Alright, I'm doing my science fair project testing the SPFs of different sunscreens (I'm sure it's far below 99% of you on this site, but meh). I will be using a UV sensitive yeast to test the effectiveness of the sunscreens. What is the name of a strand of UV sensitive yeast? I know there's one out there, but I've not found a name! Also, where is it avalable to be ordered from? Thanks so much!!!

My physics teacher recently discovered that some sort of organism grew in a super saturated sucrose-water solution . However, my biology teacher and I were unable to identify what fungus, mold, ect it was . For now i will do my best to describe it and I will try to get a picture posted by Monday. It's like a hyrid between a jellyfish and a eyeball. It has a large inch diameter spherical top with something black inside it. Extending from one side there is a cloud of tentacle-like extensions. I assume that the bottle was closed for the time that the bottle sat on the shelf, however I do not know if it was air-tight. If any one has any ideas please post. Thanks.…

Hi, I heard the other day that when you exoerience something that makes you jump or when you need to react fast like walking out in front of a car, your vision goes into black and white mode. Is this true?

Which contains protein whereby a biuret test will show a positive result? I know saliva contain enzymes. Enzymes are protein in nature but aren't there in minute quantities to be accounted for? Isn't urea made from protein?

First off, I am a 14 year old and by no means on the level of thinking that some of the older members here are at. But I have found these two articles very interesting, specificaly the "baby" alien article because of it's genuinity and the amount of clear pictures supplied with the article. The baby dragon one causes me to be a little more skeptical however but the umbilical cord raises some questions and I also wanted to know if any one could find a x-ray of this dragon. Also another observation about the "baby dragon" is that in the jar the bluring of it's appendages that are farther away from the view of the camera are blured due to the liquid, while the most p…

Saponin is a class of glycosides, found widely in plants, like soybeans, soapwort and aloe vera. They have detergent properties and form a lather when shaken with water. Their presence in plants is thought to act as a deterrent to herbivores- they are bitter-tasting and cause gastric irritation if ingested. They are also highly toxic to fish. If injected into the bloodstream they disrupt red cells, through their effects on cell membranes. I need to know what does it do to the cell membrane/cell wall, and it's effects on it. I've tried searching google and yahoo but nothing helpful came up. Has anyone done research on saponin, or can direct me to informative saponin we…

If you were to make a solution of retina pigments and feed it to a photosynthetic plant, would the plant absorb the retina? If it did absorb the retina, would the plant turn white, since it would be able to absorb the full spectrum of visible light?

My biology professor mentioned something about specialized channels in cell membranes for water to pass into the cell. Although she (my professor) wasn't sure if the channels were only theory, she thought they were referred to as aquaporins. Do these really exist or can water diffuse throught the membrane itself?

yo people ive finally chosen what i want to do for my honours project! anoxia tolerance in insects! basically gonna get a few types of insects (undecided what species), and stick them in a air tight bag....oxygen will be depleted and increased levels of CO2 will occur........ ive got a few journals on previous studies and its very intresting....i shal be ordering the insects in (to my uni lab) for the experiment to commence! anybody have any idea of what type of insects i shuld use? i was thinking beetles and maybe larvae from beetles. what do u think i shuld test for etc? i am going to let the insects have oxygen after a set period of time and record mort…

I was planning on researching plant DNA and Biology, and i have found some interesting informational websites. I have narrowed down my interests to the study of plants, their composition and DNA and it would be great if you, the science community could share some possible experiment ideas for this topic. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thank you!

I want to have a more clear further concept for the osmosis, can anyone help me? When do the net movement become equilibrium? Same pressure, same water potential? Or same concentration ( Probably wrong, right?)? My teacher used a dialysis tubing containing pure water, why isn't the water coming out at once after it is taken out from the pure water solution? May you refer my ugly or beautiful drawing first? In region A , there is a lot of mobile ions and water molecules. In region B, there is a lot of water molecules and ions are absent. A selectively membrane separate them. 1.Why the rate of the water molecules flow from high water potential solution is higher th…

Hey, i'm kind of a rookie-paleontology-buff, and i'd like to know if there is any validity to reports of two potentially new super-carnivores, Saurophaganax maximus, and Tyrannosaurus imperator. Apparently Saurophagnax was a giant Allosaur offshoot, possibly even a big species of the Allosaur genus. If it's been decently described and documented, how big was it? I've heard fifteen meters. If it hasn't been properly described, is it probably just a slightly large Allosaur whose size has been greatly over-exaggerated? Secondly, regarding Tyrannosaurus imperator, i've found information stating that a new species of Tyrannosaurus has been discovered that was 20…

I have had dogs before who seemed to be dreaming. Most of the times the feet would go as though they were running. Now, I have Sadie, a black lab mix "pound puppy". She's now about 2. She is a very sweet and good natured dog, and she loves people, but some things absolutely terrify her - the garden hose for instance. She is afraid when you even turn on the spigot. Now - for the dream part. When she is asleep you often yelps as though she is being beaten. Several times it has caused me to rush from another room to check on her because it sounds as if she is being hurt. Do you suppose that she could be having dreams about her former abusive treatment?

I have read that while certain animals (elephants, turtles, etc) live much long lives in terms of years as compared to other animals (rodents, etc), their lifespans are fairly equal in terms of number of heartbeats, with the smaller animals running on faster metabolisms “using up” their ultimate “allotment” of heartbeats faster than the larger animals with slower metabolisms. All of this makes perfect sense to me. My main question is this: I thought that birds have relatively fast metabolisms, with rapid heartbeats. If this is true, though, how do certain types of birds, like the large breeds of parrots and macaws, often live for well over 50 years? How does their …
