Does this site have an anthropology forum, or does that come under 'other sciences' ?

I would be interested in a thread on anthropology and gender identity. How have other cultures approached it, what options existed for the mismatched or nonbinary before surgical or endocrine interventions were available, are there modern cultures where gender fluidity is easier, are there cultures where just a wardrobe change satisfies all parties, etc. (sorry, I realize I have probably suggested several threads right there) Just as economists benefit when anthropologists go out and study credit and debt in other societies, so too could psychologists benefit when anthropologists go where gender norms are different. We often get boxed into disciplines where …

I hope this is not a repost, but I couldn't find the topic in the Search function. The US have for a long time been trying to develop a missile defense system, to defend themselves from nuclear attacks etc. From my understanding this project has failed so far. From what I have read about the project the system contains multiple anti air missile launching sites around the US and in other areas as well. When an enemy missile is within range of the anti air missile sites, multiple counter missiles will be fired agains the hostile missile and destroy it. I was thinking of another way, probably to ambitious - and some of you might have som cons against it too. …

My transit tickets have a magnetic strip, and are regularly getting demagnetized. I've eliminated every magnet I can find, but despite my best efforts, I cannot track down the source....so have to assume its coming from outside the house. I'm looking for any cheap/commonly available material to make a ticket holder that will protect my tickets. I'm already aware of the expensive stuff (like metal alloys). Any ideas?

Just say I had enough anti-matter to get the US space shuttle (34 Mtr long), to the nearest star. If the shuttle was half way between the earth and the moon and was hit by something and exploded, would the explosion be big enough to wipe out the earth? What about the solar system? Would you be able to see it light years away?

I have recently taken an interest in white tea, which is from the same plant as green and black tea but only the new buds are taken. This means that the tea contains more polyphenols and antioxidants etc. I began to wonder just how much more antioxidants white tea contians compared to its other counterparts. After looking it up on the internet I became rather confused, no-one seems to have the same answer; some say only a tiny margin more (although never usually by the same amount), the majority of sources say it has 3x the antioxidants than green tea (which is considerably more potent than black tea itself), and a few say that it has the same amount! i'm more i…

From Scientific American Sept 2004 SA Perspectives : "Were Einstein alive today, he would undoubtedly still find causes for outrage" about Jews not living peaceably with Arabs and about USA foray into Iraq. This statement by The Editors of SA is a glaring example of antiscientism: (1) It is based on were/if,(2) plus an injection of the Editors' (royal s?) attitudes into Einstein's personality, (3) plus obvious ignorance of the nature of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict,(4) plus a more than just ignorant referral to Jews in lieu of Israelis. However, this is also a demonstration of The Editors' excellent editorial expertise, of how to package so many booboo…

We may anticipate a resumption of manned lunar exploration within the next five or six years. (See, for example, here.) I am curious about the likely response from those who deny that the Apollo landings ever occurred. Given that the deniers seem to be made up of a mix of trolls, the poorly educated, the gullible and the bloody-minded, I would expect a range of reactions. The poll gives you an opportunity to indicate what you think will be the most common response. Please post the reason(s) for your choice and add any related thoughts. Since this is about the psycholgical response to an engineering approach to pursuing scientific(astronomy & geology), political a…

I hope it isn't a foolish question. What is the farthest down that archaeologists have gone and still found evidence of a civilization? When I read of one site over an older site and sometime a third site beneath that, I wonder. Thank you.

Dear Scienceforums Community, In this article by Beth Blaxland and Fran Dorey (2018) changes in brain size amongst different human species were measured and compared in cubic centimeters (cc). Australopithecus afarensis: 450 cc Homo habilis: 610 cc Homo ergaster: 860 cc Homo heidelbergensis: 1250 cc Homo sapiens: 1350 cc This makes total sense to me. Yet I chanced apon this article via a link at the end of another article also by Fran Dorey from two years after the first one. Which stated that ,,Homo sapiens living today have an average brain size of about 1350 cubic centimetres which makes-up 2.2% of our body weight. Early …

While i was working on a model of space I came up with a new(maybe) Idea that, If Black holes are our Universe.. Let me Explain. Lets think of our universe as somewhere inside a Black hole. our "Big Bang" was an explosion of a huge star(which ended up as the black hole i am talking about). The Black hole keeps on Engulfing stuff getting bigger adding more stuff to our universe.. which might also be the cause of the expansion of our universe.. while i am working on this .. Can this idea be turned into a theory... Also if this could be considered we might change the way we think of origin of Universe as there is already a bigger Universe outside our's ... A parallel unive…

The system of notes is based on the fact that a certain frequency is taken, and in the next octave the same frequency, a multiple of two, is considered the same note. However, if we took a different multiplication, the notes would be in different frequencies. This means that objectively the notes are just a convention. Why, then, is it claimed that notes can be heard and distinguished from birth?
