We're all familiar with how certain concepts in science are difficult to grasp, or perhaps to remember. Mottos are these pieces of wisdom that try to capture an idea and make it easier to grasp yourself, or to get across to others through an intuitive verbal formulation. Some of them can be quite unfortunate. They shall not be mentioned here, if possible. So my suggestion is: Let's all share those brief phrasings that have helped us remember an idea, understand it better, keep it closer to our hearts and brains. They can be our own creation or found elsewhere and treasured ever since. One example could be (these are my own): "Velocity is the par…

I'm about to become an RSO here in the UK. I dropped out midway through university and want to go back to study Biochemistry/Biomedicine. The plan is to work my ass off, get my degree, and then get my master's after that. Will I struggle to find work if I am an RSO? Do you find that scientific jobs do background checks? I really want to pursue a career in science and I hate myself for possibly messing it up. My conviction means my charge is never spent. Thanks

Whilst sourcing some components I came across this excellent downloadable pdf on constructing electonics circuits. This would be ideal for teachers of physics/electronics/instrumentation to use. https://www.mitchelectronics.co.uk/electronicsConstructionManual.pdf

Hi I made a blog post on creating models using molymods and just wondered if these kits were still widely used in education. I posted a video on peertube and the reply I got suggested people could use Molview.(http://molview.org/) instead. So asking. I have suggested that if people can't get hold of molymod kits (say cost barrier) it is possible to use coloured clay and straws for very basic models. (not ideal but better than nothing) but that is more of a side issue. For me physically building is a good thing, plus there are videos on you tube showing you how to simulate basic reactions and ensuring you maintain equilibrium which is something I don't th…

With the exceptions of occasional crackpots, the selfish, the unkind, and the uncouth; and on rare occasions, the sheer lunatics that come and go, most of the members of this community are giving me an enormously valuable environment to exchange ideas. Teaching has been a great pleasure for me for many years. Now, for the first time, I'm tutoring a boy that suffers from Asperger's syndrome. After a month now, I must say that it's been one of the most gratifying teaching experiences I've had so far. Things are going pretty well, good results keep coming, and everyone involved seems to be happy. We've started with maths. Every time he shouts “now I understand it!” is pr…

I installed a booster pump to my reverse osmosis system. And I realized there are water around the pump. I thought it was leaking, so I checked all the pipe. It was not leaking. And I realize there are a lot of condensation only when the pump is working. There are so much condensation that water starts collecting at the bottom around the pump. Since cold water coming in when pump, condensation is normal, but it really is excessive. So my question is would vibration from the pump enhance condensation? Would fixing the pump with screws help? I need to wipe it daily. That is annoying and I really need to find a solution.

Hello all, I've been trying to figure this question out for a week now, but can't seem to be reaching a logical answer. I'd very much appreciate if anyone could help me see how this prolem should be solved. Here it goes: Consider the following wild-type amino acid sequence in bacteria: N-Ser-Leu-Ile-Leu-Ser-C A researcher has induced various mutations in the bacteria, and has isolated two species containing a mutant amino acid sequence. Sequence #2: N-Tyr-Leu-Met-Leu-Ser-C Sequence #3: N-Cys-Leu-Ile-Phe-Lys-X-C 1. State the Sense-DNA sequence for each of the above amino-acid sequences. 2. What Amino Acid could be "X" in sequence #3? Sta…

May I start by saying this is not a college course. In GB now we are expected to carryout about 3 hrs per year CPD training with regards to our jobs, its a government requirement. I see the benefits of it as our vehicles are all fast becoming high voltage electric vehicles which are or can be very dangerous in the wrong hands. I am a qualified auto-electrician by trade and been in the job some 30 years, but not as a specialist as I carryout other areas of work routinely. So I'm doing some research and I have been refreshing my understanding of determining resistances in parallel circuits. I like knowing I can work mathematics out on paper rather than using a ca…

Can a pathology(I dont know if this is the correct term) kill an invading virus? I've been thinking about that amid this corona virus hysteria. My mother has miastenia gravis, a very rare disease, to make it brief, antibodies attack the host and external agents, instead of attacking only external agents, I've been thinking if there is a possibility of surviving the covid 19 thanks to the aggressive behavior of the immune system, killing every symptom or at least most? I am asking because the question appeared yesterday in my head but I found nothing in google about diseases killing other external agents. My mother rarely get a fever or any common flu, even with miastenia …

At the risk if triggering a discussion that may not belong anywhere on SCIENCEFORUMS.NET I’m hoping to understand the anti-science direction taken by so many conservative political groups over the last several decades. At times I feel it’s as if The Enlightenment never happened. My post was triggered by an article today in The Melbourne Age newspaper describing an organised, well financed program to promulgate within primary and secondary schools in Australia the idea climate change/global warming is no more than an alarmist falsehood. The ostensible justification given is children shouldn’t be scared out of their minds by false prophecies. It will be interesting when thi…

Will finish B.S. in molecular biology in May. Have found asking vague questions about where to go/apply to next are pretty unhelpful. I believe that going through indexes of interesting research is the closest I can get to finding a place to advance myself and be happy in. here is an example for UW-Madison, https://discoveryportal.org/default.aspx Would you have any suggestions about approaches/resources similar to this one?

Feel a little silly writing this, but wanted opinions from an outside source Have been considering studying but am unsure whether I'm actually smart enough to follow the topics I'm interested in. In my mid-twenties and never thought I would study. I did well in school until about 10th grade when I had to get a job to support my siblings. After that, school was downhill. I completed grade 12 but my OP wasn't great. I did well on the exams but failed several classes due to unfinished assignments. Grades came second to feeding us and I stopped caring. I've always had an interest in insects and reptiles, they absolutely fascinate me and I would love to study either…

Hi everyone ! I started research at university this year in the field of chemistry, and especially organic chemistry. I'm fluent in english (french is my main language) and I have no problem to communicate my results and problems with the staff. However, writing papers is another thing and I noticed a lack of skills for building nice-looking but efficient sentences. Do you have any resource for self-learning and improving the writing skills for the scientific field (no need to learn how to write poems) ? Thanks a lot and have a good day !

Hi, I'm probably going to sound like an idiot asking this, hopefully it isn't too generalised as a question. I also hope I'm posting this in the right section of the forum-what sort of mathematical skills and disciplines are commonly used in entomological fields? I'm just asking as I'm very interested in hopefully having a career in the future in something to do with entomology. I'm also asking as I don't currently have the best math skills, but I am studying at the moment and hope to get better with maths as I progress with said studies. Anyway, thanks for looking, just thought I'd ask out of curiosity.

Now, I'm not sure if anyone has tried to compile such a list, but I'd like to suggest a joint effort to compile a collection of several books, resources, websites and the like, that allow you to learn about all sorts of things. I think I'm not alone here when I say I want to learn a MILLION things, but I don't want to get 30 different degrees. I want to study, and research and learn and experiment, but without having to pay thousands of dollars in tuition. I'm looking for things like khanacademy or Udemy. Youtube channels like Crash Course. Good books like the ones they usually have us buy for college. A compilation made by learners, for learners.…

My 11 year old is taking college precalculus this semester and will likely take Calculus I next semester. She is mostly interested in Cosmology as a career and I want to find a summer program that will encourage that interest in the topic; entertainment is more important than challenging her intellect. She is already pushing herself hard enough during the school year, so I want her to see the summer camp as a reward for working hard this year, but I also want her to see the possibilities of a future in science. Most of the science camps for kids her age are below her level so she is just bored. I'm wondering if anyone on here has found a really high class summer camp …
