odd event during lead nitrate with sodium iodide makes lead iodide I was having my students do the above lab when they ran out of time. I had them start filtering the precipitate in plastic funnels and covered the funnels with copier paper to keep anything from falling into the funnels to add weight to the solids. When I came back over the weekend the copier paper was still in place and the filter papers were dry but the copier paper had a blue to dark blue circle where it was covering the funnel. Any idea what caused the color change on the copier paper? The lead nitrate was made during the lab by reacting lead granules with concentrated nitric acid. So the …

Dears, All of us know that chemical reaction between calcium oxide (quicklime) with water will produce heat energy strongly by the following equation: Cao + H2O = Ca(OH)2 -> releases heat energy I have improved the reaction above to maximize the heat energy production with the following steps: I use a plastic jar whose volume is around 65.53 cm3. I put into the jar 3 full spoons of quicklime. (The volume of the spoon is around 7.85 cm3) Boil water Fill in the remaining volume of the jar with boiled water Then drop some floor cleaner liquid into the jar and shut it tightly Result: After step 3, the mixture begins to bubble up and overflow severely. This results f…

If I have an acid say phosphoric acid which has a ph of 4, and a citric acid with a ph of 4 will the ph still be 4, (because both are independant) or will the ph go down to say 3 because the sum of the 2 parts are greater than the whole? please let me know Thanks Brad

The oxidation of Fe2+by water The Pourbaix diagram (1) defines the fields of existence of chemical compounds according to the pH and the redox potential of an environment. The lines on a Pourbaix diagram define the reactions of transformation of a compound in the other. An area delimited by these lines thus represents the field of existence of a compound. The following web page (2) shows the Pourbaix diagram of iron and its hydroxides in water. One can see on this diagram that the field of stability of Fe2+ in basic environment is particularly narrow. In addition, this field overlaps the limit of stability of water. This situation shows that the Fe2+ reduces th…

Hello Everyone I am not a chemist nor have much experience in the formulas. I have tried to solve this and I can not get it to work out. I am trying to find the Ph of 8.10581454g of 85% phosphoric acid in 18927.1ml of water. Here is my math Ok can some one please tell me if I did this right I have 8.105807928 grams of 85% Phosphoric acid. Now Phosphoric acid has 97.995287 molecular mass So if i divide 8.105870928 by 97.995287 I get .082716304 moles is this correct? Then since I have 18.9271 L So if I take .082716304 and divide by 18.9271 i get .00437 for the concentrate is this correct? Now when I put this into the ph calculato…

Hello e everyone. I’m a noob and have limited chemistry education. I am learning the process to manufacture biodiesel. I have in my possession two 50 pound containers of Potassium Hydroxide (originally in flake fom). Unfortunately the flakes have sat a long time and have become saturated in liquid of which I believe Is water. My question is how do you remove the water from the potassium hydroxide? I have knowledge of the fact that water can be boiled at room temperature under a vacuum. So if I place the saturated potassium hydroxide under a vacuum will I remove the water and am I doing anything that could be potentially dangerous i.e. explosive or creating a chemical I w…

Hi I'm newcomer here. I have got question about metals in vapor state. If metals are solids they've got metal bonding. So, what type of bonding this metals have at vapor state? This is first question. And second question is about conduction. Are metals in vapor state good conductors? If they are good insulators could someone explain me that?

-hi everyone I´m using a protocol for arsenic determination. It uses the bleaching of methylene blue for the action of arsine. The arsine is formed when arsenic compounds react with NaBH4. My problem es when I try to make a calibration curve I can´t see the bleaching while I increment the concentración of arsenic. According to this protocol, NaBH4 should be cold and prepared the same day of the experiment, done!!. But I get the same result every time I increase the concentration of arsenic. I´m using this article as a reference: https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/10d1/b7f38475a6007628eb9c88a12bde4b037ea5.pdf Is there something I´m doing wrong?

Hi, Can someone please help me here? Would it be possible to take a super saturated water based solution of Sodium Chloride add the same to 200 proof Ethanol. After which could I add Calcium Chloride to remove all water added and hence could I regain Ethanol to 200 proof but now with Sodium Chloride added? By doing the above how much lower could I reduce the freezing point of Ethanol from -173°F ? Thanks, jsa_ind

So, I'm an electronics technician, so my knowledge of chemistry is limited to some rudimentary knowledge regarding battery chemistry and electrolytic capacitors. So, I need some calcium chloride to raise the density of water to do a glitter lamp, but it's expensive to order online. I can, however, get desiccant at the local hardware store, which contains a mix of potassium and calcium chloride. Is there a simple way I can separate the two?

Hi All, First post on this forum, Hopefully in the right section, looking for some help please; Not sure if this is even possible but as the title suggests,is it possible to give a coloured liquid properties so that once it dries, cools or evaporates it turns clear ? I've seen a glue on the market which is purple and turn clear when it dries, but I'm wanting this to dry without residue and be like water. Thanks In advance Jon

Hi there! Last night I tried to make an all natural deodorant by mixing together the following ingredients. I left them overnight in a small plastic cup and when I woke up this morning the solution had ate through the plastic. Would love to get some help figuring out what caused such a crazy reaction . I should mention I am not a definitely not a chemist so I apologize in advanced if this questions seems silly. I have a feeling it might be something with the salt because it sunk to the bottom and thats where the holes in the cup were but again I have no idea. Magnesium Oil (I believe its magnesium chloride + water) 25g Colloidal silver, 2.3 grams S…

Hi Everyone, I have been looking into the world of octahedral organometallic complexes Molybdenum hexacarbonyl is a white colour and is a d6 compound. The carbonyl ligands are classsed as strong field so would induce a large octahedral splitting of the d orbitals resulting in low spin In low spin the six electrons would completely fill up the 3 t2g orbitals and there would be no unpaired electrons I am right in thinking that because there are no unpaired electrons to make a transition up into the eg orbitals after a photon of light is added, no colour frequency of light is absorbed and therefore all colours are reflected back as white or colourles…

I have a solution of 1200 gallons of water and HCl. I need to lower the pH periodically to keep it within a working range of 1.5-2.5. I am looking for an equation which would allow me to calculate precisely the amount of HCl I need to add to bring the solution back into that range. For example if the pH is taken at 2.6 and I want the pH to be 2.0 how much HCl do I need? The concentration of the HCl is 31% prior to adding to the solution.

Hi science guru's I'm doing some reaserch on photoactive fabrics that can change there composition when exposed to UV light. I'm in no way smart enough to know what I'm looking for so I was wondering if anyone could direct me. To give an Idea of what I'm looking for allow me to be more specific. I'm looking at fabric which can change from something that can let light throigh to something that can block light out with the transition being the disappearance of UV light turning the fabric solid. If anyone has done reaserch like this or knows where I can start my own reaserch into this there advice and help would be much appreciated.

Hi,I have some mgso4, is there a way I could make mgcl2 from it? Here are my theories by using double displacement, if I add mgso4(aq) and nacl(aq) will this make sodium sulphate and mgcl2 and if it does which(if any) are solid? Also could I make it from magnesium hydroxide? Im sorry but I’m also wondering if I could make sulphuric acid from sodium or magnesium sulphate

Hello, I have to prepare a presentation about wastewater treatment modelling but I have some trouble. First of all, I do not really know what it means. Secondly, I do not know what topics I should talk about. I tried googling it but there are so many different resources and I do not know where to start. What I need to do is make a basic presentation and not go in to small details. Can you suggest me the things to put in my presentation?
