Don't ask how it happened, but I spilled bleach into my mother's stainless steel kitchen sink and it left patches of unsightly corroded metal. I know that the stain is chemical, but there's gotta be a way to reverse it or sand it off without further damaging the sink. Any suggestions? I don't want to buy my mom another sink. Any help is appreciated.

What are some common chemical compositions for materials used very commonly. An example would be water is [math]H_2O[/math], salt is [math]NaCl[/math]. I'm not asking things like carbon dioxide ([math]CO_2[/math]) because that's not used by the average person (besides in breathing and photosynthesis). And obviously not the ones that I said above.

I am trying to make steel bolts and nuts rust so that I can determine the amount of torque needed to unscrew the nut from the bolt. I have searched the forum and found diverse and conflicting information about the various chemicals so I thought I was post this as a new topic. I have tried various recipes and combinations of chemicals to make bolts rust and/or corrode, I am not talking about a pretty patina on the surface but so that nuts are hard to remove from the bolts. What are your recommendations for chemicals, ratios, durations, etc., and why. Why do you think of common household bleach and Hydrogen Peroxide and in what ratio/mix? How would Vinegar affe…

  4. I'm about to glue my Ram X grip phone mount to my windscreen because it doesn't stick properly & have tried everything including a replacement suction cup, none works well. The whole mount just slides down the windscreen within an hour. I had in mind using something like 3M moisture curing urethane adhesive as that is what they use for gluing in windscreens to cars. It sounds like it will stick very well to the glass. I only have one shot at this so wanted to ask: For adhesion of rubber to the urethane glue should the rubber suction cup be roughed up with coarse sand paper or not? Could you think of a better adhesive or something in between the rubber & u…

Hi, I was thinking of trying electroplating at home. From what I recall from chemistry back in high school, electroplating is like the voltaic cell, except that voltage is applied to reverse the direction of the reaction, plating the more reactive metal onto an electrode, while corroding the less reactive one. More specifically, I was considering electroplating magnesium from epsom salt, and using one close to it on the activity series (like aluminum) so as to save on electricity use while doing it. The problem is, I only have access to magnesium sulfate, not magnesium, so I can't use a magnesium electrode. And I don't know how to get access to sulfates of ANY metals …

  7. According to my teacher Dr. Istone who has a PHD in Chemistry, there is a mixture of chemicals that when ignited burn at a low enough temperature for the skin to withstand it. He used to be a Chemical Magician (one of his 100's of jobs) and one of the tricks he did was ignite the mixture on his arms and walk around while on fire. One of the characteristics of the flame is that the color is a blue tint. Please help me because my teacher was going to show us this demonstration but we ran out of time at the end of the year. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, ThermiteMan

Hello all, I was wondering whether striking a match is endothermic or exothermic. This seems quite straight forward as striking a match releases heat, which is obviously exothermic. However, the process of igniting the match requires heat in itself, so I was wondering since the reaction required heat, would it be endothermic instead? I read from a post somewhere that for a reaction to be endothermic, heat is absorbed for the reaction to occur. Since heat is required for the initial ignition of the match, wouldn't that be an endothermic reaction? As well, is the bolded statement correct? Thanks

Interesting. here is another method for cleaning silver that you could try......from wikipedia http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/0022508883900954 I assume it works simply by destablising the sulfide tarnish thus allowing it to be rubbed off easily. But you wouldn't want to leave the silver in it for to long as you may end up converting the black sulfide tarnish to crusty chloride deposits. This patent, found via google scholar, also indicates that ammonia is capable of converting silver sulfide to diammine silver plus free sulfurous by-product. Hence ammonia is useful for cleaning the tarnish from silverware. http://www.google.com.au/p…

Hello - this is my first post - I hope it is in the right forum. I am a textile artist and I want to use thickened bleach to screen print onto fabric (the fabric has been dyed with indigo and I want to selectively remove the colour to create a pattern). I have a small quantity of a product called Bleach thickener produced by the Jacquard company (for textile artists), and it works very well. The jar doesn't say what the chemical composition of the product is. I will run out of this soon, and it isn't available in Australia. I am looking for something else that will do the job. I have tried cornflour (I think Americans call it corn starch?) but no matter how thick I m…

Hello, I have big problem: In the country where I live: Belgium, It is very hard to find Kno3-, NaClO3-,KClO3-, etc-like stuff. Even worse, You can't buy many products with alot of "O". So after months of searching, I gave up. But recently I saw a video of burning sugar, and I thought: That's almoast thesame as burning KNO3!!. And I tried and tried, but my sugar does only melts. So my question is, how do I burn sugar? (Or can you give me an other good oxidator?) (sorry for the bad english, I normally don't speak english, and I don't have much time.)

Trying to find how to put together one deflated 'party' balloon with a few grams of water in it and a chamber or packet with some compound also inside, that due to mechanical jerk they mix and produce a gas, perhaps CO2, so in less than a minute would inflate to something like 5 to 10 litres. What household or simple compounds could achieve this ? Would baking soda or baking powder or a more energetic something work ? Ideas ?

Just then I dipped a piece of wood into a magnesium sulfate solution within a glass. First off is there any chance of the combination of the solution and the wood causing damage to the glass? Anyway, I'm doing this to get the wood to soak in some of the magnesium sulfate solution like how it does with water. I'm guessing that it would soak in some of it, though not much of it. My reason for THAT, in turn, is to have a magnesium sulfate soaked piece of wood to burn on the fire, because I tried burning magnesium sulfate in the fire before by placing some magnesium sulfate onto a piece of wood and putting the wood in the fire; I didn't see the white flame it's supposedly…
