Discussion of science topics that don't fit under any other category.

  1. Hello, Some time ago I saw a program about the composition of the universe (dark energy, dark matter etc.). The program showed an interview with a scientist who represented a group of scientists who studied the composition of the universe and the expansion of matter from a central point(big bang theory). They made a computer simulation that showed the expansion of matter as small points of light. They did this to show that the unknown force known as dark energy was needed for the existence of a stable universe. The simulation simply showed matter as tiny points, but what if we wanted to make a simulation that showed all the complex interactions of atoms and m…

I didn't know where to put this so I put it here. Why are car companys making hydrogen fuel cells, why don't they just make a hydrogen internal combustion engine I know it can be done, but there must be something I don't understand because they seem to all want to make fuel cells and not internal combustion engines. Could someone please explain and educate me as to why hydrogen fuel cells are better than hydrogen internal combustion engines?

For those of you who don't know about cryonics, take a looksie at this --> http://www.benbest.com/cryonics/CryoFAQ.html#_IA_ What do you think of it all? Is such a thing scientifically feasible? Are you against it morally? Would you be interested in being frozen? I'd be interested to hear what you think.

  6. This is a topic, obviously, about a theoretical event that casues the near-extinction of humanity. Lets say for example an asteroid or super-volcano kills eighty percent of the human population. Now there is no shortage of literature and movies delving into the onset or immediate aftermath of such an event. My questions are these however: Lets say a thousand years have passed since the event, and the human population has begun to rebuild. In theory this should be long enough for whatever enviroment effects to have subsided. What types of culture would likely exist? What kind of remnants of our world would remain? What is the likely hood that technol…

  7. I was wondering if any of you guys knew of any books that focus on the best ways to teach children about critical thinking, the scientific method, etc. Not books that focus on teaching specific things, or forcing your child to learn or memorize, but just a general kind for the best approaches to basically equipping a young child (4-5 years old) with the kind of mindset that will allow him to think, develop ideas and hypotheses, investigate things, etc. I already do things like this with my nephew, so he can have a good foundation in critical thinking, but I didn't know if maybe there were other ways I can try, or games or experiments I could do to show him these thing…

In such science as conflictology, there are several unresolved problems: · Of than does consist the essence of the interrelation between the concepts social conflict and social control? · Do conflicts have a benefit? · In than do the reasons and the purpose of conflict consists? · Whatis criterion for the classification of conflicts? · WhetherIs it necessary or is it possible to settle all conflicts on the…

Hi, I was thinking about this for quite a while now. Practically everything we buy is packaged in some form or another, like for example: food, electronics, shoes, accessories, games......etc. Is there a way to be minimalist about how we go about packaging our 'stuff' and try to reduce waste. Or employ biodegradable materials in our packaging?

(Disclaimer: I couldn't think of any where to put this since I don't know which category it would go under) I'm, by no means, any sort of scientist. I'm a 13 year old in 8th grade. But one thing I love about the universe is space. I really, really want to go out there some time and I figure I'll never live long enough or be fit enough to be an astronaut. And so, I came up with an idea. It's like a black box, but for humans. It records everything in your brain (memories, etc.) and stores them inside it. Then, once you die, they can put this "second brain" into a new body (robotic or other) and you pretty much be reanimated. This could mean time travel (waiting a long peri…

  12. I am not talking about Cancer here but ageing. I wondered why there is such an effort to find cures etc for cancer but there does not seem to be as much fuss about curing ageing which as far as i am aware is a degenerative disease caused by your body not producing as many cells as are dieing, I understand this may be a simplistic view but i am an amateur who has never studied science after high school apart from on my own time. In terms of curable diseases i would (again possibly a simplistic view) have thought ageing would seem like one of the more easily tackled diseases to try and find a cure for as we understand generally what is happening. I am sure in practi…

This species of evergreen vine gets its name (Passiflora) the resemblance of itsflowers with the passion of christ (jesus crussificação), it has a cross in the center. It originated in tropical America, but adapts well to the Mediterranean climate. Studies conducted in 1867 revealed the interest of this plant to the world of science and medicine. This plant is not toxic and can be used for many purposes: to cure insomnia, to cuase body relaxation, healing alcoholic or morphine intoxiation. Thus it has the ability to give the user a kind of buzz which lasts about 15-20 minutes, and leaves the consumer "happy" for 1 hour or two. The most active part of the plant's flow…

I'd really appreciate it if anyone could anyswer any of these questions: 1. What is the difference between idioms and phrasal lexemes? 2. What does Langacker's "schematization" and "abstraction" mean with regards to his schema - instance notion? I've read different things about what the terms refer to. 3. I have to write an essay about paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations, and the only text I have available is Course in General Linguistics, but I think I'm expected to write about the current understanding of p&s relations. What's troubling me is that I found the following quote on a website: Quote: aussure's notion of 'associative' rel…

I am God but I have to be careful and do things slowly. If you have any questions for me please reply to my post. I want to take my time and explain everything. I was already kicked off of the unexplained-mysteries.com forum because I went to fast with too much information. I don't want to make the same mistake here. I will take my time and answer all of the questions presented to me. I have a story to tell. I will take my time and will carefully and professionally present it to this website.

What’s the trick to sleeping? At night, I usually lie in bed for hours before I finally doze off. The harder I try to sleep, the longer it takes. On the other hand, I’ve watched, with jealousy, people fall asleep within a matter of seconds! What am I missing here? Is there a trick to it? And don’t tell me to count sheep, that never works!

Lets say 50% of american population is white skinned excluding blacks. What if the remaining 50% US population has tanned arms and legs, but having extremely white looks as if there is a white layer of pigment skin covered on the face. So this foreigner race is infact similar skin like wheatish indians but with the layer white they seem like extremely white foreigners, feigned looks! Like say late michael jackson never ever went to plastic surgeon but just had that hocus pocus layer white and he became american white! Then iranians and some fair indians are much whiter than american fake whites! Then many tanned indians move to america by applying layer white and aga…

Need help in finding accurate data about Greek debt. The datas I found so far do not match together. 1.from medias we have Greek debt from 344 to 352 billion Euro. (media source JPmorgan). We'll take the higher figure. This is the whole debt. The greek problem is not the whole debt, because all countries have debt. When this debt reaches 100% of GDP, the bell is ringing. When it goes to 110% of GDP, the country is going bad. When it reaches 120% of GDP, there is a real problem. That was the situation of Belgium in the 80's-90's, which took measures at that time and managed to reduce to about 100% of GDP when entering the Euro zone. For Greece the rat…

Shallow geothermics. Always wanted to implement it; now I can and am ready. There is now an unused fresh water well in my backyard, has a suction pump, thus should have a check valve at the bottom of the pipe, then I believe is not 'deep'. Canot be over ~30 feet. (Coastal North Carolina) The well water temperature is somewhere near 60ºF. Inserting an automobile radiator in the return side of the central heating/air conditioner duct, fed by the closed loop from a U in the well with a recirculation pump, should supply the dwelling with ~60ºF air, to the capabilities of BTU exchange minus losses. In summer, for a ~85ºF weather, a delta t of around 25ºF; pretty dec…

A science crackpot makes foolish claims with nothing to back them up but their own certainty. They're usually convinced that their lack of formal study makes them uniquely capable of seeing the truth through all the academic clutter most PhDs are saddled with. We're always hopeful crackpots can be shown that science isn't what they think it is. With this in mind, I want to start this thread where you can post examples of crackpot thinking you encounter here or elsewhere. A couple of rules. No attributions, please. Remove the names, we're not looking to embarrass anyone. Also, where possible or needed, point out the flawed thinking and possible causes. I'd like th…
