I have an external hard drive, which neither Ubuntu or Windows will recognize. I was originally a hard drive in and old lap-top which I removed, put into a case and connected to my computer via USB 2.0 It worked fine for a few months, now when I plug it in, it's as if it doesn't exist, I just doesn't show up. The problem occured when I was re-formating it, halfway through the process the partition editor said the drive was un-allocated. Since then I've been unable to mount it, access it or do anything with it Any suggestions?

So I have this very annoying problem with FF3 and I think it has something to do with one of the web site formats, in particular the one that ebay uses, I don't know whether it's the java component or some other, but it simply does not want to load up a page and even if I somehow manage to get it to load, when I click on "next page" at the bottom of the current page the screen just moves up to the top of the same current page and nothing else happens, thus I cannot proceed to the next page. Interestingly, when I open it up with IE, generally it loads without problems, but clicking on the "next page" button does exact same thing as FF3. I believe my java plugin in FF3 is u…

I'm not much of a gamer, except that I love Madden football games on PC. Right now I'm stuck with the stock integrated video circuit on my motherboard that I bought about 6 months ago. It's a Gigabyte GA-M61 SME-S2, which are already obsolete at MicroCenter, where I bought it. Needless to say, the video performance ain't that great. I've managed to tweak enough settings to get it managable to enjoy my game. But geez, it's far from the smooth, quality video I see on my kid's Xbox. So, I'm ready to upgrade to a PCIe now. My question is, what kind of PCIe video card specs should I be looking at to attain a smooth video performance on Madden? (in case anyone ha…

Hi Guys (and Gals), I've really got to learn Visual Basic, but haven't had the opportunity yet. I'm struggling through something which is probably painfully simple, but I've not come very far using my google-fu. Here's the deal. I've got a Form in Access that we are using to fill out information about our training programs. The data we enter should go to an Output_Table, so I create a Form with Wizard that grabs all of the Fields from the Output_Table. Inside the Form, we have a field called Course_Code. The selection here should be pushed to the Output_Table. I have made this a combo box which pulls data from another table called Courses_Table. …

I have a USB webcam that`s driving me nuts! it`ll work on USB 1 or USB 2 ports but on the UBB 1 the res is really low and the framerate is 1 frame/sec. on the USB 2 port it`s good res and 30FPS, BUT... for no reason I can figure it will crash (make the computer freeze) at any given time without warning, some times it`ll work for a day, other times it`ll freeze in a few seconds and I have to press the reset on the tower case. I`v tried with and without an extension cable, I`v added a ferrite balum to stop noise and it still does it and yet another cam (a different make) works great on both USB types and never a problem (just a very low res). any idea what`s …

Hi, I have been trying to find information on how to use a flash drive as RAM in windows XP. I've heard that it is possible but I haven't been able to find any info on how to do it after doing some google searches. Does anyone know if a) it's possible and b) whether there are instructions on the web about how to do it. I have a PNY Attache 256M drive. I know 256 isn't a lot but I only have 512 in my comp so I figure it should make some difference. Thanks

I want to use my webcam in a msn compatible program in linux, and I need some help. Here is where I am at: -running Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) -I have a Microsoft Lifecam vx-1000 webcam -I heard aMSN was pretty good and actually had webcam support, so that's what I've been hoping to use (aMSN 0.97.2) -I've used lsusb to see that my webcam is indeed connected and detected and the green light on it is on, there is power. -but when I try to configure my audio/video settings in aMSN, it tells me that a webcam has not been detected by aMSN -I tried using Camorama Webcam Viewer, and it says it could not connect to a video device (/dev/video0) and indeed there is…

While testing one of my web sites, I was monitoring my cookies folder and I noticed something very strange. Whenever I use IE7 in Vista to browse a folder's index page without adding a trailing slash, four Microsoft cookies are automatically created. For example, these cookies would be created if I visited "http://scienceforums.net/forum" instead of "http://scienceforums.net/forum/". The cookies are Live, MSN, Windowsmarketplace, and Zune. Why were these cookies created when I didn't visit these web sites?

The USB mouse included with my Dell Inspiron 530S has recently been adding extra clicks. For example, a lot of single-clicks will register as double-clicks. When I double-click, the mouse will sometimes click three times. Other times, the mouse will be working fine. I don't believe this is a hardware issue because the mouse works fine when I boot into Linux. I tried adjusting the double-click speed in the Windows Vista Control Panel, but that didn't solve the problem. I also reinstalled the mouse driver, and ran Spyware and Anti-virus scans. I can't think of any running programs that could be causing this. Does anyone have any suggestions, or know why the mo…

I was able to watch the first ten minutes on Youtube, but it only had the first ten minutes. So I go to this website where its posted in its entirety and a few minutes through, I get booted out of firefox. I've got 256 Mb RAM, which is supposedly borderline for Ubuntu 8.04, but I had to downgrade to Feisty 7.x which I believe should be perfectly fine with 256. I have 2.0 Ghz P4, so everything should be fine as far as hardware and this is a fresh install of Feisty with all of the updates so I should be up and running as well as could be. I believe that I've got all of the plugins necessary because the thing plays, but just for a short time. http://www.youdecid…

I have noticed sometimes that the "Battery remaing: xx%" tool on my laptop sometimes gives unstable results. For example it might be 100% one minute, drop to 80% and then go back up to 100. When this happens, I think it gets a little warmer than usual too. I know that laptop batteries have a circuit to tell the power supply when to stop charging. I am worried that if there is something wrong with this, my battery might be damaged by overcharging. Is there a way I could diagnose/fix this?

Virtumonde is such a bastard. I can't shake it and I'm going to have to wipe my drive and blah blah blah, I hate it. What do I have to do to keep from getting this freaking thing again? I think I'm getting it from peer to peer. I just use bit torrent and download a movie or tv show once or twice a week maybe. It's always a popular one with lots of seeds and comments, so I don't know how to police my search any better than that. I never download the little text files or info files that sometimes come with them. WTF?

Ok, so let's see here. I've been trying to use this really cool multimedia sound studio, LMMS, for months, here and there and I finally have some time to my hands. Ubuntu, my distro, has not updated LMMS to most current 4.x for who knows how long, at least not through Synaptic package manager. Probably has something to do with the fact that 4.x uses a radically new architecture, which is leading me to Sidux distro, which looks like the best distro to accommodate sound and multimedia recording environment. From screenshots, Linux Multi Media Studio is looking more and more like Fruity Loops, which has some realllllly powerful tools, as long as you keep paying more and m…

I want to upgrade my fairly old computer by doubling its RAM from 512 Mb to 1Gb. I don't know what the motherboard is and i'm not sure how to find out without opening the box and reading it off the board itself. I'm vaguely aware that there is probably more than just one kind of RAM available and the last tiem I did this was about 8 years ago on another computer. any advice?

My new notebook has been in use for a couple of days, and I'm already seeing a few heat problems. It's a Dell XPS m1530, so the slim chassis and the higher-end parts don't sit too well. My first question is if heat really is so bad. What effects does it have on parts, and will it decrease performance? (I hope I didn't ruin it already.) Secondly, when running anything intensive, the notebook occasionally shuts itself off for no apparent reason, even when charged. I'm thinking that this is to protect itself from heat, but surface temperatures are always relatively cool. So does anyone have any good reasons? Thanks.

I use Microsoft Outlook Express to read newsgroup messages. I wish to block a particular poster but he changes his handle everytime so that I can't simply use the Block Sender function and killfile him. Outlook Express has a function called "Rules" or something like that, which allows people to select a criterion which will automatically process messages and, if the user wants, to delete certain messages when they arrive. Using this function would allow me to delete these messages because he always posts the same E-mail address in each and every thread. Question: How do I create a rule which will delete all messages which contain a particular E-mail address? Than…

Good Morning, I have a machine running XP Pro SP2 and have installed 2 Pioneer 112D Combo Drives - master & slave. Problem is, when I have 2 music cd's in the drives - windows media player only recognizes one cd at a time and says the other drive is empty? I have uninstalled & reinstalled the drivers, media player, firmware updates. When I had 2 different models of the combo drives I never had this problem. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated before I become bald from tearing out my hair! Thanks
