Wondering if I have a learning disability: Every time I repeat something, I have to study it as if it were new. For example, say I'm taking an advanced level biology course. The course usually starts with a very brief introduction of biology foundations previously studied in earlier courses. Nonetheless, I will still study with the same attention and detail as if I were learning the foundational material for the first time. Or, say I am going to repeat a protocol for an experiment, I still follow the protocol from beginning to end regardless of the fact that I've repeated the protocol at least a dozen times within, say, a few months. I also find that I'm very pr…

I'm applying for USA PhD programs next fall. However, I can't decide which field I'd like to specialize in. Would anyone happen to know which field would meet the following criteria?-- 1. I'm interested in the mind. I find human beings, most notably their brains, the most fascinating. I am not interested in pursuing just psychology, and I admit I'm turned off to the field due to the replication crisis, and because I'd at least want to know the biological and chemical underpinnings behind the observed behavior. 2. I need a job that can get me going in the industry, since I need to make money, preferably in a 6-figure salary range so I can buy a reasonable house in…

Today I retrieved from a drawer this drawing instrument, called "stencil" or Schablon in German, that we used when drawing by hand (we stopped about twenty years ago). Looking at it, I noticed this strange angle 41,25 degrees. Combined with the other one 7,10 degrees. And I really could not recall why? What is so special with those 2 angles? Internet came to the rescue and I found it, but just by curiosity, can you figure out what is so special with those 2 angles?

Hi, I'm trying to wire a circuit that will use the high voltage lead from an old crt to power an electromagnet. I'm getting no reaction from my coil...lots of juice, no magnetic field. Is it an AC thing? I thought the hp leads on crts were dc. Just in case I took a high voltage diode from a microwave and fit it in, but it made no difference. What are my options? Many thanks for your replies. Ernie

Hi, Say if I want to "Start a Project" on url deleted what steps should I take to help me figure out a scientific project to do? I am worried about choosing a redundant project. Is there a way to avoid choosing a redundant project? Thanks for everyone's comments!

Hey, For three years now I've been working on a website that teaches physics: PhysicsIsBeautiful.com. We take a much more "gamified" approach to teaching physics, and it's targeted at people who are just starting to learn physics. Currently we have content ranging from unit conversion, to vectors, graphs, motion diagrams, and more. We just released the unit conversion lessons and would love feedback about what can be improved. We think the tools we've built so far have a different feel than most other physics education tools on the internet. Please try it out and let me know what you think! We want to start finding real physics teachers to partner with. …

Hey everyone I have passed 12th and I am searching for exams like Olympiad that I can give so that when I reach out for a college I can fill it out in the resume. I haven't given olympiads and any other competitive exams due to my negligence... But I dont wish to suffer in the future by my poor decisions. Exams that could help me boost my impression while applying for a college will be of great help. PS- I am scoping for colleges like Stanford (I'm from India though). I know about SAT and ACT I will be doing Bsc in physics... specifically theoretical/ astrophysics from India but MSc from foreign college. Your help will be much obliged. Tha…

Hi everyone, I am applying to neuroscience/neurobiology PhD programs that would start Fall '12, and I am looking for some guidance/comments/tips/assurance. I generally have competitive spec's for an applicant, but I am missing a lot of relevant coursework; I would like to know how realistic my goals are. The type of research I am interested in is more towards the genes/molecules/cells end of neuroscience and definitely not anywhere near the psychology end of neuroscience. The problem is that I don't have much science coursework under my belt, which may limit my goals. I am enrolled in some science classes to start catching up, but I am afraid it might be too littl…

Hey, I'm majoring in microbio and I want to pursue a PhD/MD. Does it matter what type of research I do as an undergrad? I am trying to get into a microbio lab but the spots are limited, but there are some spots open in some biomedical labs. Would it look weird if I got a position there?

Hello, I know, that I have asked you guys before a question regarding my carrer and you haven't heard from me since, but I just had to evaluate all my options, but I really appreciated your opinion and I chose a few prospects based on your opinion, that I will just have to try myself in in order to determine whether I fit this field or not. Anyway, I'm coming with more direct question now as I'm struggling with writing my first own work, that has to be ~40 A4 pages. So far I got 34 pages and I just need some info on the last chapter as I can't seem to find it anywhere. I'm interested in cellular response in plants, particularly: transcription-independent cell…

Hi all, This is my first ever topic. Please let me know if i'm doing something wrong. So... I've been looking around for a trusted webshop where I can buy science equipment for a school. I Googled a bit and came across a danish webshop: https://shop.skolebutik.dk (and yes, my school is in Denmark). They sell all kind of school equipment for teaching and I was wondering if any of you can recommend other webshops which sells the same equipment. Currently we are in need of test tubes for chemistry class. Let me know if any of you know any other webshops. Thank you in advance!

Hello, I'm quite new to this forum, I am currently a student in a radiography program and for fun I was wanting to try to make some x-ray attenuation materials to x-ray in our lab. I purchased a few metal oxides, Bi2O3 and Sb2O3 which they currently use to make protection vest out of, when mixing these powders together in an epoxy I noticed I couldn't get a very even mixture unless I mixed the two compounds together in water first making them hydroxides and then dehydrated the mixture, when doing so i also noticed the loading capacity increased compared to that our adding the two compounds directly to the epoxy. My question would be why would adding water to the…

Hi there, I got suddenly very interested in this topic after a dream I had where a sun imploded on itself so I started to wonder. If the sun imploded, would we have enough time to find shelter before the temperature froze us to death? Would it be 8 minutes as that is the time it takes the light of the sun to reach us or would we just die instantaneously? I am not in need for any desperate answers but an answer would be appreciated. And another thing would the radiation of the sun imploding immediately kill us? Thanks, Andrew

Hello people, this is my first topic so forgive me if I commit any mistake, cleared up that, I want to know what books, preferably of course with exercises, do you recommend to me to as the title says, learn match, physic and algebra from scratch. I like to be autodidact so I will learn and practice solo, but that doesn't mean that I don't will gonna aks for help. I'm actully studying systems engineering, and my knowledge in math arrives until to operate and derivate with functions, in physic until to UVRM (Uniformly Varied Rectilinear Motion), and in algebra until to vectors. But although I have certain know in the subjects, I want to learn them from scratch with bo…

Hi, I'm going to complete my A-levels next year and I haven't decided on what major I want to take. I'm certain I want to major in biology or life science but I'm torn between choices. I do not have a passion for medicine however -- I have neither the interest nor the stomach for it. What interests me the most is researching, especially if the field is hands-on. I've narrowed it down to two -- Zoology and Bioengineering -- but I need help in deciding as I would be stuck with my choice for the rest of my life. I've listed down what I think of them and why I would like to study them. I could use more insight. Zoology: I'm an outdoor enthusiast. …

I've mentioned my admission to MS Nuclear Engineering in the University of Florida earlier. Thing is I am a foreigner. What with all the security most countries have surrounding nuclear technology, would I be limiting myself in the number of parties I can work with? I am aware I have other career options but I am asking strictly about options in engineering. I did speak of taking instrumentation and control specialization possibly earlier which from the general definition of it would seem to open up more fields than nuclear. But then again, my degree would say I did an MS in Nuclear Engineering and not something like mechanical or electrical.
