I was thinking about a possible scenario and a possible answer to a problem. Yes, I know this seems quite disturbing, but I'm being serious. Imagine that you're in the desert. You haven't been able to find water, but you've found animals around. These animals are dying, yet you could kill them for food. However, you're running low on water. A thought crosses your mind, "Could I drain the blood into a pot and boil it for the water?" What do you think? Could such a thing be possible?

This is a real classical experiment, but it is always fun to do it. http://woelen.scheikunde.net/science/chem/exps/nitrocotton/index.html This makes nitrated cellulose wadding, which IIRC also is called guncotton. It burns really fast with a brilliant orange flame. Have fun, but please be careful!

In chemistry I recently did a lab showing how temperature relates to the pressure of a gas. We used what I believe was called a Gay-Lussac device. It was placed in water which was heated and then the pressure of the gas inside the device was measured. We estimated absolute zero with the data we got and our estimate was -276. My question is if the gas temperature inside the device wasn't the same as the water temperature how would this affect the measure of absolute value and if the sphere in which the gas was contained expanded how would this affect the estimate of absolute zero. Hopefully I explained that well enough.......I really appreciate your replies. than…

I got a chemistry model building set (balls and sticks), and it came with carbon atoms that have 4 holes (which makes sense) but also with carbons that have 5 holes. I never knew that you can have carbon molecules that can make 5 bonds. When does it do this?

How do I find out initial amounts of a equilibrium problem if one or some of them are not given ? Ex: Equilibrium is established in a 2.50-L flask at 250 degree celcius for the reaction: PCl5(g) -> PCl3(g) + Cl2(g) Kc= 3.8x10^-2 How many moles of each molecule is present, if 0.550mol of each PCl5 and PCl3 was initially introduced into the flask? .. thanks

A colleague of mine ignited propanoic acid. The resulting smell was described as quite unsettling for him and some of his students. He then attempted to ignite glacial acetic acid which does have a flammable symbol on the reagent bottle. However, he could not ignite it. Can anyone enlighten(no pun here) us high school chemistry teachers why we weren't able to ignite flammable glacial acetic acid? Thanks Ferdinand

This might seem like a pointless thread, but I like to seek the wise council and hope they could give some insight, input, and/or advice. For those of you who aren't American, there is a test in America that allows people to earn college credit for passing a test. It's a nice way of flying out of courses if a person has previous experience. However, if a person screws up the first time, then he or she can only take the test again after 6 months has passed from the previous testing date. So, if any of you are in America and think you've got some decent experience, you might be interested in taking it. (Each test costs about $60 USD. An affordable way to get college…

This morning I was heating up a large pan of oil and I noticed that when the oil got to a certain heat, small bubbles of gas would form on the bottom of the pan and rise to the top as water does when it boils. This confused me a little as I always assumed gases cannot dissolve in non polar solvents. Does anyone know what was going on?

Hello, I have some salt dough that i made and i am wondering if there is any way of preserving it permanently. If it was sealed away from any air would it be preserved until exposed to air ? Or is there anything else with the same sort of consistency of salt dough that does last forever ? What gel do they use in Gel mouse pads ? Any ideas ? Thanks !

Hey, I'm wondering if it is possible to safely mould plastics. I know the problems are that it gives of toxic fumes and often chards before it melts. But companies do it using some sort of powder ? Then they simply melt it and mould it and allow it to chill. Does anyone know what the plastic it is that I can use ? It needs to be strong when it solidifies . Also I need a material I can mould it in which can easily be shaped etc ? Can anyone help me ? Thanks a lot !
