Hi everyone.! This is my first time on this site I would like to tell what I really like this project "Education" I've been reading it for a while, and I have learned so much here So, I decided to try my luck asking a few questions... How can you IM, PM or whatever you call it to certain members? I'd like to ask more questions about this project. By the way, nice domain name http://www.scienceforums.net

Hi everybody. I think my participation in this forum has dropped dramatically since joining university, as I have only posted once since, but I have an important decision to make soon, so I would be grateful for any help in answering the specific questions I am about to ask. I am currently studying Chemical Engineering at University right now, but I am seriously considering switching to Theoretical Physics. Frankly I am unsure about what I should do and am having a dilemma over this. There are various reasons why I feel I should switch to Physics, and other reasons why I feel sticking with chemeng may be the wiser option. I am not asking you to make a decision for me, …

Greetings! Posting here because for most of You it should be easier to understand, already having realized the futility of self-pride and indignation, than it is to openly express. The post being relatively anonymous, Please take it as self-praise less likely! Regardless of perceived plausibility, one can respond assuming a statement to be true. Recently stumbled on this Wikipedia page( additional characteristics more important ) and realized that, like most of You here, I've always had similar characteristics. Instead of receiving adequate attention, I was beaten and reviled daily at school for ~7 years because of not being physically aggressive m…

If this is true, there will be laptops and treadmills all around the schools instead of desks and you just sitting there. If this will happen, will anyone tell me when, why, and how it will occur.

I love learning but I cannot remember the whole book. I take what I can understand and apply it to my own personal understanding making it my philosophy. So I have changed the original thought to my thought. Is this learning approach correct morally, existentially, what? pljames

I am currently doing a postgraduate degree in teaching. I am finding myself almost constantly disagreeing with our 'teaching experts' (mainly because they don't seem to understand what science is) so I am interested in other people's opinions. So, what makes a good teacher? In particular, how should one go about teaching undergraduate physics? (inc. lectures, tutorials, labs, online learning, or just any great innovative ideas.) For example, in last year's lectures I tried usual a 'public response system'. I gave all the students electronic handsets at the start of the lecture and occasionally I would ask them a multiple choice question (usually a fairly easy …

I just thought I'd throw this out there: how many people agree with my proposition that a sufficiently grounded education in biology *requires* a knowledge of paleontology, at least to the level of what evolved from what? To me, it simply seems obvious; teaching biology without paleontology is like teaching politics without any mention of events that happened before 1998. Like high-level evolution courses, it should be *required* for all biology students. Mokele

I always want to improve my writing and I'm still inept at writing a good essay. I want to change the type of sentence, probably by the structure in a more humorous way. Is there any forum comprising a lot of helpers willing to rewrite a sentence or a paragraph for me if there's a request? Thank you

Hi I am thinking about studying for the MCATs starting January. I have been researching books to study for the MCATs and reading reviews. While doing my research I came across The Gold Standard MCAT Home Study Package. The link to the package is given below. http://www.mcat-bookstore.com/images/new_new_composite_w1.jpg Does this book cover enough information for a student who forgot most of the he learned in science class in college? Those of you who bought this package, what did you think? Do you recommend it? What other books do you recommend and why?

Hey, what's up, I have a question... I'm wondering, how can you spend your scholarship money? Is it like free money that you can spend on clothing, or whatever? And if you got the scholarship for a post-education, I don't see how the scholarships can help you if courses or taking years at uni or college cost like 50,000$ and scholarships give you like 500$, or 1,000$? What are scholarships for? What's so special about them? Sorry, I'm new at this sh!t

Just reviewing my choices for AS's next year, well month, but you know what I mean. Was thinking of taking chemistry, physics, computing, and another one, maybe maths. I dont really have an interest in maths (I know I should do!), but figured it may have its use for a level phys and chem, and science at the degree level. Can anyone provide some support for this? Also, I would be greatful for some recomendations of reading material for the physics and chemistry a-levels. I know the basics of the sylebuses, but always like to be ahead! Thanks!

out of curiosity does anybody here go to rutgers and or know anyone who does or is affiliated with it? I ask beause I think I'm going to transfer there in the spring and want to know if there is an oppinion on it. I was going to sit the year out in community college but after getting a look at the course catalogue and seeing my GED scores (which turned out to be very high) I think I may be able to transfer.

i'm very interested in topics such as particle physics, quantum physics, dimensional physics, string theory etc. i am also interestd in engineering should i get an undergrad degree in engineering (EECS most likely) and then specialize in grad school? or do an applied physics/physics major in undergrad? what job oppurtunities are there if i don't go the engineering route (other than academia)? i think there are advantages doing engineering then specializing in the above stated branches of physics: you still get a physics background...you can do scientific instrument development, and computer science skills which are very important today, also more job oppurtunities…

This was moved from another thread, 'Do you have a new theory', but seems more appropriate here, please see below... It's funny you mention this, I'm approaching the end of my course and the last block concentrates on cosmology and universal processes, so there's a lot of focus on particle physics as well. The book was printed in 1998, and I've come across quite a few examples that to me, seem rather outdated, and not the accepted view. Although it's obviously not the fault of the university that techniques change, and new data is found on a daily basis, it's quite odd being taught a subject where I'm having to correct what I'm being taught. Most of my pre-knowle…

OK, I'm in the process of reviewing potential Grad study options and I came across various "rotation PhD" programs. For those who haven't heard of this, the first year is spent in various different labs learning different techniques and meeting different profs. Then after the first year, you decide which prof you want to work with and you write up a proposal. So question: Has anyone done a rotation PhD here, or do you know of people who have done this? If so, did you/they like it? Do you/they recommend this type of program? Has anyone heard of rotation PhD programs for Eco/Evo majors? And finally, does anyone know much about the John Innes Centre in Norwich,…

I'm currently a second year engineering student enrolled in Queen's University, Canada. Second year here at Queen's is common for all mechanical engineering students; however in third year we get to chose between a general mechanical engineering option or a materials option. I'm really interested in aerospace engineering which falls under the general option, however recently I heard that nanotechnology is a very interesting field that is rapidly developing. So, my question is.... is it at all possible for me to work in a nanotechnology related field if I graduate from the materials option? If not, then how's it like to work as a materials engineer? Is it mainly re…

Here's what I'm taking: - Introduction to Philosophy - Introduction to World Religions - Introduction to Social Psychology - 2nd year English (ENG-103) - Beginning Spanish Total Credits/Hours = 16 Typical FT load is 15 credits. My Comments: I really don't want to take Spanish; I like learning Japanese more than Spanish. With the probability of the national language law being passed, I don't know if taking Spanish is really worth anything these days. I rather take Japanese, but my institution does not offer it. Just one more of the reasons I dislike two-year colleges. I thought about transferring since I have a high G.P.A. and have a few courses on my …

Well, I suppose I should start by introducing myself. I'm Aggy and I'm due to start A2 Level Biology, Chemistry, and either/or both, Physics and Psychology. I'm having a lot of trouble deciding on a degree for myself. I originally did not want to take a Biology AS, I wanted to take Maths, but it clashed with my timetable so I took Bio. I had a good experience and I got an A in the first module exam. AS Chemy was interesting, but difficult. AS Physics, I loved, but I'm not sure if its because of the content or because of...erm...other things (or shall I say people )- it sounds stupid I know. AS Psychology, I just had to take. I always thought I would love it, a…

To those of you who already have a career in science: why did you choose your particular field? I'm having difficulty deciding on a major. The two things that interest me the most are probably the emergence of self-replicators (or the origin of life), and the nature of matter, which I suppose would fall under theoretical physics. The latter seems like it would be difficult to make much progress in, considering that projects like the Superconducting Supercollider are so expensive. Any suggestions?

hi every1~! I was just curious that why everyone dies to get accepted into an ivy uni. Is it that unis have a big name which they can use to show off, and/or feel superior than others? Based on my experience, the only thing is the big name they have in most of the cases. I know a lot of people in my school who're taking ap classes just because to show off their transcript to teh college admission officers. What are your thoughts about it?
