substance be absorbed through the skin and enter your bloodstream? i have 0 knowledge in chemistry

I have been learning more and more about radio waves and their effect on water. That being said, I am working on an invention that could totally alter the way I perform my job. Radio waves mixed with a cathode and anode has increasingly been used in drying foods and textile fabrics. However, this RF drying is done on a huge scale. Is it possible to do this on a smaller scale. Maybe a portable rf dryer? It would not be hard to mount a portable rf transmitter but this would have no effect on the water (the drying process) without the cathode and anode. What could I use for a portable cathode and anode?
